(Guest post by T. Thema Martin as part of our Side Hustle Series — enjoy! ;))
Over the past few years, my income had steadily decreased because of the effects of the recession. I standardly live a debt-free (except mortgage) and minimalistic (no car) life. However, I lost a lot of income sources in June 2010. Therefore, I was looking for replacement streams of income.
I had previously tended bar at upscale socials, but I couldn’t find any bartending jobs. I then brainstormed to see what jobs I could do from home. Being a “Phone Actress” – the technical term for a Phone Sex Operator – came to mind. I did some research on a Sunday, and applied to 10 companies that same day. The next day, Monday, one company contacted me and on Wednesday, another company contacted me. There began my career as a Phone Sex Operator (PSO).
How To Get Started
You can locate PSO positions on a job board such as SexyJobs.com or you contact companies directly such as LipService.net and ChatRecruit.com. You can also chat with other PSOs at PhoneSex.yuku.com. If you have a corded landline, a headset, a positive attitude about sex, and a sexy voice, you are hired! Also, if you are non-white and/or have an accent, you are in high demand by recruiters.
To apply, you have to complete a standard application and leave a voicemail for the recruiter so that she can judge your voice. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young, black or white, or heavy or skinny; it is the voice that counts the most. If she likes your voice and you pass the standard background check, you are then required to attend a one-hour phone orientation or you are given material to read as your orientation. Then, you are put on the phones to deal with sexually-charged men.
Before you take your first call, you have to think of an alias and background information to use. An easy alias, such as Jennifer, works best so that callers can remember you. If it is too exotic, clients won’t remember it. I suggest using information that you are familiar with. For example, if you say that you are from Miami but you know nothing about the neighborhoods, a problem may occur if you have a caller from Miami. It is okay to say that you have a degree, but I would not suggest stating which college you went to. I suggest stating a college that you are familiar with or say that you got your degree online. You don’t want to give out any information that can be easily traced back to you.
The Ideal Phone Sex Operator
If you live by yourself, that is a plus because you don’t have to worry about other household members making noise while you are on the phone or being uncomfortable with the explicit language that you are using.
You need 4 main skills to be successful as a PSO: listening, organizational, imaginative, and improvisational. You have to listen very carefully to your clients in order to follow their lead. For example, if he says that he loves pulling your “black” hair, you have to remember not to mention your “red” hair if you are a redhead.
I keep a client card for repeat callers. Therefore, when they call, they are impressed that I remember what they like and what they look like. You have to be able to imagine the caller’s fantasy. If he says that the two of you are in a hotel room, you cannot say, “Let’s go out to your backyard.” Finally, you have to be prepared for any call. If the client says, “Tell me an erotic tale,” you have to have one already ready.
The Ideal Client
There are 3 main groups of clients:
- The Pervert (fetishes, strap-ons, BDSM, taboos: bestiality, incest, underage sex)
- The Pornographer (3-ways, complex sexual positions, dirty/nasty talk, rough sex)
- The Professional (doctors, lawyers, executives, straight sex, girlfriend experience)
The majority of clients fall into the first 2 categories: 40% for each category. Around 20% of clients fall under the last category. Of course, I prefer to work with the Professional. However, I will service the Pornographer. If I get the Pervert on the line, I refer him to another PSO, or I will disconnect the call if he wants to discuss a taboo subject, which callers are not supposed to do. However, during every shift, there is always a client who wants to play out a taboo fantasy. (I will spare you the disturbing details.)
Since I work from 4am to 8am ET daily, I tend to get Perverts and Pornographers calling from the west coast who have just gotten off of work or who cannot sleep, and the Professionals from the east coast who are just waking up and getting ready for work. Therefore, clients are either calling me to service them to a pleasurable sleep or a pleasurable awakening.
Perverts and Pornographers tend to hold short calls, less than 10 minutes on average. On the other hand, I have spoken to Professionals for 55 minutes per call discussing everything from the economy, recession, and Ponzi schemes to the eco-system, Russia, and politics. Who knew that PSOs had to stay on top of current events? As you may have already figured out, not every call is about sex. Some people are just calling to talk because they are lonely, like talking to an interesting woman, or are simply playing out a no-sex fantasy. The best client is a repeat client who makes it a routine to call you every morning. Beware of clients who want to give you their phone number so that you can continue the conversation offline. That is a big no-no!
How Much Money You’ll Make As a PSO
Every company has a different pay scale. On average, you should be able to make 25 cents per minute/$15 per hour of live talk time, which means the actual time that you are talking to clients. (When you are not talking to clients, you are not getting paid.) However, if you work from 10pm to 6am, some companies will pay you more per minute. Another way to make more per minute is to work at least 30 hours a week for an additional few cents per minute.
For example, if you worked from 10pm to 3am everyday, you could make over 30 cents per minute/$18+ an hour, on average. If you talked live to your clients for a total of 200 minutes of the 5-hour shift, you would make $60+ for that shift. That is not a lot of money, but keep in mind that I multi-task while I am waiting for calls. I blog, read a book, fold clothes, answer emails, watch a movie, etc. That $60+ a day equals $1,800+ monthly, which is not bad for just talking on the phone while being productive doing other things.
How My First Day Went
I didn’t know what to expect. My first client, John (not real name), wanted me to greet him at my “imaginary” house door and then take it from there. During my 4-hour shift, I took 24 calls from men and a woman. The shortest call lasted 1 minute and the longest lasted 18 minutes. I talked a total of 90 minutes to callers on my first day.
Benefits of Being a “Phone Actress”
- Job security. The sex industry really doesn’t experience a recession. As long as there are men (and a few women) on the planet, I will have a job.
- Flexible hours. Some companies allow you to work as little as 10 hours a week, and you can log on at will. At the other end, some companies require you to work fulltime with a set schedule.
- You are a 1099 employee, so you are your own boss in a lot of ways.
- You get to meet a lot of interesting people.
- You can work in your PJs.
- You learn a lot of new sexual concepts. I had no clue that Icing is a fetish where the man wants to be a Sugar Daddy. The first time a client mentioned Icing, I thought he wanted me to take a piece of ice and tease him with it.
- It gives you pointers to use in your own sex life to keep it hot, if you have one.
- You work from home.
- You have the opportunity to work 24/7 since phone sex companies never close.

In Summary
When I received my graduate degree years ago, I thought of job opportunities such as teaching college, writing mysteries, hosting parties, personal training, and blogging. Even though I am doing all of those things, I like being a PSO because I never have to take a call that I don’t want to take, and I can multi-task while working. Also, this job has given me some unique insight as I am putting the finishing touches on a cozy mystery I have written, which has the amateur sleuth moonlighting as a Phone Actress.

Thanks for this J, I needed a laugh this morning.
I can see another spin off website starting “BudgetsAfterDark”
Hilarious!
This post was informative. I have never thought of this profession as a side hustle. Kudos to the writer for taking on this job. It seems like a great way to make some cash.
What proportion of people would you say call just to chat? I read that escorts in Nevada have lots of “chat-only” encounters because a lot of people just want to talk.
How did you get the idea to apply? Was it just, “There are no bar-tending jobs, how about becoming a phone actress?”.
Thanks for the fascinating piece!
I once had an employee that was raised in the sex business. Her dad owns adult video stores and her mom was a PSO. Once she told me that she was 12 or 13 before she spent the night a a friends house and realized that not everyone’s parents had a credit card machine next to their beds….LOL
Matt, that is a catchy title!
Dana, being a PSO is a great way for me to make cash while completing other duties simultaneously. When my friends call me, I never just stop, sit down, and talk to them. I am always multi-tasking. I do the same with my callers.
PKamp3, I would say that 10% want to “just chat.” I had a 54-year male caller who talked with me for 55 minutes (maximum time limit per call, but caller can hang up and call right back). The profile for callers who want to just chat is a white male over 50. The oldest client I ever had was 70. We also talked for 55 minutes. I remember reading a book about a high end escort. She said the #1 thing her clients and her colleagues’ clients looked for was companionship. During a one-hour session, they would have sex for only 10 minutes; the other 50 minutes would be devoted to him just talking to her.
PKamp3, 10% of callers call for no-sex chatting. Also, I would say that another 10% of callers chat the majority of the call, while sex is just secondary. I learned quickly that part of my job is to act like a therapist who has excellent listening skills because callers want you to just listen to their problems. Most have no one to talk to or they are ashamed to talk to others about certain issues.
PKamp3, I made the majority of my income from teaching college. Even though I taught college part time, I was making a full time salary from it. However, once the recession started, combined with more and more people not seeing value in a college degree, I went from teaching 8 classes at a time in 2009 to just 1 to 3 right now. Therefore, I had to come up with replacement income. I remember a few years ago, a publisher had sent me a book about the escort industry to review for my blog. The book gave non-escort women advice on how to spice up their sex lives. One tip was to engage in phone sex with their lover. She also noted how people do that for a living from home. When I started brainstorming about jobs that I could do from home or within walking distance of my home (I have no car), I remembered what the book had said. I also considered becoming an online Web researcher, which is doing research for companies from your home.
Man, I should TOTALLY do this! Shoot, I used to for free with my then husband when he was in the Marine Corps and deployed!
I love the title “phone actress”. That alone made this post worth reading.
Wow, what an awesome article! Great insight to a discreet line of work lol, I had no idea
After reading this, I asked one of my coworkers if she would ever consider doing this part time. Her response? “I was for two months, made good money.” Their office was right down the hall from her other job, she after she got of work she’d put in a few hours there. Mind blown.
Nicole, you are a pro at it! :-) You already have experience. Go for it! Also, we have something in common because I do service enlisted men and officers.
Sandy, the part that makes me an “actress” is I have to be able to quickly improvise. Once that phone rings and the caller wants me to act like a dominatrix, even though I just got off of the phone acting like a very shy insurance agent, I have to quickly go into Mistress Sandy mode and tell him to “Bow before your Goddess.”
Crystal, most people have no idea about the ins and outs of the business. I didn’t before I started. The only true downside to this business is when the business executive calls and wants you to act like his biologically little girl who is still in grade school. I get too many of those types of calls. Of course, I disconnect and flag the call.
What happens if you have a cold? Can’t imagine a nasally voice and nose blowing would be a turn on. :)
Husband has a co-worker that is a Dominatrix, she makes tons of money, she works in IT for the health insurance. Not sure if her payments are “under the whip” so to speak LOL.
She has quite the wig collection that she wears to the office. If I didn’t have a job with the police dept that makes you list all extra jobs and they research them! I would do it.
She doesn’t have sex with her clients, just whips them etc…and listens to them too. She does outcalls only so she has a security guy (her boyfriend ) go with her. Some enterprising person could do a webinar “How To Make Extra Money in the Sex Industry.” and charge for it, anyone anyone?? LOL
I once “interviewed” for a company and sat in as a few other PSO worked. It was an major learning experience but also really odd since they were all walking around the same room (there were some small, closet like places to go for more privacy). I think doing it at home would be much easier.
Not sure I could do it though.
Steve, this recession is causing a lot of people to do things that they wouldn’t normally think about doing. As Nicole pointed out, women are already unpaid phone sex operators. Therefore, it is easier for them to take that leap to the paid world. There are more people doing this job than you think. T It is just hard to go to an office job and say, “Hey guys, guess what I do as a side hustle once I get off of work?” There are male PSO’s for gay men, too.
Gina, I am a Phone Dominatrix/Mistress/Goddess, too. My 3 specialties are: Mind Control, Tie, Tease & Tickle, and Financial. With the latter, subjects beg to buy me expensive gifts and pay my bills because that is their way of serving me. I had a caller once who was going giving me his credit card number for me to buy some high heeled shoes. I had to command him to stop once he started reading off the number. I know a lot of you are thinking, “It was a fake credit card number.” To the contrary. Men involved in BDSM (bondage/discipline/sadomasochism) take their servitude role seriously because it is a lifestyle for them, not just an act. Trust me, he is not an isolated case.
Jessica, of course, it is not for everyone. However, I am looking at your picture, and I can tell that there is a PSO inside of you ready to call out :-). You just have to find an area to specialize in. For instance, you could be Jessica, The Baby-making Princess. Yes, a caller called me once to role-play that we were making a baby. I always wondered if he was sterile and by role-playing making a baby, that somehow made him feel better. Or, you could be Jessica, The Moaning Princess. A caller once wanted me to just moan, no sex talk, just moan.
I love this. I would absolutely consider doing something like this. That’s for telling me to check out this side hustle today J. It would have never crossed my mind! We’re going to be down to 1 income next year, so this would be a great way to earn some extra cash. My question for T. Thema Martin is…have you ever dealt with calls that have made you very uncomfortable? How do you handle that? Thanks!
Angella, that is an excellent question. You will receive calls from men who want to discuss taboo subjects: rape, torture, bestiality, incest, murder, and underage sex. Once a client says any of those 6 words, I immediately disconnect the call and hit a special code that alarms my employer that a caller discussed a taboo subject. From there, I am not sure what happens because I am off to the next caller.
Whether a man works on Wall Street, No Street or Main Street, he still has the potential to ask you to role play a taboo subject. One trick that a man will use is to say, “Angella, let’s role play playing the game Twister and then we get sexual since we are twisted up together.” That sounds like an innocent request, right? However, at the end of the 10-minute session, he would say, “Thank you, (biological) Mommy.” At that point, you can still disconnect the call and report him. However, he already tricked you into role playing a mother-son scenario with him. The good news is 99% of men who are into taboo subjects will tell you upfront, as opposed to tricking you.
Keep in mind that it is just not the taboo calls that are disturbing or uncomfortable. Remember, you don’t have to take any call that you are uncomfortable with. When a man calls and says that he wants me to strap on ‘a device’ and do a, b, an c to him, I simply say, “Caller, what you are requesting is not taboo; it is just not my specialty. I am a different type of Dominatrix. However, there are women online who would love to take your call.” The caller then goes back into que. However, he is grateful that I denied him because no caller wants to role play with a woman who is not into what he wants her to do, especially if he is paying $1 or $2 a minute to talk to you.
Eeewww… hahaha.. It’s all good. I wonder how long people last at this kind of job. Does a PSO keep working for years and years? It sounds like a good side job. How much do you really make in a 4 hours shift? It sounds like maybe $40 or so…
Wow awesome sex-positive attitude everyone! It’s great that you feel so comfortable doing this kind of work – and that you have so much control over the clientele and the hours. I don’t think that is true in most sex work. Does anyone in your real life know about your work and how have they reacted? Has doing this made you feel any different about those who work in the sex industry?
I am really confused…who the hell would pay for phone sex in the day of free porn on the internet? Webcams has to have killed this business
Retire by 40, I am back online. I had to take some international phone sex calls from London. I work that segment, too. I don’t know what the turnover rate is. I do know the person who hired me is a married woman who has been doing it for 6 years. It is a good side job. Realistically, I have seen companies pay $100 for a 4-hour shift. However, I make on average, like you said, like $40 (for middle of the night shift), unless I work the evening shift, which would equal $60. However, you have to keep 2 things in mind, I decline 80% of my calls because I really try to concentrate on the Professional calls and I work the late night/early morning shift that attracts mostly Pornographers and Perverts. Now, when I jump on the after work/5pm shift (when the company needs help), that is when I can accept 80% of the calls because that is the Professional crowd, so I could make $60 during that shift. Also, the weekends are the busiest time when people call.
Once again, your income is going to based on 2 factors: what kind of calls are you willing to take and which shift you work. If you are willing to take almost any type of call without being selective, then you are going to make more regardless of which shift you work. Also, if you are online during a good shift, such as when men are getting off of work or if they aren’t many PSOs online, then you will receive more calls, which means more money.
Change On A Budget, I don’t hide what I do, so my friends and family know. They just laugh about it. I am sure my neighbors know since I am sure that they hear me taking calls. :-) You make a good point, even though I am a sex worker, it is different from forced prostitution and white slavery. Therefore, that is why I have freedom of when I work and who I choose to talk to. My attitude about the voluntary sex industry has not changed because I have always felt that prostitution should be legal. The only true physical difference between me and international high end escorts is they are actually in the same room with the client and I am not, but yet what I do is legal and what they do is not.
Change On A Budget, I have a positive attitude about s*x because I used to be a S*x Educator. I worked the S*x Hotline where the majority of calls involved straight men calling to say that they had s*x with another man and they were worried about being infected with something and how could they avoid having s*x with their wives/girlfriends until their test results were returned or calls where gay men called in stating that they had s*x with straight men who they felt purposely removed the condom during the act. Therefore, being a PSO is not much of a stretch for me because I have heard about just everything concerning s*x. I would say at least 25% of all my current callers are either bi-s*xual or straight but they just want to involve a man in the role playing even though they are straight…um…ok
Evan, millions of men would and do. I promise you, there is not a shortage of callers…never has been…never will be. I take calls from American men and British men (specifically from London). The only difference is the latter show more manners and are less explicit. However, the desired outcome is still the same. Webcams have only changed the business, not killed the business. What you have to understand Evan is most men don’t consider women in porn or a Webcam to be “real’ women as in a real woman who lives next door to them or works with them in corporate America. As my callers explain to me, “You are more real.” In other words, as Steve put it in post #11, he had no clue that his co-worker was a PSO. However, had she been a porn star or Webcam star, there would have been too much of a risk of someone recognizing her. My callers cannot recognize me since they only hear my voice. Look at it this way, it is easier to pick out a stripper, porn star, and streetwalker than it is a PSO and high end escort. Now with that being said, I am in no way putting down the first set of women or making a judgment call. What I am saying is it is easier for PSOs and high end escorts to blend in with society. I could be sitting in a room full of my clients, and not one of them would recognize me.
Remember what I said in an earlier post, when men call a high end escort, the majority are looking for companionship and s*x secondary. The high end escort is going to be sophisticated, intelligent, cultured, and educated like them, which is why they sometimes travel to places together. I am no different. When the Professional crowd calls me, they feel a commonality with me. They feel like they could actually come knock on my door and take me on a date, to a company function, to a play, or to a family event. They are not, for the most part, going to say the same about a porn star, Webcam star or streewalker. Once again, there is no judgment here. I am just explaining the mindset of my clients as explained to me by them because I ask them why did they choose my profile over other girls since they have to pay more for me and my other premium colleagues than for regular PSOs.
Sounds gross. Ugh.
J$: What are you wearing right now?
Oh Thelma, I have so many questions for you!
I seriously seriously considered doing this last year, but had no idea where to go for more information. The places that come up during a search wanted me to pay to talk with other “actresses” even if I was considering working for the company.
My first question is: How necessary is it to have a corded landline? I can understand why cordless and cell phones are discouraged, but I live in a roommate situation now where the landline is the landlady’s family phone!
2: What kind of peer support is available? Is there an internet group where you and other PSO discuss how to handle certain scenarios or provide sample scripts to use with callers?
3: You mentioned someone having a cc machine by their bed phone: Do you take the clients information or does the service do it for you before the caller is connected to you?
I may seriously start doing this!
Jerri Lyn,, I am so glad to see that so many woman are interested in becoming a PSO. I believe more women are interested but they are reluctant to say so. That’s totally fine, too. The point of this article was to at least give women who are interested a starting place. You can call me The PSO Expert.
I cannot speak for all PSO companies, but I can tell you that all of the companies that I have come across such as LipService.net and ChatRecruit.com require a plain landline with NO features on it. Some companies run a check on your phone to verify that it is a landline. When you apply for jobs, it should state whether a cell phone is an option.
When I originally applied to 10 companies, I saw where some did give their PSOs scripts and offered online classes. Honestly, Jerri Lyn,, I have never had a class or a script, and that is a good thing. Why? Because callers don’t want to feel like you are reading from a script. They want you to use your imagination. Just go with the flow just like how you would with a spouse/lover/boyfriend.
The Professional crowd wants the “girlfriend experience.” Therefore, I talk to them the same way I would talk to a boyfriend/lover/husband. Nicole in post #11 said she did phone sex with her husband when he was deployed. You would basically do the same thing. For instance, I spoke to a lawyer from London yesterday. We talked about our professions and how our day went, and then we transitioned into “What are you wearing?” Once again, it’s the “girlfriend experience.” If you want to deal with the Professional crowd, the best time to be on the phones is 6am – 9am and 5pm – 8pm…basically during rush hour coming and going.
When you receive a call from a Pervert or a Pornographer, the first thing out of their mouths is, “What they are doing s*xually and what they want you to do s*xually.” That is why I don’t like taking those calls because they are not looking for anything that resembles the ‘girlfriend experience.” If you want to deal with that crowd, the best time to be on the phones is Midnight to 6am, and be ready for some very, very, very, very, very explicit material from them.
Darla mentioned a cc machine. You take NO financial information from the clients. Before they connect with you, they have already input their cc info. If they paid for 10 minutes, then at the end of 10 minutes, the call will automatically drop.
You can locate PSO positions on a job board such as SexyJobs.com. You can also chat with other PSOs at PhoneSex.yuku.com. However, I only went there to find out other information from other PSOs. A lot of the information on that board is old; therefore, I am not sure if the board is really active.
I would like to try it out how do I get started
Jerri Lyn, post #29 is for you. I mistakenly addressed it to Donna. Feel free to ask any additional questions.
I just about died reading this post. Thanks for the Friday chuckle.
Edward, anytime you have a cold, mouth problems, nasal problems, etc., you would just take off those days and make up your time later. However, if you are catering to clients who want a she-man, which a lot of them want, then you are good to go.
Loved the article.
I currently work as a PSO. This is my second time undertaking this position; the first time I did it was in the late 90s and in an office environment. It helped me finance my graduate degree in counselling. Ironically enough, I use my counselling skills with the majority of my customers, so that is an added bonus for me.
I took it up again recently because I already work from home on other ventures, but I wanted to boost up my income, and this integrates extremely well with my other ventures.
Being a good PSO is not about panting erratically into your phone set (lol), it is about being a great listener, improviser, having a positive attitude to different sexual practices and being empathetic to your customer needs. Once you have this mindset then you can go really far:) I’ve made some great money out of being a PSO, and fortunately, I have a very supportive husband. I think he loves it because it definitely has put a kick back into our sex life!
A great board that I belong to, which is very active is http://psosupport.com/ I have picked up a lot of tips and advice on this forum.
Thanks so much for spilling the secrets, T. Thema Martin! It was a VERY pleasurable break for me ;) If I were smooth enough, I’d try calling up and getting you just to hear you in action! Haha… And SO FUNNY you were responding to comments while on and off the phone!! Talking abou Sex! I love it! :)
@Matt – Hah! We should totally do a BudgetsAfterDark ;)
@Darla – Wowwww! That’s kinda like when I realized that not every family moves every 2 years (My dad was in the military) though not nearly as scandalous, haha…
@Nicole – Hah! Lucky husband ;)
@Steve – WHAT??? That is crazy? What are the odds? Haha…
@Gina – That reminds me of the show my wife and I watch a lot – The Secret Diary of a Call Girl, it’s pretty interesting!
@Jessica, The Debt Princess – Really?? You HAVE to tell me more the next time we see each other at a conference ;)
@Angella – Anytime! I’m glad you got a lot out of this :) It’s def. different!
@Evan – It’s still not as “human” I wouldn’t think?
@Donna Freedman – A skeleton shirt and a hoodie. Do I turn you on?? (It’s Halloween, haha…)
@kokotai – Cool! I wonder what my wife would say if I went into the PSO Biz?? :)
****T. Thema Martin — I have a question for you now — Are there many MALES in the industry? Like, if I wanted to try it out for a while, would I have much competition? And secondly, would that mean I’d be talking to women or other dudes? Cuz that would make a huge difference to me ;) Not that the wife would allow it anyways, haha…
J, the only males I have seen are on gay sites. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t male PSOs for women. I guess if a woman wanted to speak to a man, she could call a gay phone sex company because a lot of men who work in the gay sex business are bisexual or straight but just like getting paid by gay companies since they pay more. That is no different than when the woman called me for a session even though my companies are for men calling for women. Also, you can do 3-way calls where a man can call and be online with 2 women at once like a 3-way in real life.
Kokotai, I am so glad that you gave your input. Jeri Lyn, #29, wanted to know about a peer group, so I am glad that stated the board that you visit. Everyone, I just gave my take on being a Phone Actress, but the phone sex world is way bigger that what I have described. Some people don’t work for companies, instead they are independent phone sex operators. They make way more than I do to the tune of $120 to $180 hourly because they are receiving the entire amount a caller pays, whereas I only get a portion.
Good to know! Thanks T. Thema :)
The fact that you are so open about it is AWESOME to me! I have a few point/questions that I would love feedback from you on..
A little background on me:
I’m a current college student. I am employed (retail, I am also thinking of picking up a job as a server because I need the income). I’m managing with my current job, but with rent and other bills, it’s kind of difficult, even though I’m not bad at budgeting. I’ve been seriously considering becoming a PSO or a Text Chat Operator, mainly because it seems like a fun way to make extra money, but also because I am a natural conversationalist and thought that hearing different clients speak on various topics, (sexually and not), would broaden my horizons (again, both sexually and otherwise) and help me to be open minded.
I’ve done a lot of research, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t want to do anything that involves being on camera or “trolling”, even though those types seem to make th emost money.
Again with my rexearch, I’ve found that many of these companies are scams. I know that many sites allow you to work from home, but with any job, you will have to provide personal information (SSN DL numbers, etc). How do you know which companies are legitimate? When is it safe to provide this information? Do you have any experience in th etext chat industry?
My other question was: How do you go about tax information? If one becomes a PSO, will they end up owimg to the government? How much of total income made be put aside for taxes?
Victoria, you may want to check out Universal Talk http://www.chatrecruit.com/. They are UK based, so 99% of your callers will be from the UK, and they are way more reserved than US callers. I think you have to work at least 10 hours weekly with them, but there is no set schedule. You log on at will. The good thing about them is you don’t have to just sit by the phone. Once you log in, you can be doing chores, schoolwork, surfing the net, etc, until the phone rings. You must have a landline with no features on it. You will have to provide your personal information as part of the application.
You know a company is legit pretty much by checking with other PSOs and PSO message boards such as http://psosupport.com/ or http://phonesex.yuku.com/. You may want to also consider bartending. If you find the right club or bar to work at, you can make some good extra money. I bartend at socials that I give, but I was never able to find a job at it even though I went to bartending school, write about spirits, and bartend at socials.
I don’t have experience text chating. However, you will make the most money by being an Independent PSO, who easily make $180 hourly and upwards. I have no problem answering any other questions you may have.
Victoria you will be a contract employee so no taxes are taken out. Right now, I just put half of it aside. When you go to the PSO message boards, ask to see what other PSOs are doing.
Thanks so much!
How do you know when it’s safe to provide personal information? .
I did the webcam model thing for awhile- it sounds a lot like a PSO in terms of what kind of clients you deal with. You get paid more per minute- the company I worked for paid $3/minute plus an extra .50 cents for each additional person spying in on the session. The downsides are you can’t be multitasking since they are watching you, and you typically have to actually perform sex acts for the camera, and it is very common for them to want you to view their camera as well. You can block certain states from seeing your cam, but by being on camera you do sort of lose some of the anonymity that makes being a PSO more appealing.
If you are looking for a work at home job and are comfortable with the idea, being a webcam model can be very lucrative and even kind of fun. I liked working with MyFreeCams (best $ potential, but to really capitalize you have to know what you’re doing and work their system, build a fan base) and Streamate (good starter company- you set your price, log in and go)
Nice!! Yeah it seems that being on video would be a lot MORE money than on the phone, but def. not as good for staying anonymous or doing 2 things at once (no pun intended). Thanks for sharing your experience though! This is all super fascinating to me ;) And probably hundreds of others too…
Happy Holidays!
Ok so i have been thinking about this for over a year now and had some concerns about this type of job. even though i have phone sex with my boyfriend like every night because he is deployed right now. i love doing it with him and i think it would be fun to learn new things. do you ever actually “play” when you take some calls? is there any info you can give me about the independent phone sex operators. how that works, do i need experience first, etc. thank you so much to everyone… i am totally going to do this now… cant wait! :)
WOW! I cannot believe that this topic is still getting hits 2 months later. However, I have no problem answering questions even if it is 2 years later. Missy, Niteflirt http://www.niteflirt.com/ is a place to try for becoming an independent. Also, make sure you frequent the PSO support boards (see comment #41). You already have experience by having phone sex with your deployed boyfriend. “The only difference is you will now be taking calls from men who want you to role play as their boss, next door neighbor, friend’s mother, dominatrix, etc. The message boards are your best bet for networking with women who are already independents to get info.
I don’t “play” while doing it because unlike “playing” with your actual lover, you really have to be focused on the caller and what they are requesting. For example, when a caller calls for femininzation from a dominatrix, I write down what he likes to wear, how he wants to be treated, what he wants to be called, what is the setting, etc. Therefore, once the role play starts, I am very focused on what the caller’s name is, what color stockings and lipstick he wants me to make him put on, how I am going to make him get into position, etc. If you make mistakes while playing with your real-life lover, it is no big deal. However, when you make a mistake with a caller, they can leave a comment online saying how horrible you were. Therefore, I am ALWAYS focused on the caller, not myself.
Missy, also you need a niche. Yours could be something like, “I Get Soldiers Hot and Bothered,” “I Get Marines to Salute Their Real Gun,” “I Rock The Boat of Sailors,” or whatever. You want to create a persona so that when a man (or woman) calls, they are requesting “that girl who caters to the needs of soldiers.” That will make them feel special because they will feel like you understand them. Plus, they may say some military terms that you may understand. For example, they may say, “Let’s role play that we are in the commissary” or whatever. Then, of course, they will spread the word about you. My other suggestion is to read up on fetishes because there are a million of them out there. I never knew that people had a smoking and drinking fetish. Therefore, a caller will call and want you to pretend as though you are drunk and smoking in a bar, drunk and pulled over by the police, etc.
Hahahaha OMG I love you guys. Branding at its finest! :)
thank you for all your help, T! so when the guys call how do you know who it is? when you pick up the phone are they just there on the line? or is there like an operator to tell you who it is? just wondering cuz i like the idea of writing all the details down and keeping like a book/catalog or something.
I’m so glad I found this site and that you are answering questions! I am seriously giving this some consideration as we need some income right now. How spontaneous do you have to be with thinking up stories? That is what I am concerned about. And do the men from other countries prefer talking to American women?
You are getting hits today because the PSO industry was a topic on the View today. I am in desperate need of a job and this may be the ticket for me at this time. Thank you so much for the very imformative blog and the links for more information. I would never have thought of something like this but now I am very interested.
Missy, it depends on which company you work for. Not all companies are set up the same. For instance XYZ Company may be set up where George goes to XYZ’s website. He scrolls through all of the girls and picks Missy. Then he calls the main number and put in your extension. The phone system automatically routes the call to you. Your phone rings. You say, “Hi, I am Missy.” You don’t know if it is George Clooney on the line or George The Carpenter. He is either going to say, “Hi, I’m George.” or “I’m h*rny; you know what to do.” Therefore, you have to be ready for a call with foreplay or a call which goes directly into s*x once you answer. Some calls are 3-way calls where another PSO is on the line with you and the client. Other companies operate differently where a caller leaves you a voicemail telling you what he wants such as you have to be his submissive and do whatever he tells you to do. Then if you agree to the role-playing, you hit * or # to accept his call.
When I get a call, I take out my log and I write down his name (if he tells me) and the time the call starts and ends. You are paid by how many minutes you have taken calls. You may take a 5-minute call or a 50-minute call. I write down his physical description, what he is requesting, and what he likes. However, some callers give no information and just want s*x only with no small talk.
@Maria, if you learn nothing else from all of this, know this: MEN ONLY PREFER ONE KIND OF WOMAN: THE KIND THEY DON’T HAVE AT HOME. In other words, men aren’t going to pay for what they can get at home because they could simply just rollover and say, “Honey, talk dirty to me” for free. Forget about what is said in Cosmo and Harper’s Bazaar or on The View and Sex and the City. Men like a variety of women. If they have a blonde at home, they are going to want to talk to a redhead. If the men are white, they are going to want to talk to a black, Hispanic or Asian woman. If a man has a reserved woman at home, he is going to want to talk to a dominatrix. You will never receive a call saying, “Act just like my wife or girlfriend.” They are calling you because they don’t have you at home. Once again, MEN ONLY PREFER ONE KIND OF WOMAN: THE KIND THEY DON’T HAVE AT HOME.
You have to be VERY spontaneous because you don’t know what the caller may be calling about. However, don’t worry about it. If you are not sure what to do, always have a fallback line such as “This is all about you. Tell me what to do.” or whatever. Some callers are not sure what they want since they may be a first time caller or they see you as the expert and expect you to control the situation. In your s*x tool chest, have a variety of stories, scenarios, role plays, etc. already made up.
@LaBella make sure to watch Good Morning America on Monday because they are going to run a segment about it. If you decide to do it, just be real. Everything I tell a caller about me is real except for my name. I am real but safe. I tell them I teach college but not where. I tell them that I have no hips instead of saying that I am shaped like Jessica Rabbit. I tell them I am in my 40s instead of 20s or 30s. Be real because no man wants to be treated like a trick. Men are calling to speak to real women, not fake women reading from a script. I read the other day that Men’s Health thinks that Jennifer Aniston is the Sexiest Woman of All Time. Do I agree? No, however, I do agree with what they find s*xy about a woman – a woman who is unmistakably real:
“Funny is s*xy, and Jennifer Aniston is funny. Her down-to-earth persona makes her seem attainable. She rarely plays the airhead, and she seldom overplays a role: she’s funny in a quiet, refreshingly human way. Other s*x symbols drift toward one-dimensionality, becoming flat icons in the process, but throughout her career Aniston has remained s*xy, funny, and unmistakably real. For that reason, she is our all-time s*xiest woman.” ~ Men’s Health, December 2011.
I have been giving phone sex to a handsome Italian gut since we met 11 years ago…he calls from Venice for his fix. Since I have been giving it away for free for years perhaps it is time to make a bit of cash…I am in my late forties but have a young voice which the men in Porttugal loved!
@Canjo, yes, use your experience to make money. Since you are in your late 40s, you can play it both ways. You can use your young-sounding voice to attract OLDER men who want a young co-ed and you can use an older-sounding voice to attract the 20-somethings, who love older women. They are going to want you to be the mother of their best friend who they have a crush on. My profile says 40s so I get a lot of the under 30 crowd and the 50 -70 crowd. Once again MEN ONLY PREFER ONE KIND OF WOMAN: THE KIND THEY DON’T HAVE AT HOME.
Here’s the link to the Good Morning America show about PSOs http://gma.yahoo.com/video/parenting-26594265/mom-s-operate-phone-sex-lines-27637232.html
Also, here’s the site that will send you names of legitimate PSO companies seeking phone actresses http://www.ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1gzvFjzd4
i would love 2 be a pso it sounds fun and exciting!!!!!
This sounds like something that would be awesome to help supplement my college funding- but I have one worry- I dislike my voice. I’m a sociable person, sexually open about such things, and imaginative/good on my feet (I worked retail for a while, so listening to people is instinct at this point).
However, I have a deep voice for a woman and tend to talk more like a guy (as far as wording / style) than a sex kitten (having grown up hanging out with more fellows than females). Is there something in this area that would work for me? I just doubt my capability to get a hiring person’s attention and would like to hear your opinion on this (before I bring it up to my boyfriend, whom I’m unsure of standing on this subject).
Thanks for the article, this was really informative & well written! :)
@Karli, it is fun and exciting, especially if you love talking to different kinds of men.
@C.B., you have already answered your own question. Since you have a boyfriend, that means that somebody likes your voice. What’s rule #1? MEN ONLY PREFER ONE KIND OF WOMAN: THE KIND THEY DON’T HAVE AT HOME. Men who have feminine-sounding wives and girlfriends are going to want that deeper voice because it is something different for them. There are plenty of bis*xual men out there who love she-males. There you go. Brand yourself as having a unis*x name like Rob or Jamie. That way you can go either way with it. Men, especially men who want you to feminize them, will wonder if you are transgender. Tease them and keep them guessing.
Let’s not forget that about being a dominatrix: Mistress Rob or Mistress Jamie. Men would go crazy when you tell them, “Shut up,” with that deep voice. When you are looking for a job, tell the people up front that you have a strong voice instead of maybe a sex kitten voice. If they tell you they are not sure how you would fit in, then tell them what I just told you about the crowd you would cater to.
@C.B., I am so glad that the article was useful. If you haven’t signed up for this site http://phonesexsecrets.blogspot.com/2011/12/thoughts-after-good-morning-america.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PhoneSexSecrets+%28Phone+Sex+Secrets%29&utm_content=Yahoo!+Mail, then do because it is a must-read site. The lady who runs the site was on Good Morning America today, and she has made $1,000 A DAY by being a phone s*x operator.
Thanks for mentioning — and linking to — my blog, Phone Sex Secrets :)
I’d like to clarify that I specialize in helping independent phone sex operators, not those employed by a company. That’s why I can make more money in one day — but I also do more work marketing my phone sex characters. It really depends on how you like to work, how much control you want/need over your career.
Best of luck to all of you!
Here’s a chance to be on TV: If you are a PSO MOM living east of the Mississippi, there is a possible TV opportunity for you to be interviewed. Contact me at info@savionaire.com ASAP because this opportunity won’t last long. On the subject line, please put “PSO MOM Opportunity.” Please note that you MUST be a MOM, and preferably living in the eastern half of the US.
If you are a PSO with at least with a bachelor’s degree or hold an equivalent professional position such as running your own company, corporate management, IT pro, etc, then contact me at info@savionaire.com. On the subject line, please put “PSO Professional Opportunity.” Thanks.
I am a veteran PSO and Phone Sex Business Owner. I am a stay at home Mom. I do all types of calls except pedophila.
There is a dark side to this business and it does not include the callers.
Be careful who you work for. There are disreputable PS Business owners who do not pay their operators on time, bounce checks, and take advantage that “most” PSO’s will not persue legal action to collect their money do to fear of losing their anonymity.
As a business owner, it has recently gotten worse finding and hiring dependable operators. Some of the “bad” companies out there are having thier operators apply at other companies to steal proprietary information, client lists… etc
I pay my operators $1.00 – $1.30 per MINUTE of talk time. Yes, that comes out to $60 – $78 per hour.
I have never done 24 calls in one day, ever. But I have had $1,500.00 days. A good return caller who likes to chat, is lonely, can spend hours on the phone.
There are days when you don’t get ANY calls.
I don’t think an operators voice is as important as her attitude and personality.
OLDER operators make more than young operators in my experience.
I don’t ever think of my callers as perverts. Sexuality is healthy. As long as there are no victims, it’s all good. I categorize my clients as either “kinky” or “straight/vanilla”.
Well, I COULD write a book about this subject, lol, but I have to get back to work.
Hello, Ive been trying to become a phone sex operator but I dodnt know what to do or where to go. I only have a cell phone I desperatley need cash right away. Im one semester away from graduating but I dont have enough money to continue going to school. i’m struggling as it is can someone help me out please with finding PSO employment.
Found all this information on this website very useful, I would love to do this! I also own my own adult in home toy party company and love doing it! People come to me all the time and ask questions about sex, toys, etc. I am very open minded and can talk about sex easily. Just need to find the right company to become a PSO, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Shelley and Jen, try http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing a reputable companies and http://www.chatrecruit.com/main. However, Shelley, it may be difficult to find a reputable company that allows you to work on a cell phone.
thanks so much for the info. I just contacted a few companies so I hope to hear back from someone. I have always thought about doing this but didnt know where to start. Your website was very informative. I am keeping my fingers crossed!!!! Thanks again
I have been a PSO for over 12 yrs now. This article was interesting but not very factual. I would not jump on this profession just by what was written here,
ymanuelle, if you are so much more experienced then thelma, then why don’t you share your experiences with everyone here.
thanks for all of the info. thelma.
Sorry but I cannot relay 12 years of job experience on a forum. I am just saying to do your homework and really research all the options before just jumping in. This job is not for everyone.
I’m not surprised that stay at home moms have turned to starting their own phone sex business. It’s quite profitable. Great article, thanks for all the info!
What about security through a company?
How exactly do they use your phone and keep your number private?
Why can’t you use a cell phone?
Also, there seems to be a lot of transaction, which worries me (I still am not completely comfortable about online banking and PayPal), but is PayPal primarily used?
What about identification, how can you be sure of a company’s credibility?
June, are you talking about being an Independent PSO? In a lot of ways, an IPSO is no different than a PSO who works for a company. An IPSO usually has callers to call a 800 number that is routed to her phone line. Therefore, the caller only has a 800 number to call. It is no different than when you call a call center and get a customer service rep who works from home. You have no idea what her phone number is.
Most companies don’t want their agents to use cell phones because calls are easier to drop on a cell phone than landline. However, an IPSO can do what she wants to do.
Welcome to the 21st century! Online banking and PayPal are the standard. That is why it is best to go with reputable companies such as the ones list here http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK and http://www.chatrecruit.com/main.
It’s been fascinating to me to watch and participate in these conversations about being a phone sex operator all over the web since the GMA segment aired.
Some of the comments have been negative, which I expected but I was pleasantly surprised to see so many people supportive of a work at home mom pursuing phone sex as an occupation.
Haha, I love your website name – “Textilicious” – that’s awesome ;)
There are other non-caller Dark Sides to this….
Be prepared to lie about what you do. Half of my family can’t stomach it when I say “I need to start work by 8pm tonight, I have an appointment”, and the only friends who’ve stuck around were the male ones. Despite living in so-called socially liberal states, I’ve been blatantly ostracized for this work. So it may seem edgy and cool and lucrative, but most people will change towards you. Some will even treat you like you’re an actual prostitute.
More than a few women will harass you to get them a job where you work because they’ve talked their boyfriend off or people say they have a sexy voice. That’s fine if you do a .25-.30/min old school just-answer-the-phone kind of job. I don’t. Grossing $4-10/hr on average is not “good money” to me. The kind of PSO work that pays 2-4x that requires a lot more off-phone self-promotion, which takes writing/networking skills, acute perceptiveness and discipline (which most of us lack unless we’re on a BDSM call, heh). An entire back-up set of electronics (phone service, headsets, laptops, wifi, etc) keeps you from having any tech downtime, and guys spending $2-3/min to speak to you for more than 3 minutes value reliability, commitment, professionalism – especially in an industry not known for that. And I value not losing $100-300/day because my headset shoots static :)
PS- pedophilia/underage fantasies break the obscenity laws in most if not all states. Yes, companies and operators do it, but it is illegal and could theoretically get you arrested if there’s ever a crackdown.
Very VERY good points “Jane!” Never even thought about how others would handle your job, and it seems like it’s not that easy to fake your way out of over time, even if initially. Man… this whole profession is incredibly interesting. Thanks so much for your input!
My question is this, I’m not currently employed, so I do not have a cell phone, and because I live with roommates, the land line is well for everyone in the household. So do any of the companies ever give you a phone of some sort before hand? or is it always you have to have a phone already to work in this business? I’m really interested in doing this, It’s hard finding a job, and being able to make some money would be nice.
Samm, I am not aware of any reputable companies that give you a phone. Just to be sure, I suggest contacting all the companies listed here ere http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK to see if any will give you a phone. Since your phone line is shared, is it possible for you to tell your roommates that you need designated time to use the phone, for example from 6-10am. Keep in mind that calls ONLY come in once you log into the system to say that you are ready to take calls. Therefore, if you say that you will only take calls from 6-10am, then calls will ONLY come in during that timeframe.
I want to become a PSO. Whats the best company to work for.
Katrina, I cannot tell you which company is the best to work for. Some companies pay more but offer no flexible schedule. On the other hand, some companies have no set schedule, but they pay less. Ideally, you want to get to a point where you work for yourself and keep the majority of the money. In the meantime, you can contact some reputable companies here http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK and http://www.chatrecruit.com/main.
I was a phone sex operator for 5 years. I probably made about $5,000 a week & about half that time I was on vacation. It’s an excellent way to supplement your income so I advise any of you to consider it. Your 3 group stats seem a bit off though. I have worked with several professionals who fall into the fetish category. You’d be surprised how many well educated individuals like to explore a fetish scenario.
I had a client who was a med student from Dayton Ohio. He was a bright one who kept me on the phone for about an hour. He had a submissive side that he wished to explore amongst other things. Anyhow, the conversation revolved around his desire to submit to a woman. The conversation was quite therapeutic for both of us & I actually enjoyed it very much.
I saw scripts mentioned by someone. This is the side that I’m interested in. How might I get involved in writing scripts for PSOs? I’m a freelance writer and always looking for more eggs. If Do you know of any reputable companies that use scripts? Thanks for any info.
Susan, the companies I have worked for, which are reputable, have never provided me with a script. They have stated that scripts make you sound “too scripted,” and men want something that sounds natural. Have you thought about writing erotica in general? I don’t have any leads, but that is just a thought.
I thank you for your insight. I did not read the comments so you may have answered this already but where do i go to apply as a phone actress? I would like to apply asap. Thanks
Also, how do i or how will i know i am ready to work for myself?
Lucky, you can contact some reputable companies here http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK and http://www.chatrecruit.com/main. When you build a clientele, you can work for yourself. The $1M question is how do you build a clientele? Unfortunately, I don’t have an answer for that. I only know that Independent PSO make the most money. Maybe work for a company while you try to build your clientele on the side.
I have a very good friend who has been a telephone actress for 12 years and runs her own website. He recently told me that when she started there were about 10,000 phone sex operators.
Now according to her there are about 1 million. The competition has increased many fold is much tougher today than it was when she started.
Also there was a very large sites that you can use as a collection agent for you and they deduct your costs such as telephone charges, credit card clearing charges and other expenses and give you the balance. However these charges are pretty high. ) Clearing a credit card costs you 25% of the amount. These are offshore clearing businesses because the major banks will not accept adult charges.
So it is getting tougher and tougher to make money.
She also uses nite-flirt which is a very large clearing agency. They advertise, with some extension number for you and perform the necessary services for you. You may set your own rates and they will credit you the net amount.
Good luck to all
I take pride in what I do, and that is makeing my clients happy.
What if u move for place to place and all u have is a cell phone and no time and me money to be getting a landline would it be OK to be using a cell for the calls and what if I don’t want to work for just to make it seem more like a job cause I do live with family and I would like to get out to make feel like a really job
Desire, you are going to have to find a company that allows the use of a cell phone. I don’t know of any, but they should be out there. Independent Operators (they work for themselves) can use a cell phone. Since you live with your family and want to be out, a cell phone is your best choice.
I see a lot of references to international (i.e. UK) calls or sites based in the UK. Do those callers/operators pay international rates?
I really need extra income but my husband would go ballistic if he knew I was doing something like this. How do you keep your private and professional life apart? Also, my time to work would be limited because of that, to about 9 to 12 hours a week. Is that enough time, it would be late afternoons EST.
I’ve researched a few companies because i’m interested in becoming a PSO and it seems most of them want you to give them a credit card when you first start with them. is that common or is that a red flag? i’m not sure why i would need to give them credit card info…seems risky!
@ Iace, I have never had a company to tell me to give them a credit card number. Try contacting some reputable companies here http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK and http://www.chatrecruit.com/main.
@ Erica, I am single, so it is easy for me to keep my lives seperate. International callers are calling a 800 number in the UK, but they are getting reps who live in the States as well as the UK. Therefore, neither the PSO nor caller is paying an international rate. I have seen companies require just 10 hours minimum anytime of the day. You just have to search different companies.
im wanting to know which company is best to work with and how the payment works im getting married next year and with the lack of jobs in my area in england ive no clue where to start looking plz help.terri
Wow you have answered so many questions on that blog. I am going to give it ago as i have just had a baby and money is tight, need some income.
I love the whole role play and i always talk about sex so why not.
Thank you for all your help. Wish me luck. Caroline
One question, is it normal for a company to ask for you to scan your passport, driving licence and birth cetificate?
Caroline
Is there not alot of money to be made by txt chat,I am like a novelist maybe i could look into being an erotica author, but dont know where to look for that.. and can you work for more than 1 company at time.. i mean can you log into 2 companies so you have constant calls. Also how do you declare your earnings or do seem to get lost (lol )
@Terri, try contacting some reputable companies here http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK and http://www.chatrecruit.com/main.
@Caroline, good luck! It is like getting hired at any other job. You have to provide a driver’s license and social security card. If you don’t have that, then just like any other company, you have to provide what is listed on the I-9 Employment Verification Form. However, you don’t use your real name on the job.
@Lennie, I don’t know enough about text chat to know if it pays more than being on the phone. You can work for more than one company at a time, but I have never been logged in at once for both. What would happen if 2 calls came in at one time? You would get fired. Regarding earnings, you will get a W-9 from the companies. If you are an independent operator, then you will have to really pay attention and keep track of earnings.
Hi, i am very interested in becoming an IPSO. I currently live in the UK and have plans on moving to Spain in the near future. Do you know of any good websites on how to become an IPSO and what you would have to do to set it up as your own buisness. Thanks

My god i did not think it would be this hard to get in some where. I live in the Uk and i and i am just hitting brick walls. I company said they would only take me on it i do webcams as well be i just dont want to go down that road. Any help out there people?
Thank you Caroline
@Caroline, keep in mind that since there has been a lot of coverage about being a PSO in the news in the past 4 months, it could be that companies have hired enough girls. The last thing a company wants to do is have too many girls on the roster because that means each girl will take less calls, which could cause them to quit due to low calls. I can see why companies want you to do the Webcam side because many girls don’t want to reveal their faces or get very personal. Therefore, less girls do Webcams, which means there is a need for more girls to do it.
Hi T.Thema,
How do you keep coming up with different stories, or role plays, or ideas to turn them on/sexy? etc . or do the clients guide you, inform you of what they idea/role play is?
What inspires you with your stories? As clearly you have said their is no point having a script, its best to go with the flow..
I guess what im also trying to hone in on, are your repeat clients, do you get many of them, and how do you alternate your scenarios with them?
Susan, I wish I had more repeat customers because it would increase my income. I would say only 15% of people call me back. Everyone else is first time callers. When you branch out on your own, you are going to want repeat customers for sure.
Actually, 90% of my callers already know what they want, so I just build off of what they say. They will say things like “I love to be dominated,” (so I bring out the paddle) or “I love a woman in stockings” (so I talk about what lingerie I love to wear). As in real life, men know what turns them on, so the men calling you are the same way. They will tell you what they like or give you enough hints about it.
You really have to think up scenarios most when it is a new caller (never called a s*x line before) because they don’t usually know what to say.
You recycle stories. Therefore, it is best to come up with a story for each type of fetish. Therefore, you have go-to stories for domination, teacher- college student fantasy, cougar fantasy, cross-dressing, etc. That way if you get 10 calls for a teacher- college student fantasy, you just use the same role play.
@Susan, regarding repeat clients, I will say that it is easier to get them when you have a SET schedule, which is something I don’t have. For example, if you commit to being on the phones from 6-10pm, then callers who like you will know that they can always catch you then. When I had a set schedule, it was easier for people to reach you. Now, because I am working doing other projects, I only jump on the phones whenever I can. Clients love reliability, so if you can make a set schedule, you will do better.
please call me. (321)984-1184. I want to get in to phone operating
Still no luck with compaines in the UK. Its crazy how you would not think many people would want to do it but so many do. Will keep trying though.
Hi,
Thanks for all the info. I am considering being a P.S.O. I have a question I hope you could help me with.
I have my own phone in my bedroom, but it has the same phone number as the family phone in the living room. Do you know how I could get my own number for my private bedroom phone to use for phone sex? Do I have to go through the phone company (they charge a monthly fee) or would the phone sex company provide me with my own number that they would put on the phone for me?
@caroline – try US companies if you have a clear accent, especially if you are interested in domination phone sex. English girls do very well with that. You can do this by getting a VOIP phone service with a US phone number (done most easily if you have a friend or family member in the US to get it for you). Skype is unlikely to be good enough, but I’m sure there’s a cheap solution out there. You might find recruitment picks up in early summer when the PSO-moms quit/reduce hours because school is out.
@KC – if you’re still living at home with a family phone line, you should not be doing phone sex. You will not be able to keep it a secret from your family. And guys freak out when they hear people or noises in the background (running water, door shut, coughing, etc) – you need to have the freedom to howl until the rafters shake because some guys want that and get pissed if you don’t.
@susan – I also cannibalize my callers’ fantasies and use them with guys who have the same underlying fetish. I read stories on literotica.com for ideas. It helps tremendously that I’m very well-travelled and into social anthropology…you’d be surprised how well these interests serve me on the phone for ideas and scene setting. My repeat caller rate – those who’ve called me 3x or more – is 51% at the company I work for (they run statistics for us) and ~60% as an independent. Bear in mind I specialize in domination and fetishes, which requires a lot more specialized knowledge. I make $5-6K/month working weekends and evenings, and it’s real work – HTML, mp3 production, customer service, writing erotica, developing original promotions, etc. between calls.
I will not reply to any questions about who I work for – they only hire those with experience and a college degree. If you want to get into it as an independent, which will be very slow going if you don’t know how the industry works (your phone might not ring for weeks, no joke – these sites have hundreds of girls logged in for calls at any one time) — Talk Sugar, NiteFlirt, Phone Encounters. Consider joining a forum like http://www.psosupport.com to ask your questions and get reviews of companies to work for. You can also click on the banners over at http://www.phonesexcentral.com and see what companies even exist, and what they offer their customers – you’ll see what you might be expected to discuss or provide.
I know this comment may be a little late, but Thema thank you so much for answering these so many questions…I have a few myself.
I’ve been wanting to get into being a phone actress for a while, but have had no landline.
Hopefully soon I will be moving into an apartment with a friend who knows about my choice and is supportive.
I’m 19 years old now and I have no other job. If I work really hard all day around (let’s say from 12pm until 3am), and if no subject is out of the question for me, can I make enough to support myself? And possibly get my own apartment in a couple of months?
Which company would be best to work for?
1 800 Delilah looks the most appealing but if I were unable to be hired there, where is the best place to go?
I realize that IPSOs make the most, but for now I feel the security of a company would be best.
Thank you so much for your insight!
@Adriane, any company on this list http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK is reputable. I have never worked for Delilah, but if it doesn’t work out, I suggest you choose another company from the list. Keep in mind that calls are not going to be back to back. Therefore, even if you worked for 15 hours straight, you still could only get 5-minute call every 15 minutes or 4 an hour.
I tell people going into this business to look at it as a Side Hustle, not as your primary source of income UNLESS you are an IPSO. As Jane wrote in post #114: Bear in mind I specialize in domination and fetishes, which requires a lot more specialized knowledge. I make $5-6K/month working weekends and evenings, and it’s real work – HTML, mp3 production, customer service, writing erotica, developing original promotions, etc. between calls.
As you can see, Jane has made this into her own business, which includes more than just calls. Don’t think of being a PSO as a get rich scheme. For me, it pays some expenses as a side hustle; however, teaching college pays more. If you are going to work like Jane, sure you could make enough to support yourself. Otherwise, I would suggest looking at getting other sources of income, too.
If companies are paying less than $1 per minute for a call, you should end up making more than minimum wage, but probably not enough to live off of exclusively unless you are a IPSO.
I’m soooooo up for being a pso, at the moment i work part time as a dentist, so my hours a re so flexible and i would love something like this to fill my time, my job requires me to be so serious and up tight at times so letting myself go and and role playing, acting dirty as hell ad being someone other than myself would be fabulous fun. how do i get started????? i’m having real trouble finding out how??? help! xxx
@Layla, try contacting some reputable companies here http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK
T. Thema I want to thank you for this blog. I have been considering doing PSO for several years but didn’t know how to do so. Now I do… I have done several call center jobs on other things and have always been told I have a very Sexy voice along with the fact that I have a southern accent when I choose to. i was raised in the south but have lived in the north since 05 and i pick up accents in the snap of a finger. now only to draw up the courage to do this..
T. Gal. You can always try it. If you don’t like it, then bow out of it. Just brace yourself for any type of call. In other words, don’t be surprised if a caller says something that sounds real crazy.
Hi T. Thema,
Thank you for the excellent info. delivered thoughtfully & intelligently – v. helpful!
Can I ask you a few questions? I’m in the UK and as you’ve heard it’s difficult to get work doing strictly PSO work. I don’t have any contacts in the US but would like to try working for a US company. Is this possible without a US landline? Also if you set up as an IPSO what happens when you want to take a break? Do you lose your client base? You’ve said earlier that you have worked for a UK site is that via chatrecruit.com? Any thoughts/advise welcome!
Sherazade
Oh! also forgot to ask: generally speaking, which niche is the most effective earner?
Thanks!
Hi and thanks T. Thema Martin and J. Money for bringing this topic to the forefront! Still getting responses after all this time – kudos for tapping into the now mainstream interest… very provocative =)
Also a vet. Started in ’99 as a PSO and dispatch operator (think high pressure sales environment) so I kinda get where Evan was coming from as far as the cost-worth ratio having had to sell it to guys for years. There are a lot of free outlets for guys, but eventually your computer screen and your Fleshlight *giggle* might leave you feeling alone and disconnected. Viola! One CC payment later and you are on the phone with the girl of your dreams feeling validated and human again. As long as we are human we will occasionally wish to feel that way and free porn/cam shows don’t do it.
I took a break when I got married and had a munchkin. Now a divorced single parent with no family except the small person about me (You have to eat! The hospital knows I have you!) I value my time more than profit. For me getting back into this line of work than as a massage therapist (no i’ve never, yes they’ve asked *tee hee*) came down to time. I make more money in a spa, but my kid would be at a sitter all day, what fun is that. This is something I do after stories and lullabies until I either can’t keep my eyes open or I see that cute face (on the video monitor) yawn and stretch and hollar “what’s for breakfast mommy”. I’m a night owl anyway so the arrangement barely disrupts my usual sleep regimen and hey we both get a naptime in the afternoon!
It’s not a ton of money cuz I work straight dispatch (they send the calls to my phone with no duties at my end besides answering) and the most I can make is .40c/min, so we are by no means rolling in the dough – or even a quarter of the dough that “jane” makes. BUT I log in or out whenever I want with no minimum log time, as long as I take one call a week my extension stays active, my kid has never seen the inside of a daycare and I make all of my bills with wiggle room for soccer class and a zoo day once in a while ($19 dollars for us to see your lazy lions wtf?). By no means am I saying that daycare is bad or knocking the working parent. I’m just saying that for my situation having a job that meant I got to work while the kiddo slept, rather than returning to a higher paying daytime profession was worth the sexy budgeting ;) like the smile on my face when I only have to fill up my car once a month.
Ok so the real deal. This is not mindless working at Wal-Mart people. You can’t just go in and “take a bash at it” you will get hung up on again and again. You have to come prepared, do your homework. If you just read “fifty shades of grey” and think that THAT guy is calling you we need to have a come to Jesus right now. If you can’t watch hardcore porn or say c%#!, f&$*, or p^$@! without blushing or crawling out of your skin… run away this ain’t for you. If you can’t see yourself working/slaving/chatting/blogging/advertising/and occasionally answering calls for 60 hrs a week but not making any money your first few months I don’t recommend IPSO. If you can put in the groundwork tho, that is where the money is at – if you can hang on long enough for it to roll in. If you need money immediately or this is a side hustle, or even to supplement your budding IPSO biz; a lower paying dispatch center is the quickest way to go. Some centers will issue your extension within 24hrs of receiving your application/documents. They talk about the different kinds of those centers in depth at http://www.psoboards.com and they answer a lot of questions and keep it real – no sugar coating. luv ya Staci!
I also keep the job separate from my personal life and can count on one hand how many people know what I really do. From experience it goes one of two ways when you tell people 1) more often you are shunned like the jezebel that stole your gf’s man that one time in college or 2) less often but more annoying you become the sex guru/sounding board for every sexual issue and no i don’t want to know about that thing you do that makes it do that thing… ewww… I talk about bj’s all day why would I want give you lessons for free (yes, i’ve said that) but I digress…
Webcam, yikes! It’s not so much being on camera. I like my looks/body and I have done content modeling my issue with the rise of the webcam girrrrl is the rise of the jerk that records her without her knowing and uses it/sells it/whatever and she doesn’t see a penny. So think about that ladies, there really isn’t a way to protect yourself from that and companies like niteflirt certainly don’t have your back in that issue. We get recorded too but there isn’t a big market to sell audio only, fortunately.
What is with the landline issue people? This is a job like anywhere else. Do you have a phone in your office/place of work? Does that phone ever drop a call or go into a tunnel or need to be charged? No cuz it’s a good business tool. The phone s*x company is rolling the dice on you being dependable not your cellphone network. Spend the 20 bucks a month on the landline and deduct it on your taxes jeez. *steps off soapbox*
It’s a fun gig in theory. When I was a dispatch operator we saw girls come and go by the dozens because it isn’t easy money. For a lot of people it’s too difficult to compartmentalize your life like that. For some they have an ego that can’t take the rejection – not everyone is gonna like your voice/style. But I’ll never forget one girl that after two weeks announced “I’m getting boobs and becoming a stripper because it’s frustrating to just be on the phone and not see them” – so you might be opening a pandora’s box inside yourself and volunteer to be a mail order bride or something so don’t say I didn’t warn you!
thx for reading, sorry it got really long :p
Mikayla, thanks for the long post. It was well worth the read and then some.
Sherazade, try contacting some reputable companies at http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK. I am not sure if any of those companies hire overseas. I would imagine that an IPSO would alert her client base that she is going on vacation. However, if you are talking about taking a break for months, I would imagine that some clients would go elsewhere. There is definitely no shortage of calls regarding S&M.
I was a phone sex operator for two years. I didn’t work from home, I worked in an office. I did the midnight-7AM shift. The Money was pretty good. I’m thinking of getting back into it for some extra money doing it from home. Thanks for the info and links!
It sounds like a interesting field to begin if you have erotic thoughts never say never! ;P
I would totally be down for trying this. I stay at home with my daughter and hate living tightly every month. I recently saw a story regarding this on Good Morning America. The increase of stay at home moms and other types of women willing to do this as their occupation was fascinating. The only hang up I have is telling the hubby, hey guess what. I think I want to be a PSO, phone actress, sex goddess. Haha, I don’t know how well he’d react to that. Any advice on getting the partners on board with this concept?
Lynette, you know your husband more than I do. What is his attitude about s*x? Does he have a positive, health view of it? If so, it will be easy to bring him onboard. Every man is different. Some men are turned on by their wives being a PSO, just like some men are turned on by their women being strippers. To them, they think, “Even though she is talking s*x to these men, I am the only one she is really doing that stuff with.” As with any successful relationship, always be open, upfront, and honest. Also, stress the fact that there are safety measures in place to keep the men from knowing who you are.
Thanks for sharing this! People of all genders can make a ton of money doing this! Just go for it! I’m super shy but I’m learning. You can make hundreds a day by answering your phone, it’s crazy!
This was a tremendously interesting read. Thank you, T. Thelma, for responding to everyone’s questions. It’s a goldmine of information.
T. Thelma, Hi!
There are so many questions I have about this. All looks safe, fantastic and as well an incredible opportunity. I’m a Single mother and I recently moved to Puerto Rico with some family. At the moment I am taking care of four kids (one mine others are nieces) and I haven’t found a job.sadly I have a condition that prevent me to work doing heavy work. I was wondering if even though I’m here at Puerto Rico (USA territory) if by having the necesary qualification i can still work as PSO.
I’ve had experience as a phone operation on customer service and know Spanish and English is that going to be helpful? I will apriciate your advise. I want something new that I can take advantage of while I am being the “super mom” my kids need.
I look forward for your responce.thanks!
How do I get started?, When
Hi Thema.
Thanks again so much for all answering all the questions on this thread.
I have a college degree (from what many consider to be a “public Ivy” school) and, often browse the hard core porn sites for my own pleasure. All in all, I believe that I have an excellent attitude towards sex and am very interested in getting started.
I have no issues whatsoever with having to get a land line and, live alone. I also think that this is something I would actually ENJOY :)
Main question #1) I know you mentioned that there are some companies that only hire people with college degrees… could you please point me in that direction?
#2) When you mention that you have do “mp3 production” as part of your job, what does that entail? What do you produce the mp3′s for? (sound effects during calls?).
Again, so grateful for your help!
Regards,
Kittie
@ Kittie, I believe you are referring to post #114 by Jane regarding college and mp3. Hopefully Jane will see your posting and respond. Maybe Google “PSO with college degrees” to see if that turns up anything.
@Alex, go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies. I cannot say whether or not they hire workers in PR. Being able to speak Spanish is definitely a HUGE plus because it plays into clients’ fantasies of having a “Hot Latina.”
Hi Thema,
I am married with kids and a professional. Financially, we have been struggling! I will do ANYTHING to keep my home and provide for my kids! I will be reading the comments more thoroughly. I just had some questions about taxes and how to privately pay them. I love my husband but how would I pay taxes on a profession like this without my husband knowing! I need to make more money and this seems perfect to do while everyone is sleeping so I don’t have to be away from my kids during their waking hours! I have no reserves with this type of job,but can’t grasp the privacy, taxes, and legalities of it. I keep searching the web but nothing is very clear! You are the best I have found! Thank you!!!
@Shawnee, as far as I am concerned, honesty is the best policy. There are plenty of women with husbands, fiancees, and boyfriends who do this kind of work. Most of these positions are as contract work, so they take out no taxes. I am not sure how you would be able to hide your income and your home phone line usage from your husband. It is definitely legal work since you are not actually having s*x with your callers, and it is private since they call into a call center and not your home number.
In my mind, its not much different from cyber sex(chat room sex) , which I have done with male acquaintances and total strangers. Also not much different from phone sex which again I have done with lovers and once, with a guy who was a wrong number! He ended up calling me regularly for months, and I dont think I ever knew his name.
Anyway, like most adults, I have a healthy view of sex and am not unacquainted with porno or reading erotica. My only reservation is lack of experience, I would hate to panic when I get a caller asking for something that I have no experience in. Is there any kind of training or something? What is your advice for the total novice looking to start in the business? I would not be eager to become an IPSO until I had way more experience but I am willing to test the waters. I see you have listed reputable companies but do they give you any sort of training or just throw you to the wolves.
@JoJo, I am not sure if all of the companies listed offer training. The only training I had was really about how to work the system for taking calls. I was pretty much thrown to the wolves. Anytime I didn’t know something, I flipped the script and said, “I thought I knew everything. Obviously, an old dog can learn new tricks” and had the person explain to me what he meant. The biggest advantage of being independent is you dictate to clients what services you offer. With a lot of the phone companies, you never know what the person on the other end wants. In my profile at phone companies, I list my specialties, but I still get calls from any and everyone. Unfortunately for a new person, the only way to learn is to just get in there and take calls.
Hi Thema M.
I was looking a way to get in contact with them from the website but I havent have the chance.
Looks like I have to pay before anything else. I don’t know what else to do.
any tips?
@Alex, I am not sure what you mean by you have to ‘pay.’ The Rat Race Rebellion site lists 5 reputable companies to contact that are free. If any company wants you to pay them, then walk away. Which companies told you to pay upfront? This way, I can note it for future reference.
Awesome…don’t knock it till you try it. I was a pro Dom for years and fantasy is a great place to spend sometime unwinding.
Hello Thema M. you are awesome!
I’m looking into becoming a phone actress…saving up money to start a new life with my two kids after divorcing a controlling man ( am also a visual artist which is why I’d like something to do from home while the kids are in school).
I would really prefer the professional crowd of older gentlemen as I am very empathetic and articulate, philosophical (playful and sexual also!) As a teen , before I was married and webcams were non-existent (chat or mic only) I would talk to many, many men in for many many evenings simply because I found their fetishes and characters so fascinating , psychologically speaking. I quit after I got engaged and married, but 10 years later I think my talent for conversation just might save me…
Are there any higher end PSO companies that cater to this crowd? I am half-european and half asian with an accent and well traveled. 28 years of age.
If you’re smart you’ll just join a website like http://www.niteflirt.com or one of the many sites on http://www.myphonesite.com (or create your own) and start marketing like crazy in the mean time.
OMG…i just read all these comments. I have been calling niteflirt to talk to girls on there for the last 5yrs & in the last 2yrs I have spoke to just one girl & I am addicted!! I’m spending all my money on here. she is taking everything. I see by the comments more woman are interested & most likely will be doing this. YOU all have us wrapped around your finger!
@Sinthia, the big PSO companies cater to all. However, you may luck up and find a boutique PSO company that caters just to the professional crowd. Good luck with that one! As Tiffani points out, when you are an Independent PSO, you can choose your own crowd.
I am calling niteflirt again tonight to talk to this one girl. I can’t resist calling when her line is on. she’s charging $4.99 a minute. She tells me how much money she’s making.. It’s incredible
Serious inquirys only please. Im horny for a male fit guy call me! 773-725-6451 my business phone or my cell 773-216-6451 just ask for saul if im infront of someone i will call you right back play along ;)
I’m actually a MALE in the industry but my calls are usually diverted to gay lines….which are ummm rather interesting and don’t make as much money….but I’ve also had vocal training (acting classes) i do the regular lines too…..LOTS OF MONEY from both sides…LOL hey its’ better than working at a convenient store…
Hi all, I’ve been a phone actress for a year and a half and I LOVE it, I work the hours that I choose, can refuse any calls that I find inappropriate and I make great money:) I am a 49 year old divorced woman and this is how I pay my bills and have money for fun stuff. My family knows what I do, and my daughter actually works for the same company as I do so we sometimes compare callers and get a good laugh together. She is a college student and single mother and she has fun with it too. We both have some regular callers that stay on the line with us for hours sometimes, and then of course get the ones that just wanna get on and get “off” I, like Thelma, keep an index box and cards on regular callers and they share all kinds of personal info with me and I share with them, up to a point:) I never ask for last names or financial info or anything like that (its also frowned upon by the co. I work for) and as I said, I dont have to talk about things I find distasteful. Also am NOT allowed to discuss minors, blood related family fun or bestiality. Plan on getting married soon, my future hubby knows what I do and he KNOWS that for me, its a JOB and he is ok with that:)
@sue—omg..this is just what I am talking about!1 i can’t stop calling niteflirt. I spent nearly all of the $$$ in my bank account tonight..I don’t know what i’m going to do now… you’re just LOL about it & taking everything from us.
Hi T. Thelma!
I have been pondering this idea for some time – I’m a college educated 20 something who can’t seem to get out of debt or this cloud of bills… reading your article and some other’s I’ve found have shown me that I have all the “Qualifications,” I live alone, have a healthy attitude and an excellent voice. I’m going to go for it – I need a flexible and reliable way for an additional income.
Thanks for your tips, I do have a few questions I’m hoping you could help me with. (First let me say that it’s awesome how you’ve kept this thread going for almost a year and continued to help others get info.)
I am currently waiting for the phone company to come and set up a land line. Is it better to WAIT to apply through these websites until I have that phone in place or can I go ahead and start applying online?
What kinds of questions should I ask when in the process of getting hired? My phone plan is only going to cover US calls – so is there anything you suggest for a company solely in the US?
Which companies would you recommend to work for?
Do you have a separate deposit account for payments other than your main checking/savings?
I’m really hoping this is the answer for me to be able to get out of debt and actually start saving for the future.
Thanks again for the great article and continued support of everyone’s questions.
@Jill, I am so glad that you found the article to be very informative. I believe in helping others to succeed because there is enough success and money for everyone. You have 2 choices. If you are going to get a landline on a definite day, then you could go ahead and apply. That way if someone responded back to you quickly, when asked if you have a landline, you could say, “The phone company is coming out on ______ to install it.” Or, you could wait until it is actually installed and working. That way when the companies call you back, you could say, “Yes, I have a phoneline.” If I am the recruiter, I am going to pick the girl who already has a landline in place because if you tell me that you are going to get one, I would think that something could happen that you don’t get it. There is no shortage of women with landlines who are ready to go.
Usually, the application will say that you must have a landline, so companies are looking for you to be ready to go, as opposed to waiting to get the required equipment, especially since so many women are applying for these jobs. Keep in mind, too, that the company will run a check on your phone to make sure that the landline is up and running.
Once you apply, it could take a month to hear something or they could call you the next day. It doesn’t matter if your landline only covers the US because the phone calls are routed to you via a 800 number. A caller from New York, Sydney, Tijuana, or London calls a 800 and then it is routed to you. The company will tell you what you cannot have on your phone, i.e. call waiting.
Go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies. I just receive money via a regular checking account. Some companies still send out a paper check. As long as you deal with a reputable company, you should have no problem.
You want to ask questions regarding the work schedule and time requirements. For instance, some companies have a set schedule, which may require you to work weekends. Most companies need the most help from Midnight to 6am, and they may pay extra during those times. Some companies don’t care when you work as long as you do a set number of hours weekly.
You also want to know how many calls or minutes are you supposed to do. For instance, a company way say that you must take 6 calls an hour or you must talk at least 30 minutes during that hour, or whatever. Good luck!
Hi T. Thema
So I came across your post browsing for work at home options. I used to be a camgirl but I quit doing that because I found out Im pregnant and the guys on the site I worked for are a bunch of cheapasses trying to get everything for free (you can thank the girls who break rules and give away too much in public chat). I just got tired of it and unfortunately Im having a hard time getting a job due to my pregnancy (and I have a degree) and im literally swimming in bills it’ll be harder when my baby gets here.
I came across becoming a PSO and im thinking about giving it a shot. What companies do you recommend getting started on? Any advice? I would appreciate it.
Go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies.
Hi T. Thema! I’ve been considering doing this for months now. I am so glad I ran across this site and saw your long-running conversations with people. I haven’t read this whole blog yet, only about 1/4. So my questions might be redundant. I have a few questions with several more to follow I’m sure! 1) How much $ do you bring in a month doing this? (I’m sorry, I know this is terrible rude to ask and you needn’t answer if yr not comfortable but it will give me incentive & hope that I need!) 2) What company do you work for at this time? …. or 3) Do you not work or a company & market yourself & supply your own number?
@Kim, look up top at the article because I describe income. Go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies. I haven’t had much success at working for myself. I just know that people who work for themselves make the most. Tiffani at post #142 said, “If you’re smart you’ll just join a website like http://www.niteflirt.com or one of the many sites on http://www.myphonesite.com (or create your own) and start marketing like crazy in the mean time.” You may want to contact Tiffani to see how she markets.
Unbelievable. I just want to say as a man i am addicted to calling these lines. i can’t stop. sometimes I spend nearly 80% of my paycheck doing this.
Thanks so much for writing this hilarious review! Glad to hear you had a giggle, reading this made me smile lots :) If you/ anyone else fancies giving it a go working for yourselves not a company check out my site, that way you don’t have to give the company all its commisions (usually they pay you 18p a min and charge clients £1.50)
Marnie xx
Marnie – What is your site?
Thanks,
Kim
I have absolutely no problem helping newbs in the business and even have my very own promotion/phone sex site where I promote specifically BBW but am venturing out to more! I’m super easy to contact you can just click my name and it’ll take you to my site.
It is definitely hard work (pun intended) and may take a bit to get started, but if you want to do this and are just wasting your time NOT doing it, you’ll get no where! There are so many new sites and opportunities popping up and you better believe they want to make money so they are marketing like crazy.
I’ve been sending new PSO’s to this article, I love it!
Thanks for continuing to keep the comments open on this — clearly people are still searching for information and considering the option! Regarding the subject of who you as a PSO talks to/with, as an independent it all comes down to your character creation, listing and marketing efforts. You can capture the “boutique” crowd as well as any other simply by positioning yourself.
Someone on this board asked about a companies for college-educated women. I came across this ad, but please note that I know nothing about this company:

how do pso’s recieve payments ? through mail with checks ?
I love this topic. I’ve always wanted to work as a phone actress but never had the guts to do it. When i was saying every guy i talked to told me i had a nice sexy voice.i always thought i was too shy do it but wanted t do so bad. I have a question…….
Do i have to have a home phone can’t i use my cell phone?
@Keylen, some companies do direct deposit, while others send a paper check. Usually you are responsible for paying your own taxes since you are usually a contract employee.
@Niecy, each company varies but most require a landline with no features such as call waiting, unless you work for yourself (not for a company) as an Independent PSO. With the latter, you can use a cell.
I have viewed just about evey comment posted starting way back in 2011 of Oct.. This has really been helpful to me Thank You. Now I just gotta find the right company to become a PSO with. Quick question: What race is in high demand ?
@Tarsha, if you are talking about ethnicity, it is hard to say. I don’t know of any PSO who has said that she doesn’t get callers because she is of a certain race. There are enough men who are going to want a woman of any race. Keep in mind that numbers are going to reflect society. Therefore, the majority of PSOs are going to be white. So, there is always going to be a need for ethnic women. However, I see more ads stating they want women with ‘accents’ more than I do ads for ethnic women.
Hi Thema,
Thanks for the article. This is so informative. I, like many others, have been trying to look for creative side venues for income.
I just have a quick question. When calls are forwarded to your phone line, does it show up on caller ID as being a phone call from the company? I have a landline but I do get regular calls throughout the day. I am just wondering while I’m working a shift whether I can discern whether it’s a regular phone call or one that’s from a client.
Jenny, and anyone else interested, as an independent phone sex operator, the calls come in from the platform site/company’s phone number. (Client calls are routed through the company’s line, keeping both your phone number and the caller’s phone number safe from the other seeing it.) This way you can see and identify (and on your cell, save & label it in your contact list) the phone number so you’ll know in advance.
WOW! Just WOW!
A year ago, me and my fiance talked about me being a phone sex operator. I had came to him with the idea after watching the movie “Valentines Day”
He was all for it saying that he would like to listen while i spoke to the men on the other line and so forth. I was pretty excited at first and was pumped for a phone interview. But then something just completely knocked me out my boots and I freaked and couldn’t do it, I have still thought about doing it I just get so nervous I’m not positive I would be able to talk to men in that kind of way everyday, I’m not sure if you still check the comments, but I want to know if you still do it? And what type of advice can you give to me since I have been shy but I am interested in doing after working at a call center for the past 8 months, I have gotten more confidence talking to strangers. And also what company would you give preference to?
Thank you for posting this article. I too am a college professor, teaching one class this semester, 3 in the spring. I was a 6 figure corporate sales exec until 2009 when my company merged with another and they use that as excuse to cut the top 20 sales people. I have been trying to find something from home to supplement my university job. Until now I was reallyskepital about this job opportunity. But, I think I will give a try and see what happens. I am imaginative if nothing else…
Taylor, go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies. I suggest working for a company that has no set schedule but just a minimum hours rule. For example, one company may state that you make your own hours, but you have to work at least 10 hours a weekly.
I am all about trying new things. So I always tell people to just try it. The hardest part is that first call and first day. After that, it gets easier and easier because you become more aware of what men are looking for. Keep in mind that at most companies, you are a contract worker, so they are used to women trying it and leaving if it doesn’t work for them.
I call niteflirt Taylor C & I’m addicted to this.
I have worked for a few companies but then stumbled on http://WWW.FILTHYSEXY.COM who are good if you want a bit of extra cash on the side without being tied down to contracts, rota’s, set hours, etc. You might not get rich from it but its dead easy to get signed up and earning and I have been doing it for about 4 months now for some extra cash on the side.
I am making about $50-$80 a week from calls and about another $20 a week from tips and they pay weekly.
The thing that I REALLY REALLY like, which may sound stupid to most people, is they can send calls to you on a cell phone! Being able to answer calls when sat in traffic in my car or on my lunch from my regular job is a big plus for me!
Oh yeah, they don’t seem to care where you are from in the world as they can send calls to you wherever you are in the world (so long as you know your international code!) :)
how do I find you on there “Filthy girl” I will call!!
I was watching this movie the other night which really inspired me to check into this. Alittle more money on the side doesn’t hurt. I like this article help a lot. I think I want to work for and start my own business.
Does the landline have to be corded I have a homephone wireless, would this not work?
I would like to be back into the phone sex chat busniess again, was on anothere site and have 2 yrs exp. I am 57 female, five three, 110lbs… blue eyes, long brown hair. Love to wear corsets, thigh highs and six inch heels… i was into what ever my caller wanted and have had calls for up to and over 183 minutes on an average… I am part native american.
@Meanna, most companies that require a landline require it to be corded with no features on it (i.e., no call waiting). The logic is the cordless phone could die or have less of a clear reception.
Wow, I just finished reading all of this forum. It sounds like the fastest way to get started is with an agency and the way to make the most money is as an independent, so it would make sense if I need an income quickly but want to maximize my earning potential, to start with an agency while building and promoting an indie business?
Do the PSO companies generally allow this, or do they have non-competition clauses in their contracts? Is it considered ethical if a clientele you have built at an agency follows you to your independent business?
How do independent PSO’s protect their privacy? I am a professional in a small town and I do not want anyone to know that I am doing this. I would think the most vulnerable place, the one where our real name meets our income source, is our bank account. As a for instance, what if I am required to produce my bank statements for a credit application or worse, my son’s college financial aid application? How do PSO’s manage this?
I am very encouraged by this site and very appreciative. I had a husband in prison so I know my phone sex, and had a grand time with instant message sex when it was a new thing. I’m a counselor leaving the profession so I know I have the listening skills. Everyone tells me I have a sexy voice. My son has recently moved in with his girlfriend and there’s no one at home in the woods to listen except the dogs, cats, and a tame opossum. The office in town is soundproof and my office-mate is likely to join in because frankly, this pays better than most insurances do for psychotherapy. I’m even used to running and promoting my own business.
I definitely want to aim for the indie work but need to get the cash flow moving and don’t want to waste time getting on with an agency only to find myself painted into an ethics corner where my business-building is concerned. Your thoughts?
And . . . what do PSO’s do when they don’t want to use their own picture(s)?
Mwah!
@Lynn, I have never had a company to mandate a non-compete clause, especially since you are a contract worker. As far as taking clientele, I am not sure how you would do that. Every company I worked for did not allow you to give them your indie business information, so I am not sure how they would be able to follow you. Also, you cannot ask clients for personal information.
For instance, if your indie business is Lynn.comm, you cannot tell agency clients, “If you want to talk to me further, contact me at Lynn.comm” nor “I am about to leave this agency, so you can contact me at Lynn.comm.” Agency clients are agency clients. If agencies allowed them to leave, they would make no money because PSOs would just work at an agency just to get clients and then leave.
As far as protecting privacy, you just provide a toll free number to clients. If you are concerned about people finding out what you do regarding employment, and financial and credit applications, you may want to rethink this profession. I don’t know of a 100% way for people not to find out because you will get a 1099 for tax purposes.
There are sites out there where you can buy fake pictures to use. Also, keep in mind that you can also use your own pictures but where sunglasses, an S&M mask, or a masquerade mask. Keep in mind that even though you are selling a fantasy, it has been my experience that men want reality. I give men my REAL dimensions, AGE, and physical features. The pictures I use are really of me wearing a masquerade mask and sunglasses. The notion that every man wants a young, cover girl, supermodel, stripper, or playmate is FALSE. Some men call for women over 40, ethnic women, big women, pregnant women, redheads, transgenders, etc. Trust me, out of 3 billion men, you will find enough who like you for what you really look like.
I would like more information about a possible operator position.
How do I know your company is legit?
How do you pay?
Taboo company?
I’ve worked in this field before and I’ve been very successful.
I look forward to hearing from you.
@Jennifer, go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies.
Hello
Thank you for all this great information.
I’m an Australian girl, wanting to break into the PSO world.
Can I work from an international company?
Jane, http://www.chatrecruit.com/about_us used to hire international operators. I don’t know if they still do.
I’ve been considering doing this for some time. I’m a student in desperate need for some extra money. But i still live with my parents and don’t have a landline. I’m really glad you wrote this so i know what to expect
I work on a cam site, but want to make more money. Other girls give out their cell phone number for a certain amount of money each week. My question is how do they do it? Do they get a disposable cell phone with a new number each week? Or do they change their number each week ? if someone pays me for a week of having my number , what hapends the next week?do i have to be blocking them or changing my number?
I am most interested in a dispatch position.
You know, just to get my feet wet first.
Is there any other special equipment
(besides land line phone with no extras) that
I would need? And is there a high demand for PSO
dispatching from home? I think I would like to try this
first before jumping into PSO. Same companies
to apply as stated in above comments?
@Donna, by ‘dispatch’ position, are you talking about becoming a dispatch operator where the calls are dispatched to you via a call center. If so, go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies. You just need a landline and a good headset is desirable for long calls.
@Donna, here is a link to a Phone Sex Dispatcher position http://www.palmislandinc.com/dispatcher-application.php
This is very interesting.
i would love to do this but im living with other people but have my own room
im 21 and i have never worked only volunteer work.
and i have seen one site says they do background checks?
why is that?
i have a cell phone right now.
and like someone mention they talked to there husband in prison
i have done that too. and also done phone sex with men off party lines o.0 lol good times
so would i be eligible to do this cause i know if i get a good check ill be able to get landline of my own
i also live in the west coast
do they connect to online chat
@Jazzy, please note that some companies require you to have a landline BEFORE you are hired because they run a check to make sure that the landline is valid. Since you have to provide a SSN, I am sure some kind of background check is done, but I am not sure what exactly is checked. They could be checking for fraud. The only way you will know if you are eligible is if you apply to companies. Go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies.
I am a 30 year old single mom and need a job I have always been told I have a phone sex type of voice this just seems like the best job for me at this time. please call if your interested in me I will be one of your best employees ever…
@DeVonne, I don’t hire PSOs. Go to http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK for a listing of reputable companies.
Thanks for bringing light to a business that i have worked years in … we seem to be in the shadow alot .. if anyone is looking for to get their feet wet .. send me a resume at me email address posted above and we can see about getting you started.
I would like to speak….pls free call to call me on 98420 52169…for peppy sexy talk……waiting babe…..after 7 30 pm…till midnight…daily.
It’s articles like these that have inspired me to delve into the word of a PSO! I’m excited! And I’m blogging about it like a giant dork!
Congrats! Good luck! :)
Have Taboos vs No Taboos Companies.
One topic that I didn’t really discuss in the article in detail is Have Taboos vs No Taboos companies. My article discusses a Have Taboos company, which means there are topics PSOs are NOT allowed to discuss with clients such as pedophilia, bestiality, murder, and incest. Rape is allowed just depending on how the role play is handled.
However, there are companies that have No Taboos, which means anything goes or anything goes except anything that would be illegal in real life. So when you are deciding which company to work for, you want to know if taboos are allowed or not. It makes a difference with the type of callers who will call you.
For example, I take calls that ARE taboo. Therefore, I receive LESS calls that are more straight sex than I did when I worked for companies that didn’t allow taboos.
In GENERAL, my TOP 3 type of calls now are:
1. Forcing a non-black man to watch his wife/girlfriend have sex with a black man
2. Engaging a non-black man to experiment with a black man
3. Man being dominated by me
.Jessica, much success with both jobs and the Phone Sex Writer blog.
Income – Regarding income, on average, you will receive more if you work for a No Taboo (anything goes) company or a company that specializes in Fetishes (men who like to wear diapers, men who love feet, etc.)
Pay is usually based on the length of the call and/or when you work (late shift may pay more). For example, you may make 20 to 50 cents a minute at a Have Taboos company (they do NOT allow taboos). However, at the No Taboos or Fetish company, you may make 50 cents to a dollar a minute.
This article was great – and I just read every comment! Thank you for all the very helpful and detailed info. I’ve recently been thinking about becoming a PSO. I have always been told I have a sexy voice, and I am pretty ggg and open-minded when it comes to sex. I have no qualms about talking dirty – I love talking dirty in real life with my actual lovers, and have gotten guys off on the phone before. I’ve also been told several times that I would make a good domme, even though it’s not my thing personally (I enjoy bondage and role-playing but NOT humiliation of any kind – I think sex should be empowering). However, I know it’s just acting, and I have years of acting training and performing under my belt, so I know I could do it.
After being told again and again that I would make a great domme, I downloaded a bunch of really good e-books on the subject of how to dominate men, and it is fascinating! I don’t have a landline phone now, but I checked and the simple basic service is only $16/month before taxes and fees, so figure $20/month. It only includes local calling out, but I am going to investigate to confirm that I’d be able to get incoming calls from anywhere (I assume so). I was thinking of doing it to work as a call center operator, like for customer service, but being a PSO surely pays more.
So, with my situation, I am a soon-to-be-divorced 50-something woman (my voice is youthful) who is totally starting over in so many ways. My ex has been a real idiot and refuses to give me any spousal support. He ended the marriage when I was unemployed, a student, and the economy was at its worst – and yet he thought it was okay to walk away from a long-time marriage without helping me get back on my feet. I tried to complete my degree and hang on, but I maxed out what I could borrow for tuition (and to live on) and had a tough time focusing on schoolwork with the stress of my marriage ending. I couldn’t find work for over two years and almost became homeless. I even panhandled to make ends meet until I found a retail job, which saved my life. For the past six months I’ve been able to pay my rent and the five months of back rent I owed. I now live alone, have no kids, but things are still very tight. I am living paycheck to paycheck. I will either have to get a roommate, which I really don’t want to do, or find some way to increase my income.
So, I am thinking of doing phone sex a couple of hours at night after I finish my retail job, maybe three or four nights a week. I hope a company out there can accommodate that kind of schedule. I live in an apartment with some noisy neighbors but if I did this, I would invest in good noise-cancelling headset (specific brand recommendations welcome!) and create a foam-padded area (sort of a “booth”) in my apartment to do this. If I could make another $1000/month, I’d be ecstatic. I think I would sell myself as a domme (after reading up on it some more), a cougar looking for her cub, and a bbw. Those are all aspects of me that I would easily be able to role-play. I guess I don’t have a specific question, but if you have any advice or comments related to what I wrote, I would appreciate it. Thanks again for your comprehensive and informative article (and subsequent comments!).
Oh, I wanted to add that I think I would just rather work for a dispatch company and not become an IPSO, for the sheer fact that I don’t have the energy to market myself as much as it sounds like I should to be an indie in this. Is that good logic? I work my retail job five days a week, and want to enjoy my life, too, so I want something that brings in a moderate extra income for as little investment as possible.
@Deanna, your key is going to be finding the company that pays a high rate per minute (.50 or more) and who has flexible hours.
You may want to check sites that deal primarily with fetishes such as Cougars, Adult Diaper Lovers, BBW, etc. What you may have to do is start at any company regardless of pay in order to gain experience and then move on to a high paying company. However, even if you quit a company on good terms, they still may NOT want to re-hire you if you want to come back later.
Since you work, I suggest finding a company that has flexible hours. For instance, some companies require that you maintain a set shift. That might not work for you. I prefer companies that allow you to jump on line at will. However, they still might have a minimum hours weekly requirement of 10 or 20 hours but not a set schedule.
How many girls a company already has is another important factor because if they have too many girls and not enough clients, you will get fewer calls, which means it would be harder to reach your financial goal. If your goal is $33 daily, you would have to be on the phone talking 1.10 hours at $.50 minute. However, you might have to be open to taking calls for 4 hours just to get 1 hour of clients talking to you.
The goal, in order to make the most money, is to eventually become an IPSO because if a client is paying $2 per minute and you are only paid $.50, you would only make $30 for a one hour call. If you were an IPSO, you would make $120 and pay your hosting company a percentage (maybe 33%) to route calls to you.
If you buy a very good noise-canceling headset, such as by Plantronics, then you shouldn’t need to pad a room unless you have extremely noisy neighbors who are as loud as a war zone.
When you are on the phone acting, keep in mind that you have to be a variety of characters, so don’t get caught up with I will sell myself as a domme, cougar, BBW etc. If a caller wants a transgender man, you have to play that role, too, even though that might not be you. You might have to role-play as a 19 year old even though you are 50.
HELLO THEMA
ARE THEIR MALE PSO’S? I’M A GAY MALE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PSO. ARE THERE JOBS OUT THERE FOR ME?
@Frank, I don’t know of any companies that hire men. However, try the companies listed at
http://ratracerebellion.com/GMA-PSO.html#axzz1hmBOC4MK and see if those companies can refer you to companies that hire men. Also, have you tried looking in the free gay publication for your city? In the classifieds, maybe they have ads for male PSOs.
Also, email or tweet the blogger who has been a PSO for over 10 years at http://phonesexsecrets.blogspot.com/. She may know of a reputable company for men to work for.
Just to clarify, I’ve been an independent PSO for over a decade, which means I have no experience with companies who hire (I’ve never been interested in the small rate they pay at).
I will say, that men can make money in phone sex as independent PSOs (at sites like NF, MPS, etc.) if they are willing to take calls from men. This includes gay sex, but also “forced faggotry” and the like.
I’m so glad this blog is still active, even 2 years later!! :D I was recently let go from my job and was looking for ways to work from home. My boyfriend & I have talked about me becoming a PSO and he’s totally on board with the idea! I would also like to mention a website I’ve come across (it was recommended by a friend of mine who was a PSO) Sexyjobs.com. You create a resume and can select what type of work you’re intrested in & browse the companies that are currently hiring. Thanks so much for this blog! It’s been a HUGE help. You’ve answered so many questions, given great referances and eased some of my nerves on becoming a PSO! Take care and good luck to everyone! <3
Ms T. Martin-
Your blog is very informational and empowering, and your feedback is amazing!!
However, I have a very serious question:
I am a licensed counselor. Do you think this work would be in anyway considered unethical given my profession (in the eyes of a state licensing board)? More importantly, is there any way that pursuing this opportunity could cause irreparable damage to my career (i.e. losing my license)? I assume that no one would ever find out, but would an intensive and thorough background check reveal my employment or association with this work? If my involvement did surface, is there ANY chance that this type of work (PSO, of course not web cam services) could be detrimental to me as a professional in the long run? I’ve worked extremely hard for my license, reputation, and education (paying back loans is part of my reason for seeking this supplemental income) and I don’t know what I’d do if I unintentionally jeopardized that!! I’m sorry for the multiple questions, but I’ve read all of the comments and I don’t think this topic has been addressed (my apologies if it was). Thanks in advance!! – Lilly
Lilly, I suggest you look at the case of former New York Assistant Attorney General Alisha Smith who was suspended because her employer stated that she didn’t report outside income for being a Dominatrix. Smith states that she was never paid as a Dominatrix and was only suspended because her lifestyle was a “political embarrassment.” http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/10/17/ny-asst-ag-quits-after-story-claiming-she-was-paid-to-be-dominatrix/
Contact your State Licensing Board and get the rules for outside income and ethics. Also, let’s be real, being a Sex Worker of any sort is NOT going to go over well with the majority of society members, especially other women because a lot will NOT want you around their men because they equate sex worker with homewrecker.
I don’t care if you are PSO who is secretary in corporate America, your co-workers would still look at you sideways. As a PSO/Dominatrix-In-Training, I could never be a Big Sister because that organization feels that my occupation is not proper. In your case, if your clients somehow found out, they might be turned off (unless you are counseling sex workers), which could wreck your business.
I am VERY open and positive about being a PSO/Dominatrix-In-Training, and I have a VERY open and positive attitude about consensual sex, whereas most Americans don’t share my same position.
