3 Things Money Can’t Buy… *sniff*

Sad face onion
As I’m sitting here typing, I feel like crap and my nose and eyes seem like they have an endless supply of water stored up in my face.  I don’t know what happened in the past 24 hours, but needless to say I’m sick as a dogg. (spelled just like Snoop would have it)  But as I sit here sneezing all over my keyboard, I can’t help but wonder how much I’d pay to get right back to my normal healthy self again?  $100?  $200? $500??

It doesn’t really matter as we all know, though, cuz no matter HOW filthy rich we are (or wish to be one day!), there’s never a way to just make all your problems disappear with money. At least when it comes to head colds.  So number 1 on the list money can’t buy is HEALTH.  It can help get you the best drugs and medicines (and doctors) around, but it can’t fix your problem in a snap as, say, paying a bill would. And that just plain sucks.  You don’t even wanna know how much I’d be willing to dish out right now to be chipper again :(

Number 2 on this super official list of mine, is brains.  You just can’t get out there and pick up an extra set of smarty cells like you could with a computer or a car, or anything else inanimate.  Human upgrades come from time, and always taking on new experiences and desires to learn.  You can always pay for schooling and books, and everything else that *helps* us learn and become smarter individuals, but just like with health you can’t drop a pile of benjamins and magically start thinking better.  Which makes us awesome, and scary, at the same time (like when people want to skip ahead in life the fast way, either by cheating or stealing, or God forbid killing.  Important stuff takes time – get it through your head!)

And then of course, lastly, we have Love.  You’ve said it before, I’ve said it before, and even those crazy Brits,  The Beatles, have sung it all before :) Money can do a loooooot of powerful and exciting stuff, but it can never earn you true love or friendships.  That comes from being the best YOU that you can be (I’m getting all sappy in my sickness!). It may help you dress better, and impress better w/ that fancy ride or reservation, but at the end of the day people connect directly to PEOPLE – not cash. All the money in the world doesn’t grant you the gift of relationships, you’ve got to build those up and nurture ’em just like you do with that brain of yours.

So my 3 thoughts for the day are:

  1. Appreciate your health. Exercise when you can, eat well, and just do your all-time best to pay attention to your body (ow ow!)
  2. Keep learning!  The more you seek what you don’t know, the stronger and sexier your brain gets!
  3. And lastly, always be yourself.  Whenever I’ve tried acting like someone else to get a girl, or the better job, or whatever cockamany thing I was after, I’ve failed miserably.  And to be honest, it’s not worth keeping up even IF you get lucky and achieve that master prize at the end.  It’s much better to embrace the skills and traits that you do have (or don’t have) and just continue doing your best.  People gravitate toward sincere people, and it takes all kinds to make this world go around :)

Boy, I get so philosophical when I’m sick. Who knew? Haha… but now if you’d be so kind as to pardon me, I’m gonna hop off this computer and go drink lots of fluids and rest up like a bunch of you are about to yell at me about :)  But unfortunately money doesn’t help keep this blog running either – unless you know of another J. Money I can borrow?

Money can’t buy health but health sure is expensive! My 1 year old is a million dollar baby between surgeries, hospital stays, specialists and medicine. I’m just glad I have insurance! Feel better!

    Rest up dawg!

It’s definitely true, money is just a number on a computer screen that people use to determine if they will give you stuff!

Those numbers mean nothing to who you are as you connect person to person with someone.

Couldn’t agree more. I was born with a shorter leg, so, in 28 years I’ve had my share: a prothesis, hernia, and last but not least a bad fall with subsequent back fracture…

Happily I think I live in one of the best nations in the world, sanity wise, where every cure is free and provided by the best professionals (here’s one fact little to no one knows about Italy :))

Luckily enough I’m pretty smart, I am a member of MENSA myself, and I believe my brains pretty much helped me in my life, more than once.

More luckily yet, I have a wonderful wife and an almost 7 years old son….we’ve been maybe hasty at the time, and it wasn’t programmed at all, and yet everything just went for the best….so, I have to completely agree with you in this post, thanks for pointing it :)

    All the best

Of course you can’t buy brains – how many zombies do you see at the grocery store paying for their brains with a credit card?

Feel better! Being sick is the worst.

Thanks I really needed this post today. Thanks for reminding me what is important.

I have all the above three, but sometime forget to be thankful for it, rather focusing on the negatives.

I’m impressed too, the only thoughts I have when I am sick is that teacher voice from the Peanuts cartoon in my head. :-)

I think sometimes people get so caught up in making money and owning impressive stuff that they lose sight of these things that are truly important in life. Thanks for the reminder.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Feel Better! I am still recovering from surgery, so I totally understand wanting to feel better instantly. I have been learning how to let things heal and to not push so hard.

Love the post! I was reading another blog this morning about life planning, not just financial planning and I think this post fits with it. Like if you were to die in 24 hrs what would you regret not doing. For me it would be not going back to school, and traveling as much as I could to experience new things. OK, traveling isn’t free, but learning and experiencing new things can be. Thanks for the great thoughts for the day. :)

Perfect point J$! I always like to think, “What will be the small set of things I think about when I draw my last breath?” That’s what is most important to me, usually. Helps make crucial decisions.

@Lily – Oh man, sorry to hear that! Very true though – that stuff adds up like crazy :(
@Adam – HAH! I like that… and I’m gonna steal it and put it on Twitter ;) “money is just a number on a computer screen that people use to determine if they will give you stuff!”
@Luca – Hey! Thanks for stopping by all the way from Italy – that’s awesome yo. So glad to hear you guys are HAPPY too! Despite some obstacles – way to own it and do your thing :)
@No Debt MBA – Haha, very true my good friend.
    @Million Mile Secrets – Yessir! Thanks :)
@ib – I know, it’s hard sometimes :( We all get that way though – just gotta keep reminding ourselves we can only do so much and that we are blessed wayyyyy more than others out there! Glad this helped you :) It helped me too, actually.
@Karen Hartzell, Graco – Haha, well I was *determined* to put something out straight from my heart this morning. And was just thankful I found something that related to money so I could blog about it! :)
@Kate – Thanks, Kate! Hope you’re doing better than I over there ;)
@LB – Hey, cool! Yeah – I ask myself that 24hr question too every now and then. And honestly, at least in this exact moment of time, I can’t say there’s a single thing I regret that much. I really want to have kids in the very near future, but I don’t think you can do that oin 24 hours ;)
@Soam – Interesting! Never heard of, but will go and check it out. Thank you, sir :)
@Peliroo – Hey!! Haven’t seen ya in a while – thanks so much for stopping by :) Love that thought process too, that’s awesome. Have a great week Pely!

Sorry to hear you are poorly – hate this one myself. And from what I have read of you (ha, ha) you don’t strike me as very patient either. Feel your pain existentially at the moment – I am still on limited walking myself; hell for a long distance runner who was training for a marathon.

    As to the three things:

    1) Money can’t buy you health but makes illness so much more comfortable.
    2) It cannot buy you brains but the way it is going one will need rather a lot of it for education (I come from countries with welfare state, remember; and it is breaking down as we speak)
    3) love is the one I wholeheartedly agree with.

Look after self – sending virtual remedies (garlic, flax seeds boiled and soaked etc.)

I just wanted to say that “cockamamy” is not used nearly enough in today’s conversations, and I plan on inserting more often into mine.

Feel better soon–colds and flus are the worst.

    J$ – hope you’re feeling better fast!

If you were at my house, I’d give you a shot of garlic syrup, and have you steam your head.

I’ve got recipes on my blog for garlic syrup, and the sinus infection aromatherapy blend that we use, as well as cough syrup (our family has multiple food allergies – wheat & corn, and then some, so regular cough syrup is out for us). Here’s the link:

@Maria Nedeva – Flax seeds? Thanks? haha… and you’re right – I’m not that patient ;) Though I am getting better as the years go by.
@Cordelia – It’s one of my faves! Though I still don’t know how to spell it properly :( Google doesn’t help much, either…
@Christine Hansen – Thanks! But I’m too lazy to try that ;)
@ShoeGal – Haha… also, randomly enough, I’d like to switch bodies w/ a woman for 24 hours too. I think that would be fun :)
@Mel @ Trailing After God – Thanks Mel! Sorry to hear about your condition, I can’t even imagine :(
@retirebyforty – Ouch. Yeah, kids always spread their little germs! haha… glad you guys are better now :)

Had a big health scare recently and I realised the very same thing. Money can buy me my health but fixing it up sure takes a lot out of my pocket! Made me sit up and think about the things I take for granted… hope you are getting better by the day.. ;p

Ah, being sick and sappy. I’ve been there. But what you say is absolutely true. You can certainly buy things to aide you in those categories– herbs, medicines, education, and maybe a snazzy, tight pair of jeans or something; but when it comes down to it, money’s just money. It’s paper. Well, not even that so much these days. Like Adam said, it’s numbers. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon! We just did a post at Mango Money on what to do when you’re bored– or sick in this case! Check it out, you’ll have fun with some of these. And you don’t even need to get out of bed for many of them! http://www.mangomoney.com/blog/cheap-fun/bored-bored-bored

It’s unbelievable to me that stupid people are the ones who suddenly come into large amounts of money and then loose it all by listening to other stupid people’s suggestions.
