Do you think showering together REALLY saves water?

Kim K. showering to saveI don't know, but I sure would like to try it! According to my good friend Kim Kardashian though, it works like a charm ;) Any of you remember that whole hoop-lah about her saying she takes showers w/ her BF to save water?

For whatever reason i'm only now coming across these articles, but it's freakin' hilarious. What a helluva PR stunt though, eh? And HOW did i miss it? Man...

But in all seriousness, I don't think it would do the trick. Here's what I gots ta say on it:
  • When 2 people get in the shower together, it usually isn't to "save water". (it's to talk)
  • It still takes you the same amount of time to wash all your body parts. Only now there's the two of you in there, so it'll still take doublish the time. Esp. with all that talking going on!
  • Logistically, it's a nightmare. Unless, of course, you have double-sided shower heads!
  • The average person doesn't try to take quick showers in order to save money. You might believe so before jumping in there, but usually at that point it's so refreshing you try and enjoy it as long as possible.
  • All that "talking" could result in a baby. And babies cost money! And then you'd have to shower with 3 people to save even MORE money! haha....
And to help back up my no-fact hypothesis, here's what FOXNews.com says about it:
"The Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey & Water Science for Schools found that the average American uses two gallons of water per minute while showering, so obviously cutting that in half is helpful. But some experts argue that sharing the faucet with someone you're pretty fond of could lead to activities that prolong the time spent in the shower, therefore doing even more damage."
Of course, I'm always up for the challenge! Ya hear that Mrs. Budgetsaresexy? Wanna do a month-long test case? haha...unfortunately I already know the answer to that and it's not a Yes. I've been told that I need to buy her a shower with TWO shower heads in it (1 for each wall) before we can satisfy this dream of mine...something about getting "too cold" in there? Must be a girl thing ;)

LOL!!! Cracking me up!

I agree with everything, except that two shower heads may increase the amount of 'talking' going on and end up costing you more money, not saving.

I sooo agree with Dedicated. But I honestly enjoy the 2-people-1-shower just fine, and thats without the extra shower head. Must be that an...ahem.... intimate space leads to very in-depth discussions. At that point, who cares about saving water or money? LOL. I love you and this blog. Makes me smile every stinkin day.

Budgets are sexy and so are showers. But I agree with you...two people in the shower means lots of 'talking' and I guess talking makes you sweat coz then we need to stay in the shower even longer. :-)

This is NOT a way to save money.

Yes, it's a girl thing! I get cold easily and would get very cranky about having to step aside to share the water.

I wish I had a bathtub big enough for two, though. I sit in the tub all the time to warm up and read and sometimes even eat while I'm reading. It would be great to make that a party with Mr. 444. He agrees - and maybe someday we'll have that big tub, but as of now, he never ever gets in a tub. (Maybe he's afraid of getting stuck like President Taft? JUST KIDDING! :o)

I don't get it...How does talking end up with a baby? They discuss adoption?

Haha...I had some arguments for showering together working but they may not be appropriate!

LOL! That's awesome! Definitely not your average financial blog discussion ;-)! While we lived in an apt w/ a tiny water heater we had to double up or whoever got there first used up all the hot water. And when you've only got 20min of hot water it cuts down on the 'talking' for sure :-/. Now that we just moved to a house w/ a big water heater the water-saving isn't going to be much of a priority anymore :-).

I for one want my shower time to myself. There will be no shower sharing. Bath-tub sharing sounds much more practical-- it's really cold outside of that stream of water!

This is awesome! Of course it doesn't save water! Even more reason to linger if you've got company!

I think it actually saves us some money. The reason? My finance takes VERY long showers. With me in there I can speed her up! I would say we save about 5 minutes worth of shower time this way.

WOW, didn't expect to see so many comments! and to think i almost didn't post this ;) you guys are too funny. I'm just waiting for the Mrs. to finally read this and chime in. Although i have a feeling my "being cold" comment might get me in trouble and delay any chances of testing this out...

Logistically, showering together is a nightmare if you're trying to actually get clean. What happens to us is that one person shivers at the end of the tub while the other person washes out shampoo/ conditioner. And inevitably, as one person tries to leave, the other person is covered in soap and gets it on the person who has already rinsed off.

And it does get too cold, at least in winter.

However, if you're not actually attempting to get clean, 2 in the shower is a lot of fun!

We've certainly used this practice on the weekends because my DH takes LONG showers and it's a useful way to
a) keep him on task and get him out of there quicker
b) make sure I get some hot water when I shower

He's been known to stand in the shower until the water runs cold, get out, NOT TELL ME, let me get in and then run away and hide while I squeal my way through a very COLD shower.

I'm with paranoidasteroid. No double showering - not even with two shower heads. But bathtubs however, especially two person-sized lovely big soakers... oh yes. That would definitely be frugal. (or something.)

I see what you did here!

FWIW, I don't think it's very frugal. It's just fun.

Why would you get in trouble for the "being cold" comment? It's 100% true!

Very funny post here, dear. (Rhyme time?) My position stands that we should steer clear of the joint showering until either A) you make good on your double shower head promise, or B) you learn how to transform yourself into soap. :)

*added bonus to option B = lots of...ahem...discussion material!

ANNND, of course, it would save money on soap!

Dude, I'm convinced that the shower could be a great place for conversation. Serious, serious conversations. No doubt regarding the nature of time and reality, in the oh-wow-look-dear-we've-been-in-here-an-hour way. Which would probably double the water bill, yes, but who can put a price on good conversation??

AWESOME post, I'm sharing this on my google reader and emailing it to people too... :P

Hey, Mr M and I showered together this morning. Tiny little shower and all. It's a timing problem, two people trying to get ready at the same time. Also, not enough hot water for consecutive showers, the second person gets a raw deal. Never thought about it from a frugal stand point. Guess I have a whole new reason for coed showering :)

Talking, eh? wink wink - nudge nudge...lots of nudging going on, I imagine.

Hubby and I usually share a shower after we've talked. Those are usually quick, because we're tired, you know, from all the talking...

But then we both take another shower the next morning, so really, we've used up more water. LOL

I don't think that shower changes are a good way to save on water to save more money. Lovely showers are one of the few luxuries folks on a budget can enjoy! Don't cut back there! I beg you!

And don't cut back on the talking either! Yeah, it might bring a baby along, but it's so much fun!

Love that the Mrs. commented! (or maybe i don't read your comments often enough, for shame)

saving money? NO. fun? YES.

Hmm, i've found that if the water is hot enough (ie, produces enough steam), i don't get cold when it's not my 'turn' under the showerhead. or maybe the conversation is stimulating enough that I don't notice...?

Nice - I think that most shower "talks" here result in burning through all the hot water as well as some cold. Not only using more water but also heating oil to refill the hot water heater!

We had a shower with two shower-heads on our recent vacation. It saved time when we had to rush out for a 7:30AM tour, but it certainly didn't save water later in the evening!

I'm with the Mrs on this one! Unless you have a really wide shower and doors (instead of curtains) the whole experience can go bad quickly! There is nothing sexy about cold, sticky plastic!

To really save money, practice nudism at home! If you only wear clothes 1/2 a day, then you can hang them up and wear them again before washing. Think of all the loads of laundry you will save!
