Pimping out your place for the Presidential Inauguration!
Here in DC, there are ads all over the place for this. Seriously, it's starting to get insane and it's still what, TWO months away? Some people are renting out their place for $2,000, $4,000, even $10,000! For 4-5 days! Daaaaaaaaaaaang son. There are over 450+ posts on craigslist yesterday alone for this.
This is one of those times i wished i still lived around here cuz i gotta say, i'd be all OVER that! I used to live right off of Wisconsin in upper Georgetown area (which is a pretty good location, esp for partying ;) and older/richer people....being safe and all), and although it was just a studio apartment, it would get the job done for a weekend or so! I'm thinking i could have probably rented it out for let's say, umm.....$1,000 for the weekend?
Although, it might get pretty sticky if you're actually renting it yourself ;) So would probably be best if you owned your place, but maybe it really wouldn't matter, i dunno i'm no expert. The point is, that's a LOOOOOT of money you can earn super quickly, and for basically nothing.
Here are all the pros and cons i could conjure up in a case like this:
The Pros of Being a House P.I.M.P.
For you: $1,000-$10,000 in cash! perhaps some new scenery for a bit?
For renter: their own cozy place! own living room, dining room (presumably), bedroom(s), a whole freakin' place. Plus, no more worrying about hotels all sold out and/or crazies keeping you up all night there.
The Cons of Being a House P.I.M.P.
For you: You'd have to find somewhere else to live for a bit (Hello, Mom?). You'd also be opening up your whole life to strangers! Think: stealing, trashing, etc.
For renter: Could be more expensive to rent out a house/condo than a hotel, esp. the closer the time gets to booking it. Possibly no access to gym/pool/concierge, etc.
This whole thing is pretty insane if you ask me, but that's the beauty of this country - we can do whatever we wish :) I'm gonna keep my eye on this and see how much higher these prices get as time goes on. I guarantee they just get crazier and crazier! Would you do it?
Labels: cockamamy indeed, fast cash, politics

You could just rent out your driveway. Parking, RV, tent?. lol. When the superbowl was here last year people were doing that.
I agree Ashley! People could tailgate in the driveway haha go USA! I'd be too paranoid about crazies I think to rent the crib. Although for $10,000 yep I'd do it. J$ Keep an eye on those prices, that should be interesting. This goes to show all the business-minded people in America, love it!
haha, i love it. i don't have a driveway where i live, but i could rent out my parking space? you could fit a camper in there ;) but then again, you could park it free at any of the 1,00000000,00 Walmarts too!
Hilarious! Hey, you can't fault the folks for trying, after all, the economy is a bit gloomy for many. I must admit, the concept has all the makings for good blog postings;-).
I lived for many years in Augusta, GA, home of the MASTERS golf tournament. Every April, people rented their houses for the tournament week, all kinds of houses (mansions to 2 bedrooms). It is a huge money maker. And, I'm not sure, but I've heard it is not taxable income. I would do it in a second!!
J, I've got an extra room. How about I let you stay here, for a cut of your profits? ;)
I would be too paranoid to leave all of my stuff here...but I would rent a spare bedroom or something (if I had one).
I pimp my place out all the time. This Thanksgiving I've got some folks from California staying for the 4-day weekend - it's my 10th time doing this in 3 years. And yes, I'm a renter and it's breaking my building's rules, but I keep everyone briefed on the cover story ("we're friends of her sister's" or "we're doing a home swap"). I posted a bunch of advice about it on my blog back in September:

I live in Denver, and during the DNC I thought about renting out my apartment (about 10 blocks from all the action), but decided against it. I remembered that I got my apartment off craigslist, my landlord said he used craigslist for all of his properties, and I checked my lease and it would have definitely violated it. If you own the place, DO IT. Find a place to stay? Ha! Just use the money to go travel. It's more than worth it!
@Ms MoneyChat - Sexactly ;)
@Jen Thorpe - Oooh, yeah no kidding! that's even better because it's a yearly thing too, not just a once-in-8-years thing..i say 8 in hopes Mr. O will be in longer :) he he....
@ParadigmShifted - Don't tempt me girl! I swear, after my findings last night, i'm *so close* to renting out our place up in Maryland and renting closer to the city...if you live in DuPont/Georgetown, i'l there :)
@Saving Diva - For sure, it would be kinda wierd having strangers in there.
@MoneyMate Kate - BAD A$$! You are so freakin' smart!!! I haven't read that post yet, but it's def. on my list today. Way to work it!
@Phillip Holland - Yeah, it's def. tricky - esp. if you go for it when you KNOW you're landlord is on CL anyways! I'd totally go on a trip instead...shoot, i'd ask for the $ to rent my place up front and then use that to go on the vacay while they're there! haha...
J - I live near U St... So perhaps I'll rent my place out and crash with you - split the proceeds? :)
I hadn't looked at your blog in a few days and just blogged about the same thing today! I decided that since I rent and don't own though I live in the perfect area for it (just take my word for it, you don't need to know my exact locale :- ), I will not be renting out my place for out-of-towners for the Inauguration. It's just not worth the headache and possibility that my apartment/personal effects could get trashed and I'd be stuck with the bill. I have a great relationship with my landlord and I want to keep it that way.
@ParadigmShifted - ahhhh, now i get ya! haha..sorry, i'm a bit slow sometimes. if i didn't have a mrs. to convince, hell yeah i'd be up for that :)
@Small Budget Big Style Chick - awesome!!! yeah checked out your site, that's too funny - great minds think alike?
Man, I wished I lived in DC. $20,000 for 1 weeks rental, sweet.
