The $200 Chippmunk Giveaway!

[That would be $200 in *money* we’re giving away, fyi – not a chipmunk valued at $200 :)]

Hidey ho, neighbors! We haven’t done a giveaway in quite some time, so when the fine folks at Chippmunk.com reached out – a new coupon site – I happily accepted their offer to give one of you lucky bastards chipmunks some cash :)

You’re welcome.

Sooooo…. let me first tell you a little about these guys, and then we shall get to the giveaway rules/entry methods. And you’ll be happy to know they help differentiate themselves from the other players in the game by one simple variable we all know around here as “budgeting.” Woohoo!

In fact, let me just show you in pictures rather than explain everything which is kinda boring:

chippmunk step 1 search

chippmunk step 2 discover

chippmunk step 3 shop

They have 3 main tenants they strive for too:

  1. Save consumers time by making it easy to assess the best deals from related stores
  2. Save consumers money by publishing only valid, working coupons and offers (that would be nice!!)
  3. Help consumers discover new places to shop

It’s that 2nd one that I like a lot ‘cuz man do a lot of them blow in that department… I mean, makes sense since stores and discounts are changing 24/7, but still – when over half you click don’t work it doesn’t make you want to come back time and time again… But I digress.

The point: Chippmunk is a new coupon company out there trying to relate the best to customers. You’ll have to check it out and see for yourself whether they’re doing a good job of it or not :)

I love how it has the days best coupons front and center. The search by budget is also a nice feature. One thing I first thought when checking out the website – it seems kind of “busy” (alot going on). That was really the only bad thing I could find.

I like how it has the option to sort by destination. Although lots of companies do ship to Canada, I have been burned – doing a 1/2 hr of shopping to realize I can’t actually place my order. This sort feature is very handy!!
I agree with Jaimie, the site is a bit busy, but it’s pretty well organized.

I like the idea of “Today’s Best Coupons” (under the assumption that these actually change at some frequency), but 7 of the 8 shown were for sites or companies I would never use. It would be cool if these were customized based on a person’s viewing and spending history on the site.

I like that the site shows all discounts (like email sign up, veterans etc.), but I don’t see where I enter my budget. I selected a category and then it told me I had a $125 budget. Also, there is no technology section (I’m looking for a printer). I agree with the above posters that the site is a visual overload.

If I won the $200 I use it for expenses to start up my new tax business and to replace a couple sad garments that I’ve had for waaaayyy too long.

I like the budget option and I like the category search (I just tested it using the combo of pets and budget, since I intend to buy some pet meds soon). I always search for coupon codes after I already have stuff in the cart, seeing the codes at multiple stores before I shop (since for some stuff, I really don’t care where I get it from) is nice, and adding the budget means I won’t get to the cart, then find a coupon that makes me need to add some unnecessary catnip mice to to the order to get the “deal.”

The site’s layout is nice, of course I run the risk of then seeing “today’s best coupon” on the main site for some clothing store I didn’t need to be “window shopping” around in.

If I won the $200 it would probably be for fun Christmas “gifts” for myself and my husband (we don’t really do surprise gifts for each other anymore, and for Christmas we agreed to not do a formal exchange with each other since for our birthdays we gave each other large presents this year).

It’s nice to know sites like this exist (although it looks like you have to subscribe to really stay up-to-date with deals), but I guess I just don’t shop enough to really be enamored one way (positively) or the other (negatively).

But with $200 from then (ha!) I would put half toward Christmas gifts and half toward Students Loans.

The $200 would go to Christmas with hopefully some left over for groceries.

    1. I searched by department > toys. Set my budget at $25 because that is what I want to spend on a Christmas gift. I did enjoy everything being right there instead of searching the web for deals. I tried to select a different category from the results page, but nothing happened. Maybe a kink to be worked out?

    2. $200 is a lot to me right now. I would probably spend some of it on Christmas gifts and some of it on myself. My birthday is the day after this contest closes, so if I won, I’m thinking I would get myself some new boots I’ve had my eye on.

This is such a cool concept. I searched for chocolate coupons on their mobile site and was pleasantly surprised by how much came up. However, a) i couldn’t figure out how to adjust my budget and b) the “save $x” was a little weird – “Save $31” for “25% off sitewide” at Lindt chocolate. Oh, but i guess the “save” is based off budget, which is cool. Maybe $125 just shouldn’t be the default? I *wish* i had that much to spend! ;)

I should spend this on gifts in general so we don’t have to strain our budget so much at Christmas, but i would probably blow it on going to eat and then buying a much more kick-ass gift for my husband fhan i was going to.

“Money”…I share your pain with coupons that are no longer around. I just recently had this problem while searching for a propane coupon for the grill. Found plenty of offers but when you clicked….”no dice”. My plan was to get a $3 off on purchase coupon AND then send in for the $3 rebate…it appears this isn’t gonna happen. If the folks at Chipmunk can address this…they’ll be rich!
If I were to win the $200 … would put the money toward “major tuneup” on my 10 year old pick up that needs some TLC. Thanks for the offer!!

I like the layout of the website. It looks neat and organized the way it’s broken out into sections on the main page such as Today’s Best Coupons, How it Works, etc. It’s definitely a great feature to be able to search for a coupon based on your budget. Coupons such as “25% off when you spend $100” are my least favorite kinds of coupons, considering I typically was not planning on spending $100 to begin with, so it’s great that the budget feature will help to filter those types of coupons out.

After you search, the page is really really busy. The logos are tiny, so it’s hard for me to figure out what store is what (baby gap’s logo is minuscule text on a dark blue background) and then the coupons are themselves confusing. Save $25 = 20% off one item? Save $25, 20% off $100 Sitewide on first order on Welcome to Look.com? Just too much stuff going on.

I’d use the $200 on some new furniture.

The site looks like a good place to start if I don’t necessarily know where I want to shop. A lot of times I have a specific store in mind before I leave the house, so in that case I would just Google search for the specific store’s name. However, if I am just in the market for a more broad coupon, I will check it out!

    1) This is awesome! I really liked the ways you could narrow down your options according to payment time, arrival, shipping fees, etc. That way you could be sure you get what you WANT, but also what you NEED. Nothing is worse then finding a deal and they don’t accept the way you need to pay, or if you need it right away and they only do 14 day delivery or something. The way they have it organized is a big help!

    2) And I would probably save the money for Christmas shopping too!

It wasn’t until I hovered over the “find coupons…” buttons that I realized that I was being given 3 options to search. The word “or” btwn the buttons was only showing the top half of the word (browsing using IE7).

I was recently laid off, so $200 would really come in handy. I would most likely spend it on moving expenses. The job market for my skill set is not very good at my current location. I own a second home which I am renting out in another location, which has a much better job outlook for me. So we are tentatively planning to sell our current residence and move back to our old house after the holidays. I would just feel wrong about kicking out our tenants right before Christmas.

I can’t imagine using a site like Chippmunk, because I don’t really get it. I do shop online without encouragement, but once I am making a purchase, I will go to Coupon Cabin or the like to try to get the price of what I am going to buy down. I don’t look elsewhere, I don’t want to compare to another merchant. Just googling often gets me a discount. Now if Chippmunk had a discount on what I was buying and I found it there by googling, I’d use it. The Chippmunk website itself looks like an advertising site. Not interesting to me.

    1. The site has a good concept; I use similar coupon sites during research and purchase phases of online shopping. However, my initial reaction is “meh, this doesn’t hold my attention.” I saw retailers with whom I’m familiar, but from whom I wouldn’t purchase goods or services. Perhaps the site just isn’t relevant to me because I’m not actively in a research or purchase phase, and rather, I’m just looking at the site. This isn’t a place I’d go to just browse to kill time, but I might return if I had something specific in mind.

I agree with the previous posters that the layout, while it tries to be clean and simple, is visual overload. Unfortunately, images are what draws attention, so I’m not sure it’s something that can be helped.

The first time I entered the site, I was given a default budget of $125 once I clicked on the search page. I changed it to $10, scanned, then closed the page. Upon re-opening the site and selecting a new category, the budget defaulted to $1. I would recommend some consistency, whether it’s always the default value or the last entered value is saved in a session variable.

    2. I would use the $200 towards my first MBA class next semester.

I really like the filters that are available, and I totally wish I’d known about this yesterday, because there was a great coupon for a place I just shopped at ;-)

It wasn’t necessarily intuitive to use right away, and I think I’ll need to play around with it a bit to get the most out of the site, and to find the coupons that would work best for me. I do a lot of online shopping though, so this will turn into a valuable site.

I would appreciate more filters though…for example, when I look at clothing, many of these stores I don’t recongnize (so that’s cool, new stores), but then I wind up clicking into some that only sell baby/children items. Still not bad, but I had some jeans for myself in mind. It would be nice to know a little more about the stores up front. I don’t think this site exceeds the function of other bargain hunter sites personally. It has a nice interface, simple and easy, no registration required and no pesky emails. This may sound like a silly comment, but I don’t like the color scheme. I think it would be better if they separated the stores by color, like if you search for Halloween the box for deals in Costume Super Center is grey, but the box for all deals at buy costumes is ‘some other color.’ I think it would be easier to look at than the turquoise they choose for all deals. Either that or make the background of each box gray (or some other color) and keep the actual text boxes white rather than turquoise. I think that would work pretty well too.

Chippmunk Review: I like the “All Stores” option so I can peruse through to see what stores I could potentially find savings by using this site. Even though it has a good selection of merchants, it didn’t carry a couple of stores I shop at but hopefully that will change with time. Also, once I click on a store, I like the feature at the upper left hand corner, “competitor deals”, which allows one to see if a better offer exists elsewhere than the store you’re looking at. In addition to not carrying all the stores I shop at, the only other negative aspect of this store is that it doesn’t seem to offer great coupons/deals on popular sites like amazon and apple. But maybe it’s just timing and better deals are yet to arrive with time. A nice feature might be that you click to submit your email for your favorite stores and they email you when they have a new coupon available. I believe other sites do things like this so there’s definitely competition out there. But overall, it’s a great place to visit if you’re looking to browse for a great deal at a particular store or looking for a certain type of product.

Great concept, but the aesthetics of the site were a big downer. Kinda surprised! And I think small things like that make a big difference for shoppers (just ask the people who get paid to design the smell of high end hotels!) For instance, when I click on chocolate for a category, there are these huge horizontal pale blue buttons between every deal that interrupt an eye looking down a screen. And the logo of the company is so small in comparison I feel like I have to make a point to look for the logo for a deal. If each deal was a small square, translucent and prominently featured the logo (besides the percent off) it wouldn’t feel half so exhausting to peruse. 4 squares per row, or something like that. But great concept!

I find it weird when searching for a product that other products pop up. Example, searching for electronics, a deal for camera lenses pops up.

Not sure I would use the site, only because I could search for deals through google. I do, however, like when you search for a specific store, that it has a button to search competitor deals. Although, it only gave me the option to look at two stores the site thought was competition. It was missing the million of other stores / online stores like the one I was looking at.

I would actually use the $200 on me for once. I have no room for fun money, so it would be AWESOME to spend some on me finally.

I like the filter option which makes finding coupons a bit more convenient. The day’s best coupons is also a plus! The front page layout is a bit too busy for me but everything else is great!

    1) I love the competitor deals.
    2) I am totally boring and would use the $200 on groceries. That’s pretty much all we’re spending money on these days because we’re on budget lockdown.

It’s an interesting site, but I’d probably never use it. Honestly, I just don’t buy much! THere is also a lot going on on every page.

If I won the $200, I’d love to say I’d splurge on something fun, but in reality I’d probably spend it on something lame, like commuting costs. :(

I like the turquoise color. I would move the How It Works section and email sign up section closer to the top so the reader doesn’t have to look for them. Something about the middle section (2 rows) just seems congested.

    1) I love this idea, I’m always googling coupons or coupon codes but if it’s only for online shopping I won’t use it as much. Good to know if or when I do shop online.
    2) I’d use the extra money for everyday expenses.

I really like this site. It’s attractive, clean, and organized (I can’t stand a chaotic website… stresses me out). I like that there are no coupon codes to use AND I don’t have to sign up for anything. I didn’t see anything I really wasn’t a fan of – except that the window that opens up for the website linked to the coupon doesn’t have all the bars at the top, but I’m sure that’s my set-up, not theirs. :) Can’t wait to dive deeper and purchase some Christmas goodies!

Wasn’t sure if I should do this in a separate post, so – better safe than sorry! :)
I would use the $200 winnin’s to pay off the last of a medical bill – leaving us back down to School Loan, Mortgage, and a dastardly car loan to pay off. Determined more than ever to get right with the budget!

The thing that I like about the site is that it’s really easy to find the best coupon depending on what I’m willing to spend.

I like the budget aspect of it a lot. I also like that you can search for budgets for various stores in one place. I like the idea of the best coupons of the day in the middle of the page, but I’m unimpressed with what’s featured today in that area. I kind of wonder if they are making ad money by having certain coupons listed there. I searched under Target, one of my favorite stores, and saw “coupons” that I was already aware of and that weren’t exactly helpful. Notifications of sales are only so helpful.

I want my daughter to experience the local Santa train and other fun events like that this holiday season, but we just can’t afford that extra expense right now (my husband was laid off at the end of June and we’re now both looking for work and have been). So it would be nice to be able to have the money to do those things and make this Christmas memorable (and not in a we-couldn’t-afford-any-presents kind of way).

1: The most important aspect of a coupon type site is the validity of the codes, etc. I can’t really vouch for this yet for this site. After that, navigation is pretty key, being able to find what you want and are looking for. In this category, it does quite well. Coupons are easy to find and easy to compare. I’ll definitely be using this site in the future. :)

2: If I won the gift card there are so many things that I would love to do that would be selfish, but instead of all that I have a fun idea: My wife and I could put in fun ideas of things that we could either do together or as a family with our daughter. Put all the ideas in a hat and draw one at random and do that thing. Sounds like fun, right?
