Wow, Wal-Mart is almost as Big as my Johnson!

Guest postToo much? Sorry, feeling a bit feisty today ;) You know how us guys are. Seriously though, Wal-Mart is HUGE!!!! I just got this email forwarded over to me by my father who LOVES sending over this sorta stuff (do you find that yours does the same?) and I thought it was pretty interesting if it's indeed true. It not be *accurate* but it's still awesome.

Regardless, companies like Wal-Mart and the like interest me like crazy. The logistics to run such a place is insane! I can barely run myself, and that's on a good day ;) And to bring in SO MUCH freakin' money every single day? Whew - that's one helluva juggernaut. Business-wise I think they're pretty incredible.

But I'll still continue to do my shopping at Target (or Tarjay as we like to call it). I think Wal-Mart has some incredible offers & sales going on, but I always prefer to shop in cleanliness & at a place where everyone smiles and actually seems like they WANT to help you. I'd happily pay a few extra dollars to shop in a visually appealing, stress-free, atmosphere any day. $hit, sometimes I run into Target for something simple & end up enjoying myself for an extra 30-40 minutes! But I digress...

So here we go - 12 fun "facts" on the size of Wal-Mart:
  1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.
  2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!
  3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.
  4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco +K-Mart combined.
  5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer. And many can't speak English.
  6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.
  7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.
  8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).
  9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world
  10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years a go.
  11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)
  12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.
Apparently Wal-Mart can bail out Wall Street! Jeesh. So there you have it, Wal-Mart is almost as big as my hooh-ha. I wonder how long they can keep this title? I bet Google or Apple will catch up to them one day. Soon everything will be digital (even you and me) and we'll be a pile of walking facebooks & tweeterers blogging our way through society...(what?) I dunno, i'm starting to not make sense again, that's my cue to go! Later haters.

I'm with you about not shopping there. Every time I step foot in that store, my teeth start to curl, hence I do what I can to avoid it all together. It is so loud, dirty, and poorly laid out. I would just rather shop in places where I don't get headaches - regardless of the deals.

Poor Winn-Dixie. I have to admit, I'm pretty much a discount store whore. I started shopping at Walmart after their new CEO changed some of their environmental and employment practices (and their awful lighting system). They still probably have a way to go, but they're OK. Target will always have my heart (and a larger-than-necessary percentage of my paycheck), however.

yeah, it really is a shame cuz Wal-Mart DOES have great prices for sure! and i know some stores are better than others, but i have to agree that my head starts hurting the second i walk in there too :( guess it's all about your shopping preferences...

Wow - #15 kind of surprised me. When I thought about it, I realized my family in Washington is in the 10% that don't!

As much as I enjoy saving money, I too shop at Target instead of Walmart. It worth the extra money- and longer drive. Even though I have to drive an extra 15 minutes roundtrip to get to Target rather than Walmart, I find the shorter lines, better customer service, and friendly masses make up the time difference plus some.

It depends on what you buy at Wal-Mart when you're talking about "great prices." I have bought some polo shirts for the kids that hold up well, and I have bought some articles of clothing not worth the price of the wrapper around them. How about size 10 long johns that are too small for a five-year old, you find out only after opening the plastic wrapper?

One annoyance I have with WM is that their grocery department doesn't stock anything vaguely helpful to watching weight. For example, you can find every kind of juice box there except those that are sugar-free. WM annoys me, yet I shop there often to save a few $. Target costs a lot more, and to be honest, their clothing also sometimes does not hold up. But oh yeah - for those (like myself) who complain that Target is more expensive - I regularly find clothes for the kids, like perfectly good sweatshirts, that are market down to like $1.24! How's that for thrifty!?!?

Giggle. J, did you really say that? Oh,I don't even know why I'm suprised, honestly :)

WalMart is huge, but I don't support them, for a multitude of reasons probablly listed in the comments above me that I haven't read yet. I love Target though!

Thanks for the laugh, and I totally agree with you. I can't stand walmart, as well as the employees! I am a totally cheap-o shopper, but I would rather spend a few bucks somewhere else!

Well, consider it a "Supercenter" and "bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco +K-Mart combined!" or smaller than Ron Jeremy's, your pick. (wow, this blog really turned a turn for the worst. and fast!)

Sam Walton definitely has a Johnson that big with those figures! I usually dont like that Walmart set up shop in small towns and destroys small businesses but...I went to Walmart over Christmas to shop for a Kid who we sponsored. I had not been to one in 4-5 years, but man I kinda found some good deals and ended up shopping for about 2 hrs.

Hi there-Do you have the option of buying online? I do my shopping with Asdas (I think they are also a part of Wal-mart now) and it is so convenient and I wouldn't go back to shopping in a store anymore!

Crazy! I knew Wal-Mart was mammoth, but not to that degree! Target wins out for me though too because:

1. Wal-Mart seems to have issues with barcodes, especially ones on coupons. And, I like coupons, so forget that...
2. Target also likes coupons, and even gives you more of them on their website. As they say on Wheel of Fortune... big money! :P
3. Target has amazing clearance. Can't beat new stuff for thrift store prices... last time I was there, I got an awesome red retro alarm clock for $3. I skipped home.

I don't view Wal-Mart as evil or anything... I'm all about discounted prices. I've even heard opinions that Wal-Mart helps to keep inflation down lol. But I only go there when I know for sure that it will be worth the effort in a big way.

I won't shop there, either. They treat their workers like #%$! (pardon my french.) That really bugs me.

I know its trendy to hate Walmart but my reasons are usually different from other folks. I hate Walmart because I'm cheap and they have a lousy coupon policy. There, I said it.

haha..boy, they better get on their ish if they want all us frugal'ers to use our coupons! i never go there so i haven't experienced this myself, but my dad recently told me that Wal-Mart is beating out Target by far each year and increasing their lead....i'm waiting for him to send me the article on it.

@Sharon Rose - that's a good point actually - if you buy online you then don't have to GO to the store! but i like going (to Target, not Wal-Mart) more than online shopping to be around people and such. Still a great idea though :)

This past decade has seen a large increase in productivity. W-mart is responsible for 15% of the increase. One company! Fortunately those that don't like W-Mart don't have to shop there.

You forgot to mention the best statistic that there is! If you counted the combined employees at Walmart as a US state it would be 16th up from the bottom -- just below the population of Nevada.

Anon #1 - It's all the same to me...but i like it how you left "cock" in a comment, it certainly takes balls! (no pun intended)

Anon #2 - What, really? Damn that's pretty crazy. Thx for dropping that knowledge :)
