This is a tough one, indeed. Here’s the email I got from a fellow reader of BudgetsAreSexy. Take a gander, and then leave your thoughts/advice below? Thanks!

I’m a real pickle, and my Google skills do not have me any closer to solving it. :)

I made a really awful decision. At 21 I walked into the Ford dealership and signed $18k of my life away for a Ford Fusion. I paid far too much for it, the Carfax has a ding on it, and I can’t afford it. It took me quite a while to realize it though! (Also, my grandparents co-signed for it.) I can make a million excuses, but what I have the most of is REGRET.

Now, I know– kick myself in the rear and never make that mistake again. But that doesn’t help this 2 ton anchor weighing me down!

Right now (23) I pay $346 per month on said vehicle, and I pay $200 in insurance every month (damn you Michigan and your high auto insurance rates!). J, let’s be real here — I’m still in college and I make about $25k/year. I can’t afford this in any way/shape/form.

What is worse is I can’t find a way out and I’m starting to feel mighty desperate. I don’t even have much credit, and my debt to income ratio is so high I can’t get approved for a card or loan independently. I by no means have the resources to come up with even a few thousand dollars cash– right now I’m very much paycheck to paycheck and my savings account is at $10. There isn’t anyone who can lend me any money. I also was unemployed for six months last year and have an eviction on my credit report.

Is there any way out there to get a little breathing room? I’ve thought about trading my Fusion in for a car worth 5k or so– but from what I can tell, most dealers won’t allow you to trade in a car for less than the one you want to buy.

I’m trying to desperately hard to be financially responsible! But between the high car payments and the rest of life, I can barely keep up much less get ahead. This car payment is the amount of RENT in my area, and I’m crashing with my grandparents 35 miles away from work and driving in every day because I simply can’t afford to even rent a room.

I apologize for the sob story, but if you get a moment to think on this and have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it!

OUCH. The first thing that came to my mind was to advise her on getting ANOTHER job. I don’t care what it is, but *anything* will help to reduce this massive amount of debt and stress (or even yet, get a *better* job). It’s obviously not optimal as a student who already has some sort of a gig going on, but luckily we’re given 24 hours in a day to max out as much as we need to, come hell or high water. And since she didn’t mention it specifically one way or the other, maybe there’s room here to get some more income going? (Check out some of our side hustles for good ideas)

The other option she touched on was possibly trading in her car, but I think she’s right in that you usually can’t do so for a much lower valued vehicle. Though you could always sell it and take the loss, then try and get another one right after? At a much smaller cost? It wouldn’t be easy of course, but it’s definitely doable.

Those are the best 2 options I see – what about you? Have you ever been in this predicament before? What would YOU do if you were here? (I know it’s hard without having all the facts and/or knowing anything about the reader whatsoever, haha, but do your best ;)). At the very least she’ll have more to think on, and hopefully get pumped up enough to get out there and make it happen!

Thanks guys, you’re awesome :)

—————-

Let’s talk about cars today. What kinds you’re driving, what kinds of money you’re spending – all that good stuff. It’s been a while since I’ve shared the love for my Caddy (the last post wasn’t so hot) so this one’s for all you car lovers out there. Round 7 of Five For Friday starts now, bitch! ;)

What car are you sportin’? (If you have two, tell us about both. If you have three, what do you do for a living??)

How much did you pay for it?

How much is it worth NOW? (Hit up KBB if you don’ t know)

How much do you pay for insurance? (you can guestimate)

Why did you choose that one in particular?

*BONUS* Your car gets totaled, and insurance gives you $25,000 for a new car. What would you get? (You have to spend the money on a car, you can’t spend it on debt or savings or anything – nice try ;))

As always, your master of ceremonies will go first:

My car:1993 Cadillac Deville. Cherry red w/ fake-top convertible and tan leather interior. Big Ballin’ baby! (If I were ever to shop at Whole Foods, I’d be blaring rap like that video above too! But sadly they’re too expensive for my blood, and my boat of a car would never fit in their parking spots).

Price of my car: $3,100, bargained down from $3,400 – which was previously dropped down from $5,000 (It was pimped out w/ stereos, flat-screen navs, the works.) We stripped it all except for the exhaust and remote-start engine, and then I slapped it on my credit card (I used one of those checks they send you). USAA was having a special that month, and since my interest rate was so low anyways, it was MUCH cheaper for me to use my credit card than actually take out a loan! Haha… and of course I didn’t want to touch my cash reserves just yet ;) So I paid it off within 6 months I believe, and paid a mere 3.4% the entire time. Pretty crazy.

Value now: $2,695. Which includes swapping out a tape deck w/ a cd player ;) Haha… Not too shabby after owning it for 3 years!

Insurance: $42.00 :) The perks of driving ghetto and having a clean record!! That, and not being 21 anymore – haha… Oh, and my deductibles are $200 per event.

Why I picked it: Cuz it’s dope! And it’s old! So I don’t have to worry about scratches or dents or anything else that used to freak me out when I owned a newer car :) And having no car payments is just heavenly.

*Bonus*: Well first, that would be bananas cuz my car isn’t even worth a TENTH of that, haha… But I’d happily take it and go out and buy a barely used (we’re talking 6 months here) Mercedes C300 Sport. Arctic White and heavy on the sex appeal ;) I’d then pay the rest I owe out of pocket and finally have my dream car. Well, my “somewhat achievable dream car” I should say. I’d take a Ferrari over that any day.

YOUR TURRRRRRRRRRRRRRN! Whatcha riding, and whatcha paying for it?

————
(Shout out to Sarah for forwarding over that vid above – hilarious!)

Woah! One of my deer friends (haha, get it?) just emailed me this below. Take a gander and then let’s help her out! :)

SOOOOO remember about 1.5 years ago when I sent you a question about my grandfather buying me a car and how to handle it etc. etc.

WELL… I totaled another one.

A deer decided to try and kiss me while I was going 40mph down the road. She was unsuccessful in the kiss, but was successful in destroying my vehicle.

So now I’m in the market for another car. And this time I’m doing it on my own. I have $3600 to work with after they take out the $500 deductible.

My question is: given my history, my budget, and my current debt payoff/savings plan… how should I go about finding a new car? I’m not really sure where to begin.

Do you have any readers that specialize in this stuff? Any car experts? Anyone else with a crazy car murdering history like me?

Any help you can give me would be fabulous and much appreciated!

My fallback answer here is always Craigslist. I’ve bought or sold the last 4 cars of mine on CL alone, and if you have the patience you can usually find what you’re looking for. I can’t stand going into dealerships (used or new) cuz their sales teams always drive me up the damn wall! There’s nothing worse than fake nice people… well, okay, there are – like mean-to-your face people – but you get what I’m saying. It’s like strippers winking at you just to get you to think you’re special. You’re not! They just want your dirty money! :) Haha…

I’ve also had relatively good success w/ eBay, but usually only selling cars, not buying. In fact this one time (in band camp), I actually sold a car that wouldn’t even start! It was missing an entire cylinder, but someone out there STILL wanted it! Haha… the guy paid me $1,000 in cash, and then fixed it all up and gave it to his teenage son :) Just goes to show ya never know unless you give it a good try.

So that’s my boring answer to your car conundrum. Hit up Craigslist or eBay to start the search. But what would you guys do in her spot? Would LOVE to hear more creative ways myself for whenever I need a new (to me) car too!! And since I like to go either real big, or real small, the $3600 price range is right up my alley as well :) What do you have for <del>her</del> us?

—————
PS: Also? Get deer alerts for your car!

My poor caddy is a beast. I love her to death, but man she’s getting old. 18 years into her prime and she’s just not as peppy as she once was! *tear*

We went to the doctors the other day (National Tire and Battery), and she’s now a proud owner of a brand new heart (battery). It seemed she was trying to tell me something last week when we got stranded in Applebee’s parking lot and I dismissed it for a cough. I also found out that I am no good at asking strangers to give me a jump! Not only is it embarrassing for some reason, but I also just feel bad imposing on others :( Turns out my wife is pretty good at it, though ;)

So that was $120 out of nowhere. And there’s other signs of deterioration starting to show more too: random lights are popping up here and there now, my radio doesn’t like to turn off anymore, the transmission fluid continues to leak faster and faster, and I’m just wondering how much longer we’ve got here. Oh, and the gas it’s costing me lately? WAWA WOOEY! I literally spent $60 to fill up last week! Sixty! Another con of ridin’ in style, haha… <del datetime="2011-03-29T03:46:54+00:00">my friends</del> <del datetime="2011-03-29T03:46:54+00:00">family</del> <del datetime="2011-03-29T03:46:54+00:00">wife</del> everyone pretty much thinks my whip is ghetto, but I don’t think they know what they’re talking about. You ask any grandpa out there and they’ll tell you how luxurious these Caddys are ;) Just sucks they sip on the champagne of gas – good ol’ Premium. Currently hovering around $4.00 a pop.

As sad as things are though, I just can’t get out there and start looking around yet. The idea of starting over and having car payments again is NOT my idea of fun anymore. And as many of you know, there’s a 50/50 chance I’ll say F it and go buy that Benz I’ve always wanted for the last 5 years now ;) Which you can’t let me do!! As you’ve seen from yesterday’s post, I’m not in the most secure spot to be allowing for such luxuries – even though I rode around in one yesterday and was reminded of just how much I LOVE ‘em! One of these days I tell ya, one of these days!

But for now, we keep doing our thang. We drive that puppy right into the ground, and just pray we got a lot more years outta her. It may be annoying at times (and also, perhaps, a bit unsafe depending on your gender) but if you don’t mind the inconveniences, you’ll be rewarded handsomely in savings ;) Know what I’m saying?

Any of y’all currently going through some car buying action? Anyone get stranded and will never ride to the very end again?

Remember the other month when I thought I was gonna have to retire my Caddy? Because I failed emissions and some jerk store told me it was going to cost $3,000 to fix? Well yeah, they were wrong.

Which brings us to today’s topic: MAKE SURE TO GET 2nd OPINIONS! Especially when you have no idea about whatever it is that’s broken.

And when it comes to car stuff, I’ll be the first to admit I SUCK at it. I’m pretty much like the opposite of a guy in this department. Things start squeaking and I freak out. Not because I think it’ll explode or anything like that (it can’t explode, right?), but I’m just always afraid something huge is broken and it’ll cost me like $5,000 to fix :( So what usually happens is I keep on driving and ignoring the problems until I’m physically unable to do so any more – AKA the car STOPS. Haha… Or in this case I fail emissions, and am forced to rectify it.

But anyways, after being told that it was gonna cost me $3,000 at one shop to fix 100% (there was like 3 things wrong according to them), I finally owned up and decided to call around just to be sure. It was super annoying and I honestly *hate* doing it with a passion, but there was no way I was going to shell out more money than the car was worth just to pass a stupid test. ESPECIALLY since MD has this waiver you can get once you cross over the $450 payment mark (so you don’t do exactly that – spend more on the car than it’s worth). Of course, it should have been a clear warning sign when body shop #1 didn’t even bring it to my attention!

So I hit up two other places – the shop my family uses a few hours away, and the shop my wife’s family uses 45 mins away. But instead of taking in the car to both places – wasting lots more hours and money to inspect it all over again – I just faxed over the paperwork from body shop #1 (sneaky sneaky!) and had them take a look and get back to me with pricing ;) And here’s what they said:

Mechanic #2: $1,300 to fix everything. That already cut down the price in half! Wtf? But even more impressively, they recommended just fixing 1 of the things first (an oxygen sensor) and some other tiny things like an air filter and something else I can’t recall, so that I can make it over that $450 total cost in hopes I’d qualify for the Emissions Waiver :) And then if I didn’t, of course, I’d have to take it back and fix the other stuff.

Mechanic #3: $1,000ish to fix everything, and also brought up waiver information. Only problem with this one was that they were hours away and would be a pain to get fixed there.

So what did I do? I used mechanic #2 and spent the additional $200 more to cross the waiver limit, and then took the ol’ Caddy out for another inspection! And you know what happened? I freakin’ passed!!!! I didn’t even have to go for the waiver! haha… man, talk about being in shock. I honestly thought I’d have to fight w/ the waiver people to make sure I was in the clear. But that measly oxygen sensor did the trick! And I didn’t have to shell out $3,000 either. Freakin’ rip-offs.

So please, if you find yourself in a similar situation – either with car troubles or hospital stuff or dentist stuff, etc (basically anything big & expensive) – get a 2nd and/or 3rd opinion! It may take a little more time to do the research but it can literally save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. in the end. Just because we’re not experts in the field, doesn’t mean we can’t be experts at saving money ;)

And everyone was freaking out and saying it was the death of SUVs and get ready for $10/gallon? Hahahahaha….

Oh man, our society is so crazy sometimes. I haven’t heard a peep about our dependency on oil in over 2 years now. (Watch, next week it explodes in my face and we’re back at $60 fill-ups again!)

But I will say that it’s good to think about all these “what ifs” every now and then. I mean, what if everyone was right? Could you imagine budgeting in $80, $90, or $150 on 1 tank of gas? I tell you one thing, I’d be getting rid of that Caddy ASAP. The thing guzzles 16 gallons for breakfast – all premium gas too! Doesn’t even matter that it’s a ’93, it’s considered “luxury” baby. Ghetto and luxury, my favorite concoction ;)

Some other things possibly worth questioning:

What if you lost all your investments in the stock market? Do you have any money stored anywhere else? Like a bank or in your safe or in your backyard?

What if your entire family lost their jobs at the same time? Would you be able to live off your emergency fund for a while? Do you even HAVE an emergency fund? (please say yes).

What if you bought that $600 dress? Are you willing to cut back in other areas to still stay on budget? (There’s nothing wrong with spending lots of money on clothes or vacations or fancy iPhones btw, just as long as you’re saving in other areas of your life instead)

And more importantly, what if you could never Facebook again?! (I keed, I keed!)

Lots of things that may never happen in our lifetime, but all good things to think about. Even if just for a minute. Gas may not be at $20/gallon now, and global warming may not really kill us for another 2,000 years, but nothing’s ever impossible in this wild world of ours. Better to be prepared just a tiny bit than 100% caught off guard.

Which reminds me, I gotta start test driving Ferraris. There’s a chance I might win the lottery tonight!

I used to keep a lot of stuff in my car – mostly junk. The new me, though, is new & improved and I try to keep only what I truly need in there. Here are 5 of these bad boys below. There are others too, of course, but these are the ones that always seem to save me. Either in money or frustration :) Pay attention!

A handful of $1 bills. Coins would do too, but really only if we’re talking quarters. I like to keep 5 or 6 dollar bills on hand just in case of an emergency. And for tolls, yard sales, homeless donations, must have slurpees, an extra gallon of gas, you get the picture.

Anything you need to return or donate. I talked about this on my one and only radio appearance last Christmas, but basically these all go in the trunk to make sure you actually DROP THEM OFF. If you’re anything like me you always remember to do this sorta stuff when you’re driving. Usually right past the store ;)

Bed Bath & Beyond coupons! (Or any other kind that come in handy - like those entertainment books you all seem to like so much :)) You’ll never forget to save 20% again! Also, those “buy 10 lunches get the 11th FREE” cards are smart to keep there too. Us guys don’t have the luxury of toting around purses.

A backpack w/ extra set of clothes – You won’t believe the number of times this comes in handy. In fact, I need to start doing this again because I’ve been out of practice so long! Other things to keep in the bag: toothpaste, tooth brush, deodorant (could all be travel sized), and socks. Can never have too many extra socks laying around.

One “Power CD”. The one that makes you feel all kinds of confident and jovial no matter what mood you’re in! This is very important. Sometimes you just need to blast some tunes and tell the whole world you’re coming (especially if there are some fine ladies nearby). Note: Justin Bieber won’t cut it. Justin Timberlake, however, will. “I’m bringin’ budgets back (Yup!), them other boys don’t know how to ac (Yup!)”

I think that about covers it. Am I missing anything? Sometimes I like to keep hand sanitizer around for when my donuts and coffee spill everywhere (Oh, napkins are good ideas too!) but other than that I keep the ride pretty bare necessitied (new word). Cars just get cluttered so fast, ya know?

Some ideas from my Twitter friends:

(I couldn’t help it – they’re so smart!)

Hopefully these will spark some ideas for what YOU’d feel comfortable with! As long as alcohol isn’t one of them, I think you’ll be set. But remember, no Bieber.

Top secret until I spill it all here, of course ;) As I mentioned on Sunday, the USAA crew flew a handful of us bloggers out there to give us a sneak peak on some of their new products. And let me tell you, USAA Headquarters = WOW. That place is PIMP! Like, the Google Complex on financial crack! Haha… (you can find my pictures here)

And I gotta admit, I was feelin’ pretty V.I.P. up in there. Nothing like an all expense paid trip to the mothership to get me giggling like a little school girl ;) Truth be told it felt like home too.

Not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this before or not, but I’m a proud product of the Marine Corps family (Hooh-Rah!) and it’s been a good 10+ years since I’ve been around all that military talk. I miss it so much! When you’ve grown up immersed in it throughout 15+ moves – all around the world – it’s kinda hard to shake (and settle down for that matter). So it was pretty cool being around it again this week w/ all the military spouse bloggers that were invited along with us PF guys (Hank from Military Money Might and Ryan from Cash Money Life – who we couldn’t decide if he looked more like Justin Timberlake or old school Pacey from Dawson’s Creek, haha…) While USAA now serves non-military folks too (almost their entire banking products, not insurance), they really are becoming the provider of choice for the military community.

And before you even think it, I am not getting paid or forced to write any of this :) I honestly truly believe that USAA is the best financial institution out there or else I wouldn’t have my entire financial life with them: 15 total accounts! It’s rare finding an institution that actually CARES about their members and keeps rockin’ customer support as they do (which is HUGE for me as you know).

But back to the top secret products coming out. I’m calling it now that these tools are gonna change the way we find cars and houses in the future, and I’ll even bet on it ;) Here’s what they’ve got cooking over there:

Auto Circle: Find, Finance, and Insure

This is pretty bad ass. They’ve basically created a tool where you can do EVERYTHING you need while car shopping – both online and via iPhone/Droid. You can search for cars you like (kinda like Autotrader or Carmax), scan the ranges of prices people have actually PAID for these cars (along with MSRPs, dealer costs, available discounts, etc) and then literally lock in a price if everything looks good to you.

USAA came up with this price guarantee certificate that you can take to your local dealership in USAA’s network, or even use it to negotiate the price off other places in your area. And if you’re a fan of GMCs or Mercedes, you’ll even get some extra cash back – which will come in handy to you know who ;)

And after you’re done finding the car? You can then secure financing AND Insurance in the same freakin’ spot. So awesome! You can find, finance, and insure a car all within 20 mins if you were on a mission ;) And if you’re qualified for that last part too (their insurance) – although you can certainly use their tools to get the deals and financing and then get insured elsewhere if you like!

Auto Circle can be found starting August 4th here: http://AutoCircle.com

USAA Home Circle

Similar to Auto Circle, this is USAA’s new home finding tool. Kinda like your very own MLS system w/ all the pics and info available to realtors out there. You can search through thousands of listings, compare specs, and learn about financing rates & costs all at the same time. Making it pretty damn efficient! And great for getting ballpark ideas too if you’re only in the mod to window shop ;)

I think that’s what I like most about this new stuff coming out – they’re giving us the TOOLS to get all this information and then we can do with it as we will! Even if we never use USAA!

Home Circle will be found here starting August 4th: http://HomeCircle.com

USAA Money Manager

This is actually already live already but I hadn’t had a chance to blog about it yet. Similar to Mint, this tool will categorize your expenses and deposits giving you an overall screen shot of your financial picture (even if you don’t go in and categorize them, USAA will take educated guesses so you can get a good sense right from the start where your money’s going). And I’ve been told they specifically did NOT call this a “budget tool” because people are afraid of that word! The shame! THE SHAME! I bet if they called it the “sexy budget tracker” people would be flocking to it even more ;)

Deposit @ Home and Deposit @ Mobile

These guys are live too, and you’ve probably seen me pimping it out on Twitter before cuz it’s just so freakin’ cool! and easy! and fast!!! For those who don’t have iPhones or Droids, computer scanners also work to deposit your checks instead of having to mail them in like the good ol’ days.

And guess what else? USAA’s workin’ on new ways to deposit CASH too down the road!!! Which is huge if you’re already a member and had to open up accounts elsewhere because of this even though you didn’t want to ;)

Brat Connect

Okay, not financially related at all but I HAD to include this here because I’m a brat myself. And us brats like to connect and find our other lost brat friends over the years from all that constant movin’ and shakin’ ;) And very smartly they’re making this a Facebook app – where many a brats are already looking for each other. This Brat Connect guy will be ready August 23rd.

UPDATE: The Brat Connect app is now live!

That about covers it! Hopefully I didn’t bore you with overpowering USAA love. You’ll find many of us members are pretty hardcore about ‘em ;) And I just wanna share them with as many people as will listen! They truly are on top of their $hit. Unlike the dirty dirty Bank of America (*shiver*).

So look out friends! They’re cookin’ up some game changing tools out there, and they may be worth a shot if you haven’t considered them before. ‘Till next time,

You know how people say things happen in threes? Well, it seems to be true with my not-so-pimpin’ Caddy these days. I love it to death, but sometimes it can really frustrate me. Is that what having kids is like? ;)

The wrath of the money guzzler:

1) I got a $40 speeding ticket. I know, not my car’s fault but I’m still blaming it! ;) Luckily it wasn’t a “real” speeding ticket though, in that one of those secret parked vans caught me on tape (literally, they sent me the pics!). Unluckily, however, it was in my own neighborhood which means I now get nervous every time I leave and come home. I guess my “under 15 miles over” theory doesn’t hold anymore…and that I also don’t listen to my own advice on breaking the law!

2) My registration renewal is now due ($128). Again, not any fault of my Caddy’s of course but it still sucks. Especially when you hear the next nonsense I’m about to spill…

3) We failed the emissions inspection! ($450+?). This one blows the most First, because it means I have to pay a mechanic to find out WHERE the problem is exactly, and second because I then have to pay for it to be FIXED! If it can even be fixed! (at almost 20 years old, my ride’s starting to near retirement) Luckily, however, once you hit $X amount in mechanic fees the great state of Maryland can sometimes (always?) grant you a waiver. That way you don’t dish out $2,000 for a car that’s barely even worth it! On the down side, that $X amount of money comes to $450 bucks…good thing we don’t have car payments!

So right now I pretty much hate owning a car ;) I wish I could say I don’t need one or that getting a new car would fix all of this, but the truth is there’s always going to be something. Which is yet another reason why keeping an emergency fund filled up is smart! Dipping into our $10k would be much less stressful than having to come up with it all on the fly. But we’ll see what happens.

For now, we’re just gonna brace for the worst and hope everything gets fixed and/or waived for no more than $450 (we’re still waiting on the results). I’ll keep ya posted! And I hope your cars are in much better shape than mine ;) This stuff is no fun…

When your car starts breaking, you actually don’t mind paying to fix it! :)

I just dropped $270 on new tires and alignment and it is a-okay in my books, friends. The longer I can keep my ’93 Caddy on that road means the more money I can sock away until I have to get a new one! And believe me, I’ve been tempted like a mother lately to buy a Benzie latley (a C300 to be exact) – I gotsta watch my self.

But I know that if my Caddy is alive and running just fine, I would be a nut job to pick up a $20-$30k tab just to roll around more sexily. I really couldn’t justify that. Now, if it broke down completely and I had a little somethin’ somethin’ saved up on the side for this newer car (and I just may, ya never know!), we’d be singing a whole other tune.

But right now it ain’t happening. I’ve got a 17 year old car humming along nicely, and every month I reckon I save at least $500 big ones (the old car payment I used to have from my Toyota Highlander – y’all remember that? When I tried selling an SUV in the middle of “HATE ON SUVS” season & $4/gallon gas? Haha…). That thing cost me at least $400 alone in interest payments, and I’m just not ready to jump back in again.

So while I really really REALLY want a Benz or whatever other car grabs my attention that month, I just gotta remember that NO car payments is financially better than $500 car payments. And I say “financially better” because I know we’re all human and sometimes we just have to give into guilty pleasures every now and then. At least that’s what I’ll be telling myself the day I pick up that C300 ;)

How are you guys rollin’ these days? Whatcha driving, and whatcha paying for it?
