Announcing Our Very First Love Drop!

Love Drop Logo
Hello hello my beautiful friends! Are you ready to help change someone’s life today? I hope so because a good friend and I are on a mission to drop some love on a family who could really really use it. And we’ll need all the help we can get :)

Budgets Are Sexy has teamed up with Nate from ItStartsWith.Us (the social movement “changing the world in 15 minutes a week”) and we’re on a warpath to do all we can to GIVE BACK. But not to just anyone, or any organization, but to someone close to us. Someone who we know is going through a tough time financially, and simply needs another life raft to hold onto.

Nate has done an excellent job of bringing people together to donate their time, but every now and then an extra dollar or two can make all the difference in the world. And that is what Love Drop is about – gathering those who would like to participate in something bigger than themselves by contributing $1 or $5 a month to our special “pot.” The pot that goes out to someone we care for each and every month :)

And this month’s Love Drop mission is on behalf of Angie – a good friend of Nate’s, whose family needs all the support they can get.

Just two weeks ago they woke up to one of the scariest sounds you can imagine in the middle of the night – their fire alarm. Only what usually turns out to be a dying battery or two, became a full-blown fire throughout their entire house :( Every family member made it out okay (Thank God!), but they lost all their belongings in the process, and will be living out of a hotel for the next five months.

{Donations now over — Thanks for all the support, guys!}

So if you’d like to join us today and help drop this love bomb on them, click that big orange “CHIP IN” button above and become a part of the movement! $1 multiplied by a few hundred can make amazing things happen, baby :)

—————————
PS: If you know of someone yourself who can use our help, please let us know! It’s all about giving back to our community.

What a great idea! Something simple. Is the family in the DC area by chance or have kids?
    I “chipped in”

This is a great idea J!! I hope you get a lot of support for this man! You know I got your back. I chipped in bro!

I would love to see the amount raised to be close to or higher than $500. In an economy as unsettling as the one we are in I know that would make a huge difference for Angie and her family!

    Let’s make a difference!

This is nice, but why not Love Drop on someone from ModestNeeds.org? Has this person been vetted for actual need? Is this a contribution to a 501(c)3? (I realize Angie is a friend of Nate’s, but this seems kind of random and sure if every gives a dollar, great. For folks like me, willing to give more, I’d like it to be tax deductible! lol )

Please when you guys decide to tag someone else, I encourage you guys to pluck someone from ModestNeeds.org. I’ve never regretted giving them my money when there were my charitable project a few years ago.

Interesting stuff! I hope this goes far and wide!

You guys are awesome – THANK YOU!!!

@Alice – Thank you for chipping in and RT’in on Twitter :) No, Angie and her family do not live in the DC area, but they do have kids!
@Brad Chaffee – You have always got our back Brad, really really appreciate that. I hope you know you’re a friend for life :)
@Tim – We do what we can, right? Thanks for stopping by!
@mapgirl – I knew I could count on you to throw some of these questions out ;) A couple of things:
    1) We’re in talks of getting Love Drop legally set up – so hopefully one day soon all donations WILL be tax deductible :) Plus, we realize that will also make every feel better about donating.
    2) Haven’t been over to ModestNeeds.org as yet, but I’ll check it out – sounds pretty cool from the title! The whole purpose around Love Drop is to directly affect someone close to us or that we know is going through a hard time. We have a lot of ideas in the hopper, and we really believe this can change lives as a stand-alone charity/movement. I think all charities and foundations out there are AWESOME, and we hope to add another one to the mix :)
@Jenny Blake – Believe me Miss Blake, I am working really hard on that :) I absolutely love to be out there with all you creative geniuses. Just look at what we’re accomplishing from just ONE LUNCH! You are a mad connector girl, and I hope you know you have become a friend for life. Thank you for always supporting us and keeping us motivated, I’ve got nothing but love for you :)
@Selfish Me – Perhaps you could try a side hustle?

Love the idea. It exists in other forms, but this is quick and easy and helps a friend of a friend of a cyberfriend…so it feels more personal :)

Just re-read that. Wow, that sounds twisted…or like something out of a 60’s sci-fi book.

I need to wait for my pay check to come in next week and I’ll see what I can do. I do have concerns like @Mapgirl but if Angie is one of your friends Nate then I guess she’s okay lol.

    @ Amelia, @Jenny, @Han:

Yep, this does exist in other forms, but we’re thinking that if we take recommendations directly from our contributing members, we’ll always be making a difference in the lives of people close to our group . . . a “give where you live” kind of thing.

We do want to make sure that this doesn’t turn into a kind of lottery system, however, so maybe a rule stating that if you’re a member of the group, you can never get the money? I dunno, that’s something J. and I will have to figure out. But with the help and input from people like you, it’ll be easier.

Thanks so much for your participation!

I sent $1.00. I don’t see why such a small donation multiplied by hundreds HAS to be tax-deductible. This is a great concept and I’m all for it.

I’m starting a new blog called Brain Traveler over at http://BrainTraveler.com. It’s still in it’s formative stages; but stop by and take a look. We have contests also. You can follow me on Twitter @DrPallas

    Thank you

Hmmm…no references? Not sure what you mean by that, sorry :( It should take you directly to the donation page where you can either pay via the funds in you PayPal account, or use a credit card through their system.

I’ll hit ya up via email – thx for stopping by! Just friended you on Facebook :)

(actually just saw via your email that you may be outside the U.S.? maybe that’s what’s causing this…)

Fantastic idea. I’ve tossed in five dollars, myself; here’s hoping what goes around, comes around (a little karmic help to get another job and have more money to donate would be wonderful). Here’s hoping Angie and family get back on their feet very, very soon.

This will run as a purchase and not a cash-advance on my credit card right? I hate to sound so 1990s but I am not very familiar with how PayPal works. I am willing to make a donation but not if it will end up with me getting hit with cash-advance fees or interest on it.

Thx Tom! Didn’t get a chance to eat your fishies while out at your joint, but I’m sure they’re awesome :)

@Kevin – That’s a very good question my man, and I’m 99.99% sure that it just shows up as a regular ol’ credit card purchase. I use paypal’s c/c transaction at least once every other month, and I’ve never had it show as a cash xfer or anything :) If it still makes you nervous though, you could also use a debit card or bank account – both of those are also accepted.

When we get everything formalized, we’ll be sure to eliminate these paying problems. Thanks for considering Love Drop!

I also wanted to say that I am so pleased with the results of this Love Drop! AWESOME! Over $400 so far and the clock is still ticking. I sure hope you reach $500, and I hope Angie is real pleased with the generosity of such wonderful people, for someone that they do not even personally know.

That’s what love is all about! This isn’t even my blog and I want to personally thank each and everyone of you who donated whatever you could to help change someones life! Anytime you do one of these J, I am in dude! Great job my friend!! :D

This is a Wonderful Idea! I pitched in in honor of my 6 y/o son. He has been fixated on the possibility of a house fire recently. I am not sure what started his concern, but we have been using the opportunity to teach some fire safety…and we have been trying to reassure him also. The most important thing is that everyone gets out alive, but I am sure it is still very devastating to lose everything all at once!

Hey Bob – THANK YOU!!! Just saw that come through, actually :) That’s a great question because we haven’t thought about how that’s going to work yet. We’re def. keeping track of everything, just gotta figure out how to easily alert people w/out bugging them! haha… But it’s on our list to review now, so thanks for bringing it up.

And thanks again for being one of the first Love Drop members! Time to do some good!

I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this and your understanding in my question. Will it be possible in the near future to use Paypal instead of the echeck? I look forward to the success I’m sure you will have in this.

The only way you can contribute money is through PayPal right now! :) That’s how you signed up to Love Drop, right? Should have been an option to use your paypal funds, credit card, etc etc all through that PayPal button you clicked.

  36. Bob November 7, 2010 at 12:34 PM

I did use paypal which I am glad I prefer it that way. Paypal required an echeck which means the money comes directly out of my checking account at my home bank not the balance I have on Paypal. I just would have preferred to use my paypal account balance rather than a transfer from my bank. I know it is all semantics but it is for budgeting purposes.

Ahhhh…. yeah, there’s def. a way to use your paypal funds or c/c as that’s how I did it when I signed up myself (was the 1st member – woot woot!) but I’ll have to look into it more and jot down the steps I took so it’ll help you and the others. sorry about that!

I didn’t see an option to use a credit card, I would have gladly done it that way. I don’t have a backup funding for Paypal (on purpose) so that I can’t overdraft. Any transactions I make that exceed my balance on paypal would be declined. It is a very convenient budgeting feature for me so I can’t go over if there is no money there.
