Verizon Wireless will soon go without Early Termination Fees!
"Verizon has announced that they will begin offering monthly cellphone plans with no early termination fees. Consumers wishing to take advantage of the plans will be required to pay full price for a phone, or provide their own phone, as Verizon will not be subsidizing the cost of handsets."If you already have a plan, like i do, you'll have to wait until your current contract expires, but then it's home saling we come! The fact that the plan rates are the same is even better. On the other hand, if you don't feel comfortable picking up a phone from Ebay/Craigslist/or some other place, you might be just have to stick with the normal way of getting a phone. But at least we now have options!

I always thought that if you let your 2 year plan run out you automatically were put on a month to month basis. However, they always try to get you with the new phone discounts!
There is a catch though. I've worked for verizon for 2 years and I know how much they charge even the cheapest looking cellphone for without discount. The chapest phone is $150-200 no camera nothing. So at the end it is a good marketing strategy but it will not benefit consumer cost wise.
yeah, you're actually right asgreen in that once your contract ends, you go month to month (and then they try to woo you back into a plan!)
But for new customers, this is awesome! i SO hope others go down this route, esp. T-Mobile so i can finally get the Sidekick without worrying about contract stuff!
And chicky, yeah a lot of phones are pretty expensive, but you can find some great deals from wholesalers online, esp. ebay. I used to buy a handful of phones for an older company i worked at, and it was sweet. Guess it all depends on what you need/want in a phone.
Wow that is a pretty big development. I am with Tmobile since I still rock my Sidekick 2. My contract expired in 2006 and I still rock out to TMobile but just on a month to month basis. I am waiting to get this new Google Phone in the winter. Wowie!
You know, I have T-mobile.. we actually switched from Verizon. T-mobile paid off our early termination fees of $275 per line from Verizon.
Hey J. Money:
How funny that you post about this, I've been obsessed with ditching my cell phone plan and going month to month because I can't justify spending 50 bucks a month for about 12 minutes worth of calls! Problem is I have another 8 months on my contract ... ever bail out of one and if so did you lose a lot of $$?
always in style - nope, never bailed precisely to avoid those fees, but i've def. wanted to! Word on the street though, is that a lot of the carriers are now pro-rating the termination fees...so instead of paying the full $250, let's say, you might just have to pay like $100. Still not fun though.
You should call your carrier and just straight up ask them, and if you find it's worth it, then switch on out of there!
I'm actually wondering how on earth mommy2serenity got her new one to pay off the old! that's quite impressive.
