The $100 Scratch Off Lottery Project.

The $100 Scratch Off Lottery ProjectWelcome to this weekend's $100 Lottery Project! I'm feeling feisty as ever right now, and thought I'd spice things up a bit by doing something ridiculously stupid. But also fun, exciting, silly, and rewarding all mixed into one.

As many of you know, I am a hardcore fan of scratch off lottery tickets. Not only do they pump me full of endorphins, but those lovely pieces of metallic paper allow me to escape into a dream-like world full of happiness & unicorns! Okay maybe not unicorns, but definitely ligors. For me, lotteries really are the best bang for a buck. (so long as you don't get addicted)

I've wanted to do this for years now, but having a captive audience was all I needed ;) And I'll have you know there were many behind the scenes here egging me on too (probably because it's not their money we're using! haha...). I shot out a feeler on Twitter and Facebook to gauge interest, and 25+ of you said to go for it! My favorite response: "You have the insanity of a manatee!" Yes. Yes I do.

The $100 Scratch Off Lottery Project:

  1. I march my crazy a$$ down to the local liquor store.
  2. I pick up 100 assorted $1 scratch-off lottery tickets. All random and spread out, No fun in hitting up the same kind 100 times over.
  3. I scratch each and every one of them off this weekend. (Amounting to orgasmic euphoria)
  4. I post up the results on Monday! The good, the bad, and the finger-hurtin' ugly.
  5. I hand over all the winnings to charity :) In particularly, Project Hopeful - A charity that encourages, educates, and enables families to adopt children with HIV/Aids (and a charity that is near & dear to my friend Jessica, who I admire very much).
I've also started collecting guesses as to what people think we'll be winning. So far we have $76 and $87, and my guess is somewhere around $125 - but I'm hoping for $2.00. Care to add your own?

So Stay tuned for Monday's results! And wish me luck too. You kinda sorta have to since it's all going to charity ;) The more we win, the better we/I/everyone feels! Oh, and I almost forgot - this $100 is coming straight out of my "entertainment budget." I can't be too irresponsible now can I?
-----------------------------
UPDATE: I couldn't help but to chime in and say THANK YOU to all who have decided to match our winnings! I am blown away by your generosity, and I'm sure Project Hopeful will be just as please to hear the good news :) A shout out to the matchers: JerryB, Sid, Forest, Michele, RainyDaySaver, and Brad.
UPDATE: The results are in!!! Check it out.

I'm a new follower so I must ask...do you budget for lottery tickets? I'm going to say that odds are you'll get $2 for at least half of them. So, $100 is my guess. This is fun!!!

I feel lucky too. I think you're gonna hit the jackpot on one of these, just because you've got karma on your side now. So my guess is a net of $950. Good luck for you and this fabulous charity. I had no idea it existed, what a nice gesture.

Good luck! This should be fun, and the proceeds (hopefully you'll hit it big) will go to a good cause. What charity did you have in mind?

Cool project, I'm going with 5$ and 1 case of lead poisoning from all that scratching.

Hmm, I don't know much about the odds for winning these things, but I figure they can't be great -- so I'll say $25.

And if you somehow win a substantial sum of money doing this, I totally won't judge if you decide to keep at least some of it for yourself :)

Hey there! Jessica here... vehemently opposed to lottery tickets (in my opinion, a hobby for the bad at math in my opinion) but thank you sooo much for your pledge to give winnings to Project Hopeful. We're currently working to build a school and job training center for orphans with HIV and AIDS in Africa. The contact info is attached below, just in case you hit it big. Good luck!

That bird pooping on my mohawk today has been nothing but good luck so far!!! I'm totally buying all 100 tonight while it's still on my side. Happy Friday y'all!

If you split the winnings 50/50 with me I'll ask the Lottery Gods to make you hit the jackpot.

By the way, if you like this, may I suggest day trading? Now there's a rush!

J,

Why not drop the same 100 into a poker site (since I know you love it) and donate half of the proceeds after a week?

My guesstimate is $188!

J,

I wonder if Project Hopeful, if asked, would prefer the $100 donation directly... Never know... That would be guaranteed money for them.

I guess $67.

I have a similar project that I use to justify my desire to play scratch-off games: "Savings vs. the Lotto." Every time I buy a scratch-off ticket, I put $1 (or $2, depending on the cost of the ticket) into a savings account. I track everything on a spreadsheet. So far, savings is kicking the lottery's ass, but I love the rush I get when I buy a ticket and get to think "what if I win... big?"

I have horrible luck with the scratch-off lottery tickets here in Ohio. So I'm following my on-going rate of winning(losing?!) here with what will probably happen to you.

So I guess $20 in winnings...but I so hope you prove me wrong!

Haha, this is just plain awesome. But I'd have added a disclaimer that if you hit it big time, the Porsche comes first. ;)

@Evan - That's not a bad idea either. Maybe I'll do that for the next adventure ;) I feel like you always do/win better when playing for more than yourself, and in that case it would contain much more skill! Good idea.

@AG - Backing Up The Truck said - Probably, but as selfish as it sounds my main reason for doing this is for entertainment purposes. I could (and do) donate money to charities all the time, this is just something *extra* for me and them and this blog :)

@Jane - Brilliant! That's def. a great way to go about it, thanks for sharing with us :) Have you blogged about it yet? If not, you totally should. I'd be very interested in reading more.

@Meg | CarsxGirl - You know, as much as I have thought about hitting it big with this particular project, I feel like I wouldn't be keeping my word if I took even a $1 of it. I guess I'm an "all or nothing" kind of guy ;) Plus, I always think about that waitress movie with Nicolas Cage (It could happen to you, I think?) and I always thought how cool it would be to keep your word 100% like that. Although, in that case he DID get half! haha...

J,

Since you're gambling, I'll wager $11.00 in Lotto winnings.

As a side bet, I will match your winnings up to $50.00.

Any one care to join me?

Dude, you serious? You'll donate whatever I win (up to $50) to Project Hope with me? That would be amazing man, seriously. I think you're trying to make me cry.

I got a check for J Money for $20 of my own towards the charity as well. Any one else care to join in?????

I'll play. I'll match the winnings up to $100.

I'll match to $50!

See?! so this IS so much better than just donating $100 bucks. I never would have known that this charity existed either if J didn't post.

I hope you at least get $100! Put it out into the Universe people!

Much more fun than just donating, and donating is awesome!

My family used to buy scratch-off tickets for each of our birthdays--one ticket for each year of our age. The year my mom turned 45, we hit the big-time: we won $25K on a scratcher!! (don't tell the gub'ment, but I was the one who scratched it off; I was under 18 then). That $16K (after taxes) really made up for all the $$ spent on lottery tickets through the years. :)

Good luck!!

And Sense, that is Awesome your mom won so much! (or you for that matter, eh? hehe..) must have been a great feeling :)

Man, you're a nut! ;) You do find unusual ways to give your money away.

I will say $39.

By the way, you may want to mention that this organization does not yet have 501(c)(3) status, so donations are not yet tax deductible. They do appear to be pursuing this at the moment, though.

$24... I wish it would be more, but I've never been lucky with scratch-offs.

The real question is.... who is going to do the same and try to beat JMoney's scratch off total?

What a fun project. Since it's for entertainment purposes with the projected funds going to charity, I hope there's a large return. However, my guess on Twitter was $25. I'm not a fan of lottery or gambling methods, but I can see the purpose in this for research analysis. Who isn't curious as to what kind of odds they would have with 100 $1 scratch-off tickets?! Nice idea!

Man I totally forgot to comment. I knew as soon as I clocked out at work I would forget! As I said in my text, you are a wild and crazy guy...in a good way though! :D

I couldn't possibly participate in the lottery part, but I think this is great fun.

You know I love to give J, so since I am not doing the lottery part I will give $25 even if you win nothing. Psst..it might of been more had it not been for an unfortunate event that cost me $60 in less than 3 seconds. LOL

You are gonna love it! Totally random!
