I'll admit, when it comes to work - i can get pretty jaded.
I LOVE my job, don't get me wrong, but every now and then i have to sit down and remember all of the reasons WHY i work where i do.And these days, it's more the "now" part, than the "then" ;) After a while we all start forgetting the perks of the office, and start focusing on the annoyances here and there. But the second you're out of a job, allllllll those niceties you took for granted start flooding your brain!
So, today, i'm going to list every single positive thing i can think of @ my company. Some of the stuff might come out as bragging - but i swear to you it's not the reason for all this. The point of it all is to keep me grounded and have a list that i can reflect upon the second i think of spouting my "F You's" to everyone circa Half Baked! haha....remember that? "F you, F you, you're cool, and fuck you, I'm out!" That's brilliant.
Of course, no one in their right mind would ever go down such a path, but this list will certainly make sure of that :) So here it is - All of the things (in no particular order) that get me up in the morning and excited for work:
- The paycheck: $75,000. a HUGE incentive.
- The bonuses: $2,000 per quarter (although currently frozen)
- The dresscode: Dress as you wish, as long as it's not offensive. Some wear business casual, while others (cough cough..me) show up in jeans and a t-shirt every day...w/ a little bling hear and there.
- The atmosphere: A bit like google in that we work hard, and play even harder!
- The coffee: Free unlimited starbucks on the house.
- The fridge: Always stocked with drinks, yogurts, snacks, and BEER! mmm.....
- The 401k: 100% matching, up to the legal amount. So if you put in say $10k this year, our company will match that $10k this year - fully vested! This is one of my all-time favorite perks.
- The work itself: Absolutely fantastic. My position fluctuates depending on the projects at hand, but i'd say it's broken down into 3 specific areas: Managing customer service, Projects, and Graphic Design. All of which i enjoy doing 100%....even, and especially, the customer service part. it seems insane, but being an advocate for the consumer is very rewarding!
- The people: Fairly young - half in their twenties, and the other half in their thirties.
- The health insurance: Excellent, as far as i've used it! (we'll see what happens after the gallbladder fiasco though) 100% fully covered by our company for now. It'll probably raise this next year, but nothing too substantial.
- The communication: Everyone's doors are open for talks - literally, we all keep them open :) that's not to say that ideas, advice, etc will be accepted all the time, but at least you're heard no matter your rank.
- The downtime: Changes on a day to day basis, but let's just say there's enough time to check your email, facebook, myspace, blogs, etc.
I have to say, i'm feeling better already! I'm telling you, writing all of this stuff down REALLY gets your mind right, you should really try it. Start by leaving a comment with your own favorite perk or two on here :) It'll be one happy a$$ list of good stuff to read. Gotta love that!

That's a great idea! I occasionally get down on my job - like you said, even if we have great places to work we forget about the benefits sometimes. Next time this happens to me isting the perks would be a good exercise.
The girls and I were just bitching about our job so watch out for the list on my blog...Very best perk in my office is that there is NO micro-managing and I work from home 2 days a week.
So to make you happy, you get us all depressed that our companies don't do all the for us... Thanks... now I have to survive my day sans all the perks you get, and just wishing!
Great exercise! I really love my job, but like any long term relationship it has its ups and downs. hehe.
ps - Glad to hear Mrs is recovering well!
That's it, just ONE of you have a good perk going on? I don't believe it....you KNOW you've got some good loving from your company somewhere ;)
@Dawn - yeah for sure, go for it! i LOVE hearing about perks everyone else has, so def. holler if you've got a good one :)
@Rebecca - hell f'ing yeah girl, that is hot! i'll def. wait for that posting.
@Philip - haha, oops. you're telling me there's not ONE perk you have going for you over there? HAH i don't believe it. whatcha got for me mr.?
@Dollar incense - thx for the well wishes, she's def. hanging in there :) love to hear some of the UPS at your place!
Sigh. Your company sounds like a dream.
Thanks for keeping me motivated to find a new job!
Well.... since there's not nearly as much positivity on here as I was hoping to find.... I'll stop lurking and post. :)
I work as an RN in a small community hospital, which inherently comes with its own set of non-perks. However,
~ Everyone knows Everyone- which means no bitchiness can really be gotten away with and you can say Hi to at least 1 person from each unit! (and I feel like a person rather than a number.... most of the time, anyways)
~ On Night shift (which is 7p-7a for me) we are given free food. Yes, its leftovers from the cafeteria, but its generally pretty yummy!
~ I can make my own schedule on the computer, and I usually get the days I want. Trust me, thats a PERK for Nursing.
~ I can think of only ONE coworker in the entire place that I can't stand. I consider it a PERK for sure to like most of the people I work with. :)
~ Since I work 12 hour shifts, I only work 3 nights a week. P-E-R-K.
Thanks for a great post- I lurk on your blog pretty regularly for the fantastic laughs I get from your sense of humor! Oh, and the finance advice is great too! :)
yayyy!!! i have SO MUCH respect for Nurses! seriously, after being in the hospital for 4 days straight i saw some hardcore REAL working out there - you guys actually HELP people, sooooo cool :) although i must say some nurses are WAY better (and nicer) than others, so it looks like your place rocks!
perhaps one day i can pick your brain? i'm adding that field to my "jobs to look into" list.
I do the same thing to keep my motivated with my job although I don't have nearly as many perks as you do. The big perk of my job is that since I am a salaried employee, my hours are pretty flexible. Some days, I may work 10 hours, other days I may work 5. As long as you get the job done, they don't hassle you too much.
About the only two perks of my job is that I have one and that it motivates me to get my degree done. I hired on for making sandwhiches and running register 20 hours a week. Currently, my boss flat-out refuses to train me or let me train myself. I'm lucky to get 15 hours a week, and all I do is wash dishes. This is with four years food service experience and excellent references. Plus, I make minimum wage ($7.40/hr) with no prospects for a promotion or wage increase.
J Money, and others, you give me all the more incentive to get my degree! I can't wait to have a "real" career with a list of pros (and I understand, cons as well)!
beer?! your company fridge is stocked with beer?!?! OMG. i need your job. =P
I want your job! Some great perk's - espically the 401K and Coffee (beer sounds good as well). I wrote a post awhile back on 20 signs you are bored at work, but I think your list is much more constructive and beneficial. Work on!
You wanted to hear some Ups, so I blogged a few of them. :)
unjaded - the new thankful
Beer and 401k baby, that's where it's at ;)
@SingleGuymoney - that flexibility ain't too shabby! I'd take that anyday.
@ka1t_lyn - You'll get there soon, don't you worry :)
@Tiffanie - Someone just left today, so there's an opening!! haha...it's actually pretty scary, but i'm not thinking about it right now.
@Andy - haha, that sounds awesome. I'm gonna have to search for that one on your site - i bet it's more interesting to read!
@dollar incense - Awww yeahhhh now THAT is what i'm talking about girl!!! dude, that "Beer Pong" action sounds hot as hell...i might have to bring that up here ;)
Maybe it's just us start up people that get all the goodies? there's def. an interesting atmosphere when it comes to this kinda company. Thx for sharing, it made my day!
You are welcome to pick my brain anytime! I never thought I would be a nurse growing up, but it's a great career! Especially in my city, as we are the highest paid nurses in the country. Just one more perk for ya. :) And thanks for the props- its a hard job but I love it and I love my patients. Well, most of them anyways. ;)
you inspired me to post my own list! and i got a nice reminder this week of how awesome my work colleagues are. :)
