Hits and Misses Part Deux

Hidey ho, neighbors! I had a lot more awesome (and not so awesome) stuff happen in the world of money again this week, so I thought I’d do another round of hits and misses like we did last Friday. Do y’all like this kinda stuff, or do you not really feel like you get much out of them? You seemed to enjoy last week’s, but just wanna check in so I’m not boring anyone too much ;) They’re real fun for me to do cuz I get to recap everything and remind myself not to be such an idiot! Haha…

Anyways, here’s what went down this week…

Hits of the week:

  • I earned $68.56 more off my consignment items! How fantastic! And I just brought a 3rd round of goodies over to them too on Wednesday: artwork, vintage frames, candle holders, sconces, knick knacks, and a whoooooooole bunch of old LPs I no longer listen to. Which apparently are coming back and hopefully means a lot more $$$ in the future :) On a side note, I once bought 800+ of them off a real life hoarder at a yard sale for $20, and have been selling them in chunks since for around $50 a load. I’m now down to the last couple of boxes I just dropped off for consignment (minus my favorites, of course), so we’ll see how well they do. I’d much rather listen to records over MP3s any day – they’re so much more romantic and BETTER quality!
  • The Mrs. found some unclaimed money just like you! We don’t know how much exactly yet, but it was because y’all were plugging in your friends’ and families’ names that gave me the idea to do it too :) And my wife came out the lucky winner! Woohoo! Haha… she doubts it’ll be for anything big (it was a long lost check from temping 9+ years back), but it’s still some free sexy money. If you still haven’t checked for any yourself, now’s the time! Start with MissingMoney.com and go from there… or read my article on it that I just linked to up there.
  • I Bought the new Mumford & Sons album! :)  Nothing to do with making sexy money this week, but man I love that group! Haha… Only $14.99 on iTunes right now too, for all you fans out there…. (Says the guy who just bashed MP3s)

Misses this week:

  • I got another dang speeding ticket :( 42 in a 25. And pretty much in the same freakin’ place as I ALWAYS get one whenever I head into DC, arghhh… I literally only go there like once every few months, but now I’m gonna be freaked out about it because I just don’t want to get caught again! Haha… not that I ever notice how fast I’m going *anyways* in certain parts of town – I’m sure you all have pockets like that too, where you just assume the zones are higher than they are? This 25 area I keep getting dinged at is like a mini highway! Jeez…  bye-bye another $40 of mine :(
  • I left a bag of groceries out and it spoiled! Fastest way to lose some money right there, boys and girls… Though luckily this time around it was only about $10 worth of perishables, and not the whole shebang! Still – that’s $10 flushed down the toilet due to my lack of paying attention and A.D.H.D. To top it off it then meant we couldn’t have my beloved grilled cheese sandwiches that night cuz of the lack of (fresh) cheese :( Booooooooooo….

So pretty much I ended up even at the end of this week :) All my smarts wiped away from all my dumbness, haha… I’m sure you can relate? Who else has some tails of woes or wisdom from the week? Let’s share ’em again like we did last time!

Wow for 17 over you’re pretty lucky a) the ticket was in DC and not VA and b) it was only $40. Did Virginia get rid of that crazy law for insane reckless driving (over 15 the speed limit) fines? I know some people were saying it was unconstitutional.

I scored a gig doing some formatting on an academic paper this week. Definitely a hit!

Leaving your perishables out definitely sucks. I’m always so paranoid about it. It’s been a long time since I left groceries out, but sometimes my husband and I mis-communicate about who’s putting away the dinner leftovers. Nothing sadder than waking up in the morning to find the food you were going to eat for lunch still sitting out on the stove. :(

You were driving 17mph over and only got a $40 ticket? That’s insane. That ticked would probably be $300+ in Florida!

I think that ticket is going to cost more than $40 isn’t it?

Small back story, I got one somewhat recently right as I turned 25. I ALWAYS heard that at 25 your insurance prices should drop drastically. Well last year I was up for renewal and checking everybody’s prices and they were pretty much the same as last year, no big drop.

I ended up talking to an agent from one of the companies and of course told him about my ticket, then wondered out loud how much that ticket effected my payments, so he re-put in all my information minus the ticket and it was a few hundred bucks cheaper for 12 months.

I was stopped by a policeman a few weeks back.
“Do you know how fast you were going?”
“46 in a 30 zone?” I figured they don’t stop you for just 5-10 over.
“No, you were doing 50 in a 25”
    “Aren’t you a Sudbury Policeman?”
    “Yes”
“We’re in Concord. You mean it’s not like the movies, where if you get over the border to Mexico, the police stop at the border?”
For a minute he thought I was serious. Then realized it was a bad joke. And let me go. He said the speed limit went to 40, but I drove through a 25 way too fast and to be careful. Saved about $250, I believe.

@Lance @ Money Life and More – Oh yeah, I got caught on the camera which is ALWAYS better than getting pulled over and spanked by the police ;) I’m not sure about that rule in VA, but I know I once got caught doing that too but the cop did me a favor and reported the mileage at 14 instead – he was great!
@Erin – Awww, yeah that stinks too :( The same thing happens over here every now and then as well. CONGRATS on your new gig though! That’s wonderful news!
@Mrs. Pop @ Planting Our Pennies – Only cuz it was a camera one and not the *real* police! I def. need to quit freakin’ doing it though :(
@Justin – Wowwwwwwww… yeah I was gonna say, it should DEF drop at 25! It’s one of those myths that thankfully is true :) You’ll be doing great once it’s wiped away though and the time expires. Then as you get even older like me, it’ll drop so much you won’t even notice! haha…. well, as long as you’re driving a beater like me too ;)
@JoeTaxpayer – Woahhhhh nicely done, sir! I bet it was because you told him you were gonna blog about him though, huh? You can tell us the truth here ;)

It’s been a ton of ups and downs lately. BUT I know that in the next couple of weeks (after the big move THIS WEEKEND) things will go back to “normal” for me. Which is exciting. The downside is that MOVING IS EXPENSIVE. Then on top of it my mom got laid off this week. While it doesn’t affect me directly since I don’t live with my parents anymore, it just makes my heart hurt for her. I can’t wait until all of this spending is done. However, I’ll be getting the deposit from my old apartment back soon, I got my $50 rebate from T-mobile this week in the form of a debit card, and my old cable company OWES me money! :D

    Not too bad.
I sold the crib for $50 on Craigslist. It was just taking up a lot of room.

I got charged $10 for not maintaining a minimum daily balance at Chase. I called and got the $10 back and closed the account. :)

Dang sorry for the speeding ticket. A month ago I got one for going 42 in a 45, yeah 42. It was a .1 mile construction zone, with one sign, no workers and I only went that way to go to the library. At least it wasn’t a double fine zone, but the cop said it wasn’t big enough for them to legally do that. Yeah, I ask questions even while getting a ticket ha! Glad he was cool about it. It was a harsh ticket though because it was $143.00 and a full 4 points because of the city I was in. I added that city to my no visiting list.

I bet my hubby would love your whole record collection! He has collected them since a child. Our first date together, we went and purchased one. Fun times :) (Wow that makes me feel old, it wasn’t a new record lol.)

    Hits for me:
Homework, homework and more homework! I am just very happy to be in school finally!

Took a trip to bury my cat at my mom’s house and found some very cool deals on much needed household items and other things- SCORE!

Free coffee today @ 7-11. Not the best, but since I will be doing more homework, coffee is coffee right now. It might not be a good thing that the 7-11 is .5 miles from my front door. :)

    Misses:
Had to take a 12 hour (one-way) road trip to bury my cat. I can’t say I like road trips any more at this moment

I am STILL getting random bills for my hubby’s hospital stay, so every bill we have to call and make sure the check wasn’t in the mail at the time. Then we have to ask what it’s for and blah blah blah. One even sent us a refund when they were supposed to apply it. Frustrating!

    Hits
-$1000 check from my mortgage company for over-estimating taxes this year (which I told them in the first place but they wouldn’t adjust it then)
-mortgage payment dropping $100 for 2013, yay, quicker pay off.
    -Sold 2 cars on craigslist!

    Misses
-Fell at a store in August (their fault, proven) and they’re only putting $501 towards my medical expenses, which exceed $879 so far. :( So unfriendly.
-Have to visit with my in laws this weekend. :( :( :(

Your speeding tickets are much nicer up there! My husband got one for going 15 over and we had to pay $388!!

Argh, bummer about the speeding ticket! I was going through that same thing only with street sweeping parking tickets. Luckily that hasn’t happened since February. And I’ve totally done that grocery thing too. It’s a pain because now you probably have to go back and get the same groceries again!

Only $40 for the speeding ticket? Count your blessings my friend.

Yay for the new album! Sorry about the groceries…I have done that so many times. The absolute worst was the time I specifically went out for bread, milk, and bananas. I ended up leaving the bags out and the milk went bad. Two trips for the exact same thing…kicking myself the whole way…

Hubby got a ticket in DC in February….it was $125!!!! It was a camera shot, and I think it was 18 miles over. How did you get away with $40????

OH NO Jay, not another ticket. I once had so many tickets (not for speeding) and I didn’t feel that I should pay them because they were not my fault. But I actually had my license revoked until I paid every cent in full.

I hit some writing projects this week while my daughter hit a $50 cash, a birthday gift from my auntie. I missed the deadline of a client. He did not tell me that he needed the article within the day he sent the assignment. Bad.

How is the album (Mumford and Sons)? I am always eyeing their new album but don’t dare to buy it. Instead I bought P!nk new album. LOL I don’t like all Mumford songs but I am still their fan. Let me know if it is worth the money.

@Emmy – Ouch, that does suck for your mom :( Sorry to hear, my friend. Hope the moving goes smoothly and you’re nice and settled in soon! I’ve always found the whole thing exciting – esp. if you’re going to someplace new :)
@Fern – Haha… good guesses! But it was right off Georgia :)
@Joe @ Retire By 40 – There you go! Isn’t that awesome how EASY it is to nix those fines by just making a simple phone call? Way to go my man, that’s top notch personal finance right there ;) (Though, I suppose you also weren’t paying attention to the account in the FIRST place so maybe it evens out? Haha…)
@LB – What?? You were going too slow??? That’s crazy cuz the speeding limits are the MAX you’re technically supposed to go, not the slowest! I guess if you were holding up people or causing trouble though it was needed, haha… that’s exactly what you were doing too, huh? ;) Sorry to hear about your cat too, that’s never fun. Esp. driving that far to do some burial action :( He/she is up in the heavens with ours!
@Angella – Woahhh you’ve got a TON of action last week! Congrats on all that awesome money hits though, that’s great!! Whic hopefully makes up for the nasty fall and in-laws time :( Hope you have only *hits* this week around! Stay safe! (And WOW $388 for a tkt is a lot!! Mine was only a speeding *camera* so I got super lucky. Haven’t been physically pulled over by the cops (knock on wood) in a long time. And hopefully it stays that way!)
@Budget & the Beach – Exactly! Paying double for the exact same food, ugh… At least I haven’t made the same mistake twice just yet ;) I’m on a one-week roll! Haha…
@Kevin Vesga – For sure. Much better to be caught via speeding camera than an actual cop!
@Stephanie @ The Empowered Dollar – Heck yeah it is! Listening to it now for a good 30th time in a row or something close, haha… they’re so relaxing :)
@Crystal @ Get A Copywriter – It blows, right? Totally pisses you off…
    @Mysti – Wow, really? From a camera?? Man, I don’t know then… ours was from a camera too :(
@Kristina – HAH! I can’t believe you tried to get away from those, haha… I bet they revoked your license! You should blog about it sometime if you haven’t already ;) And stay safe out there, friend!
@Cherleen @ My Personal Finance Journey – Well, not much you can do about a client not telling you something! Hopefully it won’t ruin your relationship or futur deals :)
@Bryan – Glad you like them, thanks for telling me :)
@Aloysa @ My Broken Coin – Well I’m a bad person to ask cuz I LOVE LOVE LOVE their stuff. So I’ll be buying every single album of theirs without even listening to them first ;) Not all songs are the awesomest, but there are very few artists which I could play in the background 24/7 and not get bored of them… Esp while working. I’m constantly streaming them, or artists like them, while blogging every day. Soothes the soul! :)
