What Haters Are Like

Tell me if you don’t know people like this…

I just paid off my debt! (You shouldn’t have had any to begin with)

I just invested in my first stock! (You need to diversify more)

I just saved for retirement! (Why? YOLO!)

Budgets are sexy! (No they’re not, they’re boring)

I just rode my bike to work! (You’re gonna get hit by a car one day!)

I just bought a used car! (It’s gonna break down, you know)

I  just bought insurance! (You would have been better off saving it)

I just saved $20.00 doing it myself! (My time is worth way more than that)

I just got a raise! (I just got two)

I just paid off my mortgage!! (You’re an idiot. If you had invested that money in an 18.19% yield over the past 10.3 years you would have had $128,173 more! And that’s without the stock splits!)

I’m about to retire early! (You’re not gonna know what to do with yourself)

I just became a billionaire! (You greedy bastard)

I just donated all my billions to charity! (You know they’re gonna use it for booze and crack)

Haters gonna hate, but you don’t have to.

Keep being your fiscal loving self!

“I just rode my bike to work” almost always prompts a story about jerk cyclists.
When I explain that every day I bike to work I save $5.18 (based on the cost of a bus pass) people often say “But it’s only $5.18”

$5.18 a day people. And I don’t have to buy a gym membership!

    1. Steve Miller September 11, 2015 at 7:52 AM

      Nicely done SlackerJo.

$5.18 a day is $6976 per year (based on 5 days a week 52 weeks a year). Saved over 30 years, that comes to $545,482, assuming you invest it in the stock market (based on 7.5% average returns).

Tell those haters to TAKE THAT!

ummm…I’m not a hater but unless I’m missing something, your numbers are way off. 5.18 a day time 365 days in a year = $1890.70. (Around $158 a month)

        Then according to Bankrate:

Your monthly deposit of $158.00 for 30 years with an interest rate of 7.50% compounded Monthly
with an initial starting balance of $1,890.00

You end up with $230,703.08. Still a tidy sum.

If interest is only compounded yearly, you get $219,243.20

        1. Adrian September 13, 2015 at 5:44 PM

Now your numbers are off since they presumably work 5 days a week. That isn’t every week of the year since you need to remove any holidays they take throughout the year as, well as public holidays.

Figure 240 workdays. $1,243.20. Still a healthy amount of money (a very indirect pun included at no expense.)

I am not a biker but I always find it funny when drivers complain about bikers. You’re sitting in a car in perfect environmental conditions and a biker might impact a few seconds of your drive. A few seconds where you’re sitting in a car in perfect environmental conditions!

Dee, along with cleaning up my finances, to my surprise, I had to clean up my relationships too. I could no longer talk or relate to some people that I seemed to be able to get along with previously. These days, I just don’t say much about money, finances, or anything else for that matter to people unless I know they are not going to get bent out of shape.

I’ve had comments on my blog along the lines of:

Me: We achieved 43% savings rate this month using a funky tax break on our retirements account
Commenter: Ah but if you take out the tax break then your savings rate is rubbish.

What is the point in saying that?! We got the tax break so that was our savings rate! Duh!

I will be a millionaire…sooner than later and I would consider myself an unapologetically frugal habit person who enjoys world travel. Haters always hate that other people make what they dream about and don’t DO happen. So, I avoid Haters now like the plague…because I can because I no have to work around people who aren’t as inspired and focused as I am. It’s a fantastic feeling.

I hear so many of these ideas so often. I have friends that complain about that their job sucks and I tell them to save. They tell me they have no money, but then go fly to Vegas, party it at the clubs, and come home.

When those same friends ask me to go I tell them I will pass. 1) I do not enjoy the party lifestyle of spending money to travel and get trashed, rather do it free at home 2) I am saving for my future life to retire in ten years. Next thing I know they are telling me I am missing out on life, I am being greedy, I am being selfish, I must have come from a super rich family, or I work too much.

All of those comments just get me fired up to work harder!

I agree and disagree…..Had a negative experience with a “friend” when they said something looked different about me. When I declared that I lost 11 pounds and maybe that was it….she replied…”well, you certainly had it to lose”….To which I replied ….”Thank you” & “Good Day”….and took her off my Xmas list…Hmmm I drop 11 pounds and she tips the scales @+250….AND I had it to lose….Pretty sure we’re in “hater/low self esteem territory”…
But I’m thinking the term “hater” is often over-used or misused when one has a differing opinion…So if I am not a fan of life insurance for children… And you purchase it for your kids… And I suggest it might have been better to open a “custodial account” in their name at Charles Schwab and deposit those premiums each month….I’m thinkin’ that doesn’t make me a hater….I guess a lot depends on “presentation”…

I tend to keep my financial goals and milestones to myself just for this reason. Everyone who isn’t saving/investing/planning finds loads of ways to judge others and justify their own situation. On the other hand, when I hear co-workers or friends complain about their money situation, I listen and force myself not to be judgmental. It’s tough to watch people financially self-destruct.

Now, if anyone asked me for advice, I would be honest. But really, it appears most just want validation that buying that BIG SCREEN TV on CREDIT was a great idea.

Ok, I’m loving this article. My hubby and I just sold a second home, that we could not sell when we built our current one ( don’t ask). I’ve been about to burst to tell somebody: we used the proceeds to pay off a home equity line, and that takes us from two mortgages, a credit line, and a car payment , down to one car payment and one mortgage! Hooty Hoo!!!!!

Appreciated this read today. I used to participate a great deal in FB finance groups and loved the discussion. I also felt that I helped many people along in their journey by sharing my story. But as the groups grow, these haters appear, so I stopped commenting/participating. We’ve reached what they called FatFI some time ago and I continue to work. The line I get most often is “You’ll never see a U-haul behind a hearse. You’re wasting your time saving so much money” Gee. Have they never heard of heirs and legacy? I’m building my legacy to give to others and my family/friends. I want others to benefit from . (But these people missed their chance to get any since they hated on me. lol)

HAH!!! You go with your bad non-u-hauling self ;)

I always find it hilarious when people are on $$ blogs/FB groups/etc in order to HELP BETTER THEIR FINANCES, and then when they hear ideas on how to do it they act as if they couldn’t care less about money…. I think some people just love being angry all the time :)

Yep, there’s always a comment from a broke person when you are doing well financially. Broke people always have a better idea on finances.

I was saying, very nonchalantly, to a friend something about paying off our mortgage early. She responded that I should never try to pay off my mortgage early because the interest in tax deductible. I was like, ummmmm, so I should keep sending thousands of extra dollars to my bank each year to avoid sending the federal government a few hundred bucks? Okay, let me put new batteries in my calculator a minute…

Sounds like an ex-girlfriend from college. Here’s a recent Facebook post

EX GF: The Kuerig machine makes such weak shitty coffee
ME: The Technivorm Moccamaster makes a bad ass tasting coffee. It uses the ideal water temp to extract the flavors.
EX GF: Machines are for the weak. I do well by hand.

Uh, so then why was she hating on the Keurig if she makes coffee by the hand?
Uh, what is making coffee by hand?
She likes hating on comments on posts where she’s hating on something.
And it so validates my decision to move on.

Yeah, some people like to just bitch and don’t want any input :) Unless you’re agreeing with them, of course…

    How about…
I decided to start eating more sensibly.
    – You better watch out you don’t develop anorexia!

I just taught myself how to cook (complicated dish)
    – You better watch out for (calories/cholesterol/diabetes/obesity/salmonella, etc.)

I get it all the time from my sister…Nobody else. Just her. Here is today’s jab-

“We’re looking at buying a condo but it needs work. We don’t mind though.”
“It probably has corrosion and mold. Not good.”

Last month, we were discussing working out. (I had purchased a stepper for her one year at her request and she sold it on ebay). I told her that I ride my stationary bike almost every night. Her response:

“I think that people don’t need to exercise. Just eating better is enough.”

The haters who insist that my love of my 2% cash-back credit card is misguided.

To date, i’ve withdrawn $35,000, and still have $20,300 in the 529 account funded by that card. A full year of college tuition paid and enough for next semester.

“But (some non-scientific survey) proves you spend 10% more by using the card!” Sure. Whatever. I retired at 50, despite my bad habits. When the kid is done with school, that card will fund college for the yet-unborn grandkids.
