I just paid $4.02 for a Starbucks, and it tasted awesome!
I am also a liar. It tasted just the same, except this time my wallet hurt. For the first time in a long while, i actually paid for it with my own dollars today! Imagine that ;) It sounds silly, but it really sucked. As many of you know, our company is pretty bad a$$ and pays for our addictions through a refillable Starbucks gift card that we can all use FOR FREE! (to help boost productivity and company morale...and it works!)
So every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we all get our specialty drinks on the company's dime. Not a bad perk, right?!
Well today's card was out of dollars, and so it was either wait for it be filled up, or continue along with our daily routine....i chose the latter, and am now $4 bucks lighter. And the suckiest part? Those f'ers didn't hook me up with those sexy discounts like they usually do!!! Sure i used a credit card instead of a gift card to pay, but still - they know me pretty freakin' well over there...but i digress.
All I can tell you is that shelling out my own hard earned money REALLY gets you to stop and think about a few things. Like the first being, Damn we're f'ing lucky! How on earth did we, or I should really say I, convince our CEO to allow this? All i know is, time to stop complaining about things like bounced pay checks...unless it becomes a habit ;) Paying for this addiction myself gives me a better appreciation of this perk.
And secondly, Damn Starbucks is expensive! haha...I could have sworn i used to pay like $2 bucks for it back in the day. Although, i have started getting a latte instead of just straight coffee w/ hazelnut syrup in it. $4 bucks though??? W-O-W, they are good.
So yeah, today's experience was a pretty good eye opener of a place where I could easily blow a good $100/month without even realizing it. Now if only i could convince my boss to start treating for lunch every day ;) Holler.
(For more info on the discounts and savings over at Starbucks, check out my declared love for them)

That's only one store - I think a lot of people don't realize how quickly a couple bucks here and a couple bucks there can add up. Imagine finding $25 per week in your current spending that you can get back that's $1300 a year. Not a bad vacation fund.
We used to get free sodas and bottled water at work, and then when the economy turned, they took them away as part of some drastic cost-cutting measures :( I hope you get to keep your Starbuck perk for a long, long time!
Stinkin' Starbucks is so good!
I used to live in Seattle and the guys at work would only bring in Starbucks coffee for the coffee pot, refused to drink anything else! They are hardcore out there though... I hate black coffee so I ususally put hot chocolate mix in it and got SOOOOOO much flack for it. "You need an umbrella to go with your girly coffee?"!!
I'll stick to my Folgers and hot chocolate from now on, not a $4 non-fat, soy, coffee, caramel, platinum, diamond machiatto.
Ha! It really is an eye opener when you have to pay for it yourself, isn't it? The company I work for provides so many snacks and a fully stocked refrigerator and cupboards, that we can basically eat breakfast and lunch for nothing! It's great! And they order pizza and sandwiches a couple of times a week. Our crew will only drink Starbucks too, so I stop in on my way to work and buy the fresh ground coffee, and I benefit with my free tall drink. This usually happens at least 3 times a week. Man these guys drink a lot of coffee around here, but no way am I complaining. ;)
Sometimes, you've gotta treat yourself...
Yeah, i left out some other perks like our fully stocked fridge and stuff too, but one of these days i'll post them all so that whenever i bitch and moan about something, i can just pull the post up and remind myself to be grateful ;)
That last thing i wanna do is say (or do) something retarded and end up on the streets looking for another job in this economy...
And when those diamond machiattos come out, you KNOW i'll be all over those bad boys! I can taste that sweet aroma now... mmmmmmm
That is an *awesome* perk. Man I miss having a job. School only gives me cold pizza once a month ;).
I don't get it. I find Starbucks coffee is vile. It's like drinking turpentine mixed with water. It's overpriced, they're driving better local cafes out of business and they generally don't use fair trade products. I cheer every time one of their stores goes bust and shuts.
Yes, perks are good. It is also good to find out once in a while what these perks are worth. Hey, maybe your company lets the card expire deliberately now and then to send you that message.
Instead of spending money on good coffee, I like to spend it on wine. But my wife gave me a high dollar limit per bottle. I agree with her. I don't even enjoy the wine if I know it was very expensive. Spending too much money on some consumption items takes away the pleasure of consuming it for me. How does that work for you guys?
J,
I know people, and they know people, who know a few more people, so when the diamond encrusted, platinum machiatto lattes come out, I'll hook you up.
Justhipper I hear ya man, i used to hate the cofee but learned that covering it with syrup makes it all better ;) Totally overpriced, and sucky for small biz, but i'm just not hardcore enough to walk the extra 4 blocks every morning to help 'em out. I'm a sucker for fast, easy, and trendy...esp. when i normally don't have to pay the bills! (i know, i'm a bad person sometimes. it's okay if you hate me.)
Vilkri I'd take wine over cofee any day, but only at night! while i could probably get away w/ it here at work in our lax environment, i need to be perky and full of energy instead of silly/flirty/horny/half drunk ;)
As for a "message" our co. could be sending, fortunately i've ruled that one out. We pay everything on credit card here, and when the fraud dept thinks something is awry, they freeze it and we all have to wait for it to clear up before using it again - and unfort. it affects our Bucks run.
TomFor wathever reason, i believe if it can be done, you'd be the one to make that happen! Put in a good word for me so that I can start picking up the J. Money Lattes too...i heard those are all the rage these days ;)
That is some company perk!
