Book Giveaway #2: The Other 8 Hours

The Other 8 HoursHere’s another great book to give away! Congrats to the last 2 winners Teela and Sarah Oneill who won their own copy of Shoo, Jimmy Choo! (Make sure to email me your addresses, young ladies)

The Other 8 Hours: Maximize Your Free Time to Create New Wealth & Purpose

Here’s what Amazon says about it: “…A large portion of the book is focused on becoming what the author calls a Cre8tor, someone who does not just settle for a paycheck but creates their own financial life. Even readers perfectly at peace with their career and paycheck will find the tips and a companion Web site, featuring downloadable templates for time management and a Goal Achievement Plan, useful catalysts for further professional and personal growth.”

And here’s what Daniel Pink says: “Most of us don’t make great use of our ‘non-work’ hours. This book can help you change that. It’s filled with great advice on how to devote those in-between hours to more enriching, energizing and rewarding pursuits.”

Want it? Drop me a comment with what you WISH you could do in these extra 8 hours every day :)  I will announce the winner this weekend – U.S. Only, sorry.

Being a full time student takes up a lot more than 8 hours a day between classes, hw and studying. I want something to show from my extra time every day, be it a cleaner desk, some decent writing, or a freshly baked cake! (most of which are not currently happening, sigh)

I love to knit – it’s my happy place. My sister recently purchased sheep (she thinks they’re cute), and all of the fleece comes my way. I’m hoping that I love to hand-spin, and that I can build a business from handspinning. But, I totally have to learn how to do it first… and find the time to do it along with that whole pesky working thing. :)

And THAT is what I want to do with my other 8 hours.

    Or be a rock star.

I think my biggest problem is prioritizing my other 8 hours a day. I find myself desiring to mix pleasure and relaxation with being productive. Most of my time is spent relaxing watching tv or partying the weekend away.

Ideally I would like to pursue training for triathlons and furthering my career by learning more on my own.

In my dream 8 hours I would:

spend 1 hour playing with my dogs and husband at the park
    spend 1 hour practicing yoga
spend 1 hour preparing a scrumptious dinner (with a nicely set table and wine)
    spend 2 hours sewing
spend 1 hour on the phone catching up with family
spend 1 hour on pleasure reading
spend 1 hour in bed with the husband

    perfect 8 hours!

I’ve been reading your blog in a while and it’s been a great support for keeping me on track with my finances (my friends love to spend a lot and it’s really tempting not to).

As for my other 8 hours, I wish I could:

*learn some programming to create better websites/blogs
*work on expanding my graphic design portfolio as well as doing some more digital art (I never seem to have time to do this)
*study for the GRE and take it so I can get on the ball on applying to schools already

This should be minus working out which I already do for about 2 hrs a day. I just can’t seem to find the other 6 hours for the above…

Really, there are another 8 hours? I need someone to prove it. Seems like get off at 5 and bed at 11 so only 6 hours tops! Put an hour of driving and 2 hours of riding I only have 3 left and gotta eat and veg out.

Maybe I really do need to learn where these 8 hours are, might buy it if I can’t win it (as usual).

With my other 8 hours (usually less, but I know that’s not the point) I have a large list of things I’d like to do but don’t. In no particular priority:

    -Exercise more
-Read more (like The Other 8 Hours? hint hint…)
    -Watch TV less
-Work on skills for current job
-Night classes for Master’s (maybe decide what the Master’s will be in first?)
-Brainstorm/work a side hustle that may or may not replace main income
-Think of ideas for my genius invention that will make me a millionaire and millions of others go “why didn’t I think of that?”
    -Organize apartment/life
-Write thoughts in journal to organize thoughts (or so that I can sell my autobiography due to the fame of the previously mentioned genius invention)

I would love to have some extra time to do some reading and even some self reflection. Doesn’t seem like we have much time anymore to have a free mind just to think about our day (ok, I know it sounds cheesy, but I do really think that we need time to just reflect on our lives).

    Ernest,

There is plenty of time in the day when self-reflection can be done. During your morning (and evening) commute, instead of listening to the radio, think about where you are going with your life and if it’s the direction you want, analyze past mistakes so you can learn from them, etc. You just have to carpe minutam (seize the minute).

I would use that 8 hours to study as much as possible for my ultimate goal of becoming a financial planner. My plan is to focus on those people that are at the verge or at bankruptcy and who want to live beyond that process and come out educated and with a plan to succeed.
