Happy April Book Giveaway Month!

I’ve got a crap ton of financial books to give away (like, 19 copies so far), so I thought we’d make April the month to dish ’em all out :) I’ll still be running my daily blog posts as normal, but every other day or so we’ll throw in a quick mini-review of a book to giveaway too.  Then, at the end of every weekend, I’ll select all the winners and ship ’em out!  Whatcha think about that?

We’ll start with an awesome one today too – just cuz I like y’all:

Book Giveaway#1: Shoo, Jimmy Choo!: The Modern Girl’s Guide to Spending Less and Saving More

SHOO, Jimmy Choo!Remember when Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw faced the brutal realization that she couldn’t buy her apartment because she’d already spent her money on a closet full of Manolos? Well, if Carrie had met Catey first – and read Shoo, Jimmy Choo!, of course – she’d already have owned her co-op, had a pile of savings and been on her way to a comfortable retirement! And Shoo, Jimmy Choo! can do the same thing for you!

About the author: Catey Hill

I am the Money Editor for the New York Daily News website (nydailynews.com). With Shoo, Jimmy Choo!, I set out to write a funny, practical “girlfriends guide” to personal finance for 20- and 30-something women. (The ones with a closet full of shoes…and the credit card bills to prove it.) With a “Girl, I’ve been there” voice along with worksheets and exercises, I help women evaluate why they spend, get out of debt, and create a savings and retirement plan that even allows for the occasional splurge (because really, who can live without at least the occasional mani-pedi or brand-new dress?). I cover spending, credit cards, student and auto loans, saving, investing, buying a home, and more.

TO WIN 1 OF 2 COPIES: Drop a comment with your most expensive shoe purchase :)  I realize this book is pretty girly (or 100% girly, really) but if you’re a dude this would make a most excellent present for your gf/wife/mistress! Good luck everyone. I will announce the winner on Sunday night.  Oh, and only those with valid U.S. addresses can win, sorry.

Keep the book, but felt compelled to answer.

$425 for some Elephant Skin Cowboy Boots, Black Jacks. They are comfortable and look great!

Guess I am not the most frugal all the time but they should last forever basically. Figured I would start you out with a high number so others feel better about theirs.

Did you really quote an episode from sex and the city? Is that a common show for you? Just curious.

$250 on a pair of leopard print -pony hair- peep toe-4inch high Mary Janes, they are SO perfect I have them in my closet, in shoe bags. I think I’ve only worn them once!!!

I did not feel so bad about the purchase because I mostly used Xmas gift $$$ money, would I spend the same amount out of pocket for the same shoe? Probably, they are just THAT perfect!

The most I’ve ever paid was $200 for a pair of black platform pumps from Cole Haan.

They went on sale my birthday weekend, and were comfortably perfect to wear for my upcoming job interviews.

Requesting this book on behalf of my wife. She is terrible with money.

I don’t know the most expensive pair she has bought, but I do know she is trying to figure out a way to buy a pair of Christian Louboutin’s without me finding out. I think they are like $800.

I ruin shoes faster than anyone. I pay more for tennis shoes than I ever do for heels. I don’t think I’ve paid more than $50 for a pair of heels.

I’m sure I haven’t spent the most on a single pair, but I’ve definitely spent in the $200-$300 more times than I’d like to admit. The most expensive were probably a pair of purple, patent-leather, peek-toe Ferragamo pumps. They were close to $300 (even though they were on sale in an outlet).

An excellent gift for your girlfriend/wife/mistress? Lol! You crack me up.

The most I’ve ever spent on shoes was $70 for a pair of tennis shoes senior year of high school. Since decluttering, I only have 8 pairs of shoes, but back when I was buying shoes like crazy, I bought everything at TJ Maxx. Got some great name brand stilettos for less than $40! :-D

90 for a pair of Teva brand winter style walking shoes. Wish I had better words for them – they were worth it – beautiful and practical in just the way I needed. The need to wear orthotics keeps me buying practical shoes.

I’ve spent $330 on a pair of heels for one of my friends weddings. Only wore them for that day, and didn’t even make it through the entire reception because my feet were killing me. Yeah, sad I know. Not to mention that I buy at lease one pair of shoes every month. It’s bad — perhaps this book could help me!

I spent $400 on a pair of black, knee-high boots with a ridiculous 4″ heel… because who doesn’t wear stiletto heels when its cold and icy/snowy outside? I still love them, though….
And, it has been 21 days since my last shoe purchase!

I love my shoes, but can’t reason with spending an arm and leg on them. Most would probably be $90 for tennis shoes. I always buy heels when they’re on sale. :)

The most I’ve ever spent on shoes was $150 for a pair of basic black knee high boots, but they turned out to be a terrible purchase, because I was living in Charleston, SC at the time, where it was rarely cold enough to justify wearing them. By the time I moved further north, my feet had inexplicably grown a size, and they no longer fit.

I usually tend toward the $30 (or less) shoes, and I’m a sucker for clearance.

I have, however, purchased a pair of cowboy books for $90 – which I tend to wear on a daily basis. I also spent a good $75 on a pair of high heeled, knee high boots, which I’ve owned for years now. :) Love them both.

I am not entering the contest in order to win the prize. I have the book. I have read it and it is wonderful. However, confession is good for the soles and my former shoe whoring is no secret. I can’t narrow it down to one pair, so I am going to talk about one sale.

Thanksgiving 2008. Saks presale. Chaos on the sales floor. Shoes were 75% off with an additional 50% off of the sales price. I got two pairs of Jimmy Choos, one pair of Kate Spades, a pair of Cole Haans and the most delicate and classy sexy pink peep toe Valentinos that you can imagine. Across the hall in the Fashion Show Mall was Nordstrom (Vegas is dangerous like that). Sale there too. Stuart Weitzman oscar shoe and kate spade mary janes that were merlot patent with leopard print pony. It was a tough afternoon out after work. Total investment for the day: Approximately $2600.

I think I went to DSW after that, but it really didn’t count. All of those shoes have been sold to pay off my debt. Yippee. I miss my shoes.

I paid $79 for a pair of 5.5 inch high camel-colored boots. First fashion purchase since getting my new job. I usually buy (really cute) shoes from Target or 60 percent off.
I promptly broke the 5.5 inch heel dancing 3 weeks later.
I was saving for a pair of Christian Louboutins, but unless I can get them insured against loss, I’ll keep my money.
