I Got Fired.

There – I said it out loud.  I got fired.

And just like that I’m a full-time blogger :)

What do you say when that happens to you?  When you’re drafting a post one minute titled  “Designing Your Own Lifestyle”, and then seconds later it becomes a reality?  Is that fate?  Luck?  What are the odds that you get terminated the day before you give your 2 weeks notice?  I don’t know… but I’ve got to say I haven’t felt this alive in quite a while.

How it happened

All kinds of fast, that’s how.  First, I read a memo to all employees that our paycheck’s going to be delayed a week.  I’m pissed off because it’s just thrown out there as if that’s totally normal and OK, without any explanations whatsoever, so I decide it would be smart/ballsy/awesome to reply all with a quick “Does that mean our company is in trouble??” Little did I know I was already on the chopping block, and my email would get shut off 5 minutes later (classy).

Within seconds, I get a half-dozen frantic calls from a co-worker, and a pile of text messages saying it was urgent to call him back (I was currently indisposed on the metro).  I call him back and hear that he was just let go, and that I should probably watch my back when I walk through that door. The one that’s staring me right in the face 3 feet away.  Wow.

I stand there for about 15 seconds running through all the possibilities of what’s about, or not about, to happen – and then I walk in.  The whole time I’m climbing up those stairs, I just keep thinking “Today could be your last day. Today could be your last day.” I was a little giddy, and I was a little nervous. (okay, a LOT nervous)

As soon as I walk through that door I’m called into “the office.”  I’m told to take a seat, and I say something stupid like “is that the seat for fired people?” and I refuse to sit down ;)  And then he Donald Trumps me.  “Restructuring” he says. “Aka our company is flat broke,” I think. Goes on to tell me 1/2 of the start-up is canned, and that he’s sorry it *had to be* done now, right before Xmas. No talk of severance, no signing of anything, no insurance mention, nothing.  Just a 1-2-3 out the door you go.  (after turning over my keys, of course.)

5 years at the company over. Just like that.

What I did over the next hour

There’s a lot of things that go through your mind at this point – but the one thing I didn’t want to do was burn any bridges.   After all, a man’s gotta keep his reputation!  Do you want to be known as the guy who told you to F*ck off and that he hates your face? Of course not.  You want to leave that joint as smoothly and smartly as the first day you signed on.

Plus, as far as my situation went, who the hell was going to MAKE all the stuff our company was selling? All those websites and baubles and widgets, etc? I’m the only designer?? They hadn’t thought about that yet (you’ll see why in a bit), so I promptly emailed everyone in the company – from my personal email since my work email had been disabled – and let them know it was a pleasure working with them.  And it had been – for the most part :)  And then I called my CEO (who wasn’t the one who fired me) and thanked him as well. Because I think it’s an important thing to do, and it also shows respect.

But ultimately, all that thanking and ass kissing helps set you up for one thing, and one thing only – future business.  Maybe off a reference, or a lead, or even with the same company down the road – you just never know. So within all the thank yous and “let’s grab beers” sometimes, I planted the seed that the Design Shop of J$ is now open for business! Even though I have no idea if it is, or if I’d even want to be associated w/ the company ever again.

And guess what happened?  The same guy that fired me 4 hours earlier called me up and said he needed my help?!!! HAH!  Didn’t see that one coming ;)  Who knows if anything will come of it (we’re still in talks to see if this new relationship makes sense – aka if they want to pay my now higher freelance rates!), but the point is you just really never know.  And if you can be proactive about it, and let people know how you can benefit THEM – even when they’re least expecting it (like when they’re firing you) or they don’t even know they need you – the chances of success becomes much higher.

It was then time to pack up, and get out of there.

My Newly Designed Lifestyle

So now what? What happens when you’re now part of an ugly statistic of unemployment? Party time – Wooooo!!!!  Haha….   nah, this ain’t the old J$ anymore ;) While I did consume 2 adult beverages with a friend right after, I simply went into survival mode and powered up Plan B.  The plan I was trying to pull off come January 1st, and the one I’d been saving up $50,000 for.  You know – The “be the boss of me” one!  We’re two weeks ahead of schedule, and about $4,000 off (boooooo) but reality is what it is and you’ve gotta do what it takes to make $hit happen.

I called up my girl who’d been holding a desk for me at her awesomely sexy design studio (where I’m currently typing this out) and I told her the time has finally come.  She welcomed me in, I signed my new $500/mo office lease, and one hour later I was unpacked and working out of the new J. Money Headquarters :)  Pretty insane, huh?

Moving forward…

I’m not exactly sure what happens going forward as I’ve never worked for myself before.  I know I’ll need more money, and that I need to hustle even MORE than I was before (I just lost $70,000+ a year for crying out loud), but I’m feeling pretty damn positive about things.

THIS IS IT!!  MY DREAM STARTS NOW!!!

I’m a freakin’ full-blown entrepreneur bitches!!!   Haha… This is how I choose to use my time now. I am no longer working anymore. I am blogging, and building, and learning, and networking, and helping, and collaborating, and purely doing exactly what makes me happy every day. And I’m giving myself 1 year to make it sustainable – absolutely no job searching (yes – the wife has signed off!)

I know things won’t be perfect, and I’ll probably have a financial break at next month’s Net Worth update, but at the end of the day I can say I’m DOING it.  I am taking this opportunity and running as far as I possibly can with it.If I fail, F it. It’s not every day you get a wake up call like that ;)

————————–
UPDATE: There are rumors going around that my (ex) CEO is getting $480,000 a year.  How sick is that?  For a company 10 6 people strong? Also heard the remaining employees may have to defer paychecks for the next 2 months… it’s safe to say I don’t miss that place.

UPDATE #2: THANK YOU!!!! Wow, guys, THANK YOU for all the love & support!!!  I wish I could get fired every week :) Seriously, I have never ever been this bombarded with messages and emails and calls and tweets and everything y’all have been sending over so far.  I don’t know what to say.  Just know that I am deeply touched, and I am reading every last comment you guys leave! Thank you so much for believing in me – it means everything in the world.  The next time I doubt myself the first thing I’m doing is coming back here to re-read all your kind words :)  God bless everyone, have a happy holidays!!!

UPDATE #3: The company has since went under.

I have to admit when I saw the title of your post in my feeder, I was holding my breath, hoping when I opened the post I’d see some playful tongue and cheek about getting fired from doing laundry and shrinking something.

I can’t believe that this all happened so fast, so abruptly and the week before Christmas. You are so wonderfully optimistic. so sorry you’re going through this right now, but excited for your future.

You finally have a shot at doing something you’ve wanted to do for a while (work for yourself) and now you have no excuses not to. You’re an extremely successful person and I’m sure this new venture will be no different. You’ve even got the $ in the bank for back up (which is a lot more than probably most people have in case of emergency!) Good luck J$ and I look forward to your posts as a newly freed man!

Best of luck. I went out on my own over a decade ago and have never regretted it. A few boring things:

You’ll need to pay estimated taxes, make sure to put away money from each check you receive. At some point you’ll want to think about what form of business is best for you (LLC, S-corp, etc.). As soon as you cash flow permits set-up a retirement plan for yourself (SEP, solo 401k, etc.). Get a business accounting system in place. Many, many more but this stuff is part of the game so to speak.

Absolutely, positively, EVERYTHING happens for a reason. There are no accidents in life. Even though you were going to give a two week notice, it’s obvious there is a greater plan for your life. Sometimes our greatest work comes in moments of uncertainty. One day you’ll look back and say, “Wow, if I hadn’t gotten fired, ___ might not have happened…” Be encouraged, your best is yet to come! Earlier this year I was fired as well. I wasn’t prepared and didn’t have the guts to try freelancing and being my own boss. So I found a full-time job within 2 months. Luckily I was given some major breaks over the next few months and ended up boosting my side freelance work by getting a gig blogging for a huge Canadian newspaper.

So good for you for taking this huge step and committing yourself to this! It’s amazing what kind of doors open for you once you put yourself out there. Even though it was lame that they fired you so close to Christmas (and with no severance package!?), but you have such a good attitude about it. Can’t wait to hear about your journey! :)

Keep in mind that, if you feel ambitious and depending on your location, you can get severance from the directors from the corporation. In most provinces, directors are jointly and severably and personally liable for unpaid salary (which includes severance), unpaid expenses and unpaid vacation. I had an employer go bankrupt out from under me, and it took a year or so, but the directors eventually settled for 80% of what I was owed (actually, me and a group of friends got together, that way we could split the legal costs and use one lawyer). You have to start by suing the corporation, and if you can’t get relief from them, then you go after the directors. In our case, the company was bankrupt, so once the bankruptcy judge said “all done”, it was a formality to sue the company, get told “no”, and then go after the directors.

Ugh. It just goes to show, a company only cares about the bottom line. There really is no employee loyalty. None whatsoever.

I work for a small company and even though they try to cultivate a culture of respect and we have employee benefits, etc. I know deep down that its really all about the company. It seems anyone from CEOs to the janitor is replaceable. But hey dude at least you have savings. I wish you the best, you seem like a nice person. :)

Someone raised you right! I’m just going to repeat what others have said about looking back on this day…you will….and you will smile…no matter what happens. When my husband lost his job, we realized if we cut way back, he was able to stay home with our kids. How special and awesome is that?!?! Not many people can say that anymore. But we can!! And how many late-twenty-somethings (did you hit the big 3-0 yet??) can say they are able to do what you’re about to do? Not many!!!! But you can!! See…you’re already smiling. :)

J$…great posting, really. From someone who got laid off a year ago due to the banking fiasco but I’m still here and like you, I squirreled away $ knowing the end was coming to my fabulous job and salary.

You handled your exit with class and grace. One thing I tell people over and over is to avoid burning bridges no matter what. It’s amazing how many times you’ll cross paths with the same people in your career.

Sure, you have to build up a mega-emergency fund for fallow times such as the last year, but overall it has been WONDERFUL. No more annual reviews, no sword hanging over my head, no boss per se (just clients who do need some hand-holding and flattering at times).

Yo! Man, you’re not kidding – time goes by incredibly fast! And you wanna know what’s funny? I’m only just NOW feeling like a full-time blogger ;) How crazy is that? It literally just sunk in, haha…

And yeah, it’s def. as awesome as I had hoped it would be. It’s kinda strange not seeing people every single day like you do at a 9-5, but interacting with you all online makes a huge difference in keeping me sane ;) The other biggest difference I’ve seen is that when you work for yourself you tend to OVER do it too. There are times I’ll sit here for 15-16 hours straight and realize I haven’t left the house and/or eaten all day. There’s no more structure to my day, or anyone telling me to do anything or be somewhere. So I had to adjust to that most recently and force myself to take breaks and to NOT work as hard. But at the end of the day it’s all fun stuff and goes back to the company of YOU, so I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I don’t think it’s for everyone though – you gotta be crazy motivated, and it’s not always all rainbows and smiles. Your post on going out on your own was spot on the other day – I enjoyed it :)

Hey J$! I just found your website and this post. I know a while has passed since you wrote it, but I still wanted to say congratulations because your are following your dream and succeeding at it. I was scapegoated out of a position i held for four years. Had planned to leave, but was pushed out first (was trying to hang in there for another 6-9 months). That’s just the way works out, right? At my former job I was well paid and terribly miserable. I’m talking “can’t wait for Fridays and crying starting 2pm on Sunday because I have to go to work on Monday, and a nervous stomach all day every week day” type miserable. But I held my head up and never let them know they were getting to me. When I went to sleep the night after my firing (which was technically me resigning because they were oh so king to give me a choice – negotiated a better package by resigning), I swear to you that it was the best, most peaceful night’s sleep I’d had since before I started working there.

I’d been “playing” around online saying that I wanted to do it professionally. My husband and I talked and he is totally supportive of me going for it. So I am. Have had to cut back (A LOT), and I (try not to (worry) about the money because I knew my new venture would take time. But most importantly I am incredibly happy.

So glad to have found your inspirational, aspirational, and motivational website. It’s one of the thongs that keeps me hanging in there and pursuing my dream. Continued success to you!

I really hope you find the same :)

This is soo similar to the story we just experienced with my husband. He too served 5 years at our local eye bank and much like you, was doing what he was to do…following protocol and his boss called two hours later cussing at him. She had done this before when she didn’t feel control so as nervous as we were, we thought it was a quick temper tantrum that would blow over. It wasn’t. She continued to let him go by providing an email to all of the 7 staff members that he CHOSE to quit. The kicker came a few weeks later when he was denied unemployment due to her twisted version of what occurred. She placed him at the bank at a different time with a different outcome. The only reference he made was during that conversation which she called cussing at him…he warned her that he would place his two week notice in if she continued to cuss and name call him.

He too desired to quit THIS year…he has a master’s degree he was unable to use there and promotions he was promised that never followed through. Ugly place. We pray a job that fits his skill set comes soon. I’m faithful it is and if anything, we’ll joyfully look back and smile…we hope.

*Work proof (we hardly did any) ;-O

Then one day a guy I worked closely with was
called into the office. He was gone in minutes!!
A few minutes later all the locks were changed.
Too bad. He was about 18- 24 months from
retirement. He had worked there just short of
thirty years but like management says, “Isn’t
    thirty years long enough?”

It was hard to leave so suddenly but those who stayed
found it more miserable to stay. Thirty+ people. Dwindling,
dwindling down…. They are now (after the “merger”) down
to nineteen people. Looks like two more could be gone before
the end of 2015. This is December…. “Merry Christmas! Now,
    get out!”

Hey! You found an oldie but goodie here :) Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since this fateful day, wow… And even harder to believe I’m still bogging full-time! A miracle for someone who naturally isn’t a writer – hah!

Been enjoying our discussions back and forth lately – thx for always giving me interesting things to ponder.

Well I was laid off once and the job I had paid me ok salary. Moved to Toronto and got paid 70% higher salary. Promoted twice since then and now makes about 2.9 times higher than the job that I was laid off of. This is life. Opportunities are everywhere even when you think times are really really bad. Thanks for sharing your story.

Sometimes getting fired is the best thing that can happen to you; in my case, it led me out of a job I had started to hate.

    J,

This is the first time I read this post. I just found your site last week. I have to say, it felt right in line with what I’m going through. I work for the DoD and our budget expires Friday. Either the president signs a new budget, or we get furloughed.

When I was reading your post, I felt as if I was about to get the push I wasn’t sure I was prepared to make.

Glad it turned out well for you!!

I hope it pushes you in whichever direction makes you most happiest! Big decisions are sometimes nice when others make it for you ;) Though only if it was something you really wanted deep down, haha… It’s been a fun (and wild) 6 years since first posting this. Still just as glad, if not more, that it happened!

Wow that is an amazing story! It just goes to show that having a plan A, B, C … is a great idea … it also goes show that one saving an emergency after reducing debts is highly, and having an energetic positive outlook helps you to move to the next thing etc … if your readers are interested in living overseas …. I mention some of the zillions of ops available in teaching and later other areas etc etc … your blog is very encouraging and colourful – CPO, From the Far Side of the Planet

Don’t worry – a lot of people thought I did :) I was pretty tricky back then haha… (and a lot more anonymous! so i wouldn’t get in trouble for such things while at work!)

Sad to say this is all too common in tech. I went thru six of these shutdowns/downsizings in a 35 year career. Folks at the top always take care of themselves first. I especially remember a company where upper management routinely awarded themselves double digit bonuses and pay raises while worker bees endured repeated layoffs and wage freezes.

As for deferring paychecks for two months, well, you can’t be serious. But a little surprised there weren’t signs of trouble before disaster struck.

Oh yeah – def. serious and there were def. signs too! I was very fortunate to leave with only 2 weeks of lost paycheck… Been self-employed ever since too – almost 8 years now! :)

At this point, when I get a new job I almost just assume eventually I’ll get fired and it’s only a matter of time. Might be my natural course of how to move on. Interviewing is hard when you’re working full time. Quitting is a bit scary as you are cutting off your income and you’re force to be accountable since it’s your decision. Getting fired is the guilt free way to cut the cord and do it with the safety net of unemployment income. My next job is my last I think. In the mean time, I’ve created a resource for people that get fired on a blog called Getting Canned. (I guess that domain could be taken another way right?…Maybe someday I’ll get an offer for the domain from someone catering to the fetish.)

I can instantly relate to you, as getting fired may lead to beginning of a new chapter in your life. If you were not fired then, things would not have been same
