We’re Having A Boy!!

I can’t believe it! 20 weeks come and gone, and now we’re just about 4 months out from a miracle happening :) I’m so excited!! Truth be told, I secretly wanted a little girl to take care of first, but the wife was quick to point out that it’ll only motivate me even more to continue having kids now ;) And she’s right! I’m gonna keep going till we have one, haha… and in the mean time, I’m gonna love the hell out of this boy and make sure he’s taken care of forever and ever and ever – I’m so freakin’ happy.

We’ve got an heir to the kingdom now! :)

And on the financial front, we’ve had a handful of bills to pay over the months, but still nothing too crazy just yet. We were waiting on the sex to really start planning and getting our acts together. Here’s what we’ve spent so far (in the past 5 months):

  • Doctor Visits: $400
  • Ultrasounds: $100
  • Blood tests: $150
  • Prenatal vitamins: $75
  • Pregnancy Tests: $25 (we did extras early on to be doubly sure, haha…)

For a grand total of about $750. Which, according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, is only .003% of what it’s gonna actually take to raise this young man up to the ripe age of 18. $226,920 will be spent by then – college not included. Crazy, huh?  Though so far our sick cat is beating him out with already banking over$4,000 in vet costs these past 6 months, jeesh… One of our family members will leave this world, and another will come into it.  The circle of life, baby ;)

Now next on the list is cleaning out our guest room (aka my old office) and making it nice and boy friendly.  It’s the only room that my wife is crazy excited to decorate – I’ve pretty much done the entire rest of the house myself.  Both to my wife’s liking, and also chagrin (she’s not a fan of gold-tasseled curtains or big gaudy picture frames – something my years of antiquing has instilled in me over the years).  So this room’s all hers, with my help in choosing options here and there. Whatever keep the peace!  I’ll have my pimp library to culture the boy in any time I want anyways, haha…

Other things on the list is figuring out how/when to start saving up for its college fund too (Oh, btw, we’re keeping his soon-t0-be-named name a secret until his birth day ;)). If you ever wanna scare yourself on how much money you’ll need for this, check out this college savings video from USAA.  I almost wet my pants.  By their accord, we’ll need to start saving $750 RIGHT NOW – and continue doing so every single month – if we want to send him to a private college in 18 years time (for a total of $350,001 – which includes inflation, and an 8% yearly return).  Or, “only” $350/mo if we send him to a public school instead, totaling $164,063. I’m hoping he’ll get that football scholarship by then anyways, but probably best to have a Plan B. just in case ;)

So lots to do until then!  I have no idea how that little booger‘s gonna change our lives, but I’m excited to get the party started. Anyone wanna start throwing out some really cool boy names? ;)

—————–
PS: I’ll try and not be one of “those” parents who blogs about their baby every other second, but you can def. expect some future posts on him.  Especially as he starts guzzling our money ;)
PPS: Think he’ll be embarrassed later that I showed off his wee-wee?

    Wow! J$ I’m so excited for you! My husband and I are trying to conceive and he desperately wants a boy, and I want a little mini-me lady, but of course I’d be thrilled with either at this point. Do you have any names picked out yet? We’ve already decided on our future baby’s name. I’m soooo happy for you guys. Congratulations on your little man!

    Congrats! Although I never want something coming down that chute again being pregnant is the most bizarre cool thing that happened to me. Have fun and don’t get all neurotic, please for your wife’s sake. Not that I know you all that well- it’s just a general piece of advice :?
    I thought I was having a boy. It was only based on the fact that every person that guessed it’s gender said it was a girl….I had a girl!

    First off – did they tell you that was his wee-wee? Or are we looking at the end of a foot? ;) Usually its not quite that obvious….

    Also, I disagree on the college thing – I think that it will go up some, however I think that people have got to the point of questioning exactly why college is so expensive. I mean, it WILL get to the point where people will wonder why they are paying $500,000 for a degree in teaching that pays $40k a year and costs 5 times as much as their house. I believe that within about 5 years college will start to at least start to get ‘competitively’ priced. Even people who dream of going to Harvard or Yale have to be smart enough to realize they are getting screwed.

    Congratulation on the baby boy!! When I was pregnant, everyone thought she would be a boy! (I wanted a girl though!) They are darn expensive. I’m still waiting on it to diminish and she is already 2 years old. As far as names go here are some that I like: Carter, Dylan, Jordan, Tyler. Our last name is short so I settled into shorter names when we were naming Reina. Good luck and I look forward to reading more posts about this new ‘venture’. LOL

    Having a child is an adventure of the best kind. You are stepping into uncharted territory, but figuring it out as you go, is half the fun.

    Good luck to you guys!

    Don’t panic too much about the cash, J. We were panicking when we got pregnant w/Vinny about budgeting, just how expensive kids are, blah blah blah, and we hardly noticed the change. Your priorities change. Instead of buying clothes for myself, I bought for the kid. The only thing we did feel the pinch on was formula. I couldn’t booby feed, and Vinny was allergic to cow’s milk, so soy formula here we go…and that stuff ain’t cheap!

    Congratulations J$! We have a 2 year old boy (and 5 month old girl). Don’t let the college thing freak you out. By then you’ll have no mortgage and be chairman of the board of the millionaire club, so you could always cash flow it, too. We put Christening money and 800 per month for my son until our daughter was born. Now we’re putting 500 per month each. It’s such an inexact science.

    Yay, congrats!!!

    Regarding saving for the college fund: One thing I remember my mom telling me after I graduated from college was that while she and my dad couldn’t save enough to cover my college tuition (which didn’t matter in the end, since I got a full scholarship – woohoo! – although there are still those pesky grad school loans…), she felt considerably less guilty after reading how it’s much more important for parents to cover their own retirements before worrying about their kids’ college tuition. Basically, the idea being that the best gift you can give your kids is your own financial independence in your old age.

    My biggest regret was not starting their education savings plan earlier. Even a little bit each month will develop the habit that is so necessary for longterm savings.

    Your child is going to be very lucky to have parents who are smart and self motivated, well planned and a heck of a lot of fun.

    Congrats!! Boys are awesome. :)

    As for the price of raising a kid and college, it’s not as scary as it all sounds. There’s a reason that the cost of raising kids goes up with income… it’s because we want to give them everything, but all they really need is us!

    We’ve hardly spent any money on our kid and he’s 6 now. We used cloth diapers — you should try it. It’s really easy and they are super cute. When we were done, we sold them. We bought a crib on craigslist and sold it for the same price we bought it for. Used kid stuff abounds! The library is great for kids too.

    Anyway, congrats again – you are going to be an awesome dad!

    Congrats. The grocery store pharmacy in our area waives co-pays on routine stuff like antibiotics and pre-natel vitamins, so we got those for free for both of our pregnancies. They do it, I’m sure, so that you stay in the store and shop, where they likely make their money back and then some.

    Congrats! The most surprising thing I learned when we had our first child was the amount of happiness a young child brings to everyone you come across – friends, family, even strangers. Everyone loves a baby, and has a smile to share with you. Sure, the lack of sleep, the worry over every sniffle, the change in the way you do even basic tasks all take some adjustment. But in the end, its an amazing time, enjoy!

    For obvious reasons, I’m particular to naming sons after fathers. You could have a JJ (J. Junior).

    My BIL and his girlfriend have been using cloth diapers on their kids. I don’t think I’ll be able to do that when we have kids. I just don’t think I could bring myself to wash a dirty diaper!

    When you do have a girl, you Penny is an actual name. Although those who know your real name may not get the joke!

    CONGRATS!

    I was secretly hoping for a Mrs. J. Money Jr., but a boy first is awesome. I like it when the boys are first, then the girls have a big brother to look up to when they are little, like me. :)

    If I were in your situation, which I am most definitely not, I would still be freaking out and probably start a college fund before I even started trying to have a child. All the costs for children scare the hell out of me!

    All this baby talk makes me rethink my no kids ever rule. I still don’t want one until after school, but makes me want to have a family. Maybe because I don’t have a family anymore, that’s why I want one. It’s just me, my husband, my pets and some relatives I never talk to.

    Huge congrats on the boy, J! My husband wanted a girl first and I wanted a boy. We got a boy first. I told him that every little girl needs a big brother. Less than 4 years later he got his girl. She’s such a handful that if she’d come first, we might not have had another! =)

    Kids really aren’t THAT expensive if you don’t buy into all of the gear that baby stores will tell you that you need. And used kids stuff is easy to come by because they grow out of it so quickly. So don’t invest too much on things that they will only use for 1 year – or that they might never use.

    Best of luck!

From experience, I can tell you that the latest gadgets aren’t always the best, and you can save a lot of money by only getting the things you really need. For safety, check up on recalls of baby equipment and buy a new car seat, there are several that grow with your child although they are more expensive up front.Consignment shops are a great way to get new or gently used items at a fraction of the cost of what you’ll find in stores. Best of luck and I look forward to reading more about the little man!

    @All Things Heatherly – I really wanted a girl myself, but a perfectly healthy boy is just as awesome! :) We have a few names we’re going back and forth on (with one REALLY good one we like), but nothing in stone yet. Hoping we’ll get closer as the months do :) Good luck to you two on conceiving, it’s a wonderful experience!
    @Molly (Mike and Molly’s House) – Haha, funny how that works out ;) The Mrs. def. feels weird too – it kicked her hard the other night and she jumped out of her seat!
    @Rachel211 – They def. made sure it was, believe me – I was asking the same questions ;) So unless it has a 3rd leg, I think it’s a safe bet, haha… hopefully you’re right about college too. I don’t think it’ll happen that soon, but I’m sure over the next 10-20 years things will start changing.
    @Monica – HAH! The wife JUST mentioned “Carter” yesterday! We like it too :) Reina is soooo beautiful, give her a kiss from me!
    @Jefferson – Haha, I believe you on that ;)
    @Einstein – It’s incredible! I was talking with someone the other day (an older person) who said they just found out the sex when it came out :) We’ve come a long way! (And esp. good for forecasting major diseases too – so you know what you’re dealing with once it arrives – scary stuff!)
    @Scott – HAH! I actually like that! :)
    @Nate St. Pierre – I hope he’ll be laughing when he’s old enough to understand ;) Maybe he’ll be running this blog then? (HAH!)
    @Trinnie – “I couldn’t booby feed” – haha… that’s hilarious. Not that you couldn’t do it, just the way it sounds ;) I’ll be calling you for pointers in no time friend!! Get ready!
    @Nick – I hope you’re right on that one! :) I like the $500 route – that’s a nice solid number for sure, I might have to copy you on that.
    @Stephanie – That’s the damn truth too, good reminder :) That’s awesome you got that full scholarship, congrats!! Smarty pants :)
    @jolie – Awww, thanks :) I agree that we have to start early too and get in the good habit. Just goes in as another line item on the budget, eh?
    @Mrs. Money Mustache – Thank you! You know what else I’m looking forward to now as the Spring comes up? YARD SALES!!!! There’s always kids stuff there! Haha… jackpot!
    @Tyler S. – As soon as he talks ;)
    @Jai – Oh jeez, that’s crazy!
    @Christopher – Haha… I’ve actually just heard about those recently ;)
    @Shane @ Beating Broke – Thanks man! Since I rarely spend anything on myself anyways, shouldn’t bee too horrible :) I actually miss shopping so it’ll now get me out of the house more to do it! Haha…
    @Money Beagle – Woah, that’s great! Customer loyalty for sure on that one :)
    @Kris @ Debt-Tips – Awww that’s a great way to look at it! No one’s said that to me yet :) But so true!
    @Edward Antrobus III – True that!
    @LB – Awwwww, well either way I’m sure it’ll be fine :) I will say that all the parts I was scared about have gone away for the most part (besides money stuff), and the idea of loving someone you CREATE is crazy exciting to me. I don’t know what it’ll be like until he’s actually here and smiling at me, but I bet it totally creates a real “family” :) You should go for it! Hehe…
    @Brian – Don’t jinx it! :)
    @Kathy – YAY!!!! I’ll try and get you to smile every Monday then ;)
    @Kaye – That’s true! Now we just gotta keep on making more babies till that girl comes out ;)
    @Briana @ 20 and Engaged – You’ll get your wish! Haha… better believe that little guy’s gonna rock it ;) And then take over this blog!
    @Monica C. – Thanks!! Yes, def. hitting up the thrift stores and yard sales this Spring/Summer – no need for brand new stuff over here! (except for maybe the stroller – I heard a nice good one is always needed)

    So happy for you both J. Money! Since people are chiming in with their money saving advice, thought I’d add a few things: 1. We borrowed the infant swing and an Exersaucer from friends who had a little one year older than ours, which I’m glad we did because the baby only actually uses those for a few months before they get too big for them. And then we gave them back after we were done and they didn’t take up space in our house! 2. We get our diapers from Amazon. (We joined the Amazon Mom program for a discount, and use the Subscribe and Save option.) They are cheaper than any deals I can find in the stores, even when using coupons and sales. And they arrive on your doorstep.

    When we were deciding on our son’s name, we tried to pick a name that drastically reduced the chances of any childish hurtful name rearranging ( shall we say??!!). Due to both of having some painful name calling experiences it was a bit strange way of picking a name. We finally came up with Derek ( choosing the spelling deliberately because Derrrick could be shortened to Rick and I’ll let you go from there). We are weird I know but it worked and we were all happy. Congrats and I a, sure your name choice will be perfect.

    Congratulations! I think my husband wanted a little girl initially too, but now that our son is here he is over the moon about it. If you are like him you will love having a little mini me to follow in your footsteps. The nurse said the best thing to me in the delivery room after our son was born, she said “once they arrive you can’t imagine them being anyone other than who they are.” We didn’t know the gender before our son was born, but she was absolutely right. When I looked down at that little bundle of joy I couldn’t imagine him being anyone else. My son just turned 4 months and he is the light of my life. I am so excited for you and your wife. You wrote about wanting children a long time ago, but then didn’t write about it again for awhile. I’m so happy to see you now have a little one on the way!

    Congrats dude!

    We just had our 20 week ultrasound yesterday and the sex is still a mystery (which is what we wanted). Excited times are ahead for both of us.

    You already have the jump on my, we haven’t started the college fund yet, but we are definitely doing a 529. The state of Indiana gives a nice 20% tax credit on donation up to $5000 a year. So I would definitely see what your state offers in terms of incentives.

    PS… he is going to hate you showing his prom date his little wienis!

    Awwwwwwwwwwwwww so happy for you guys! And don’t pay attentention to what the department of agriculture says it takes to raise a baby, it can be done for far cheaper if you choose to!

    At any rate enjoy cause they sure do grow up fast!

    Congrats on a boy! I really wanted a girl with my first, and got a boy and now realize all I would have been missing out on! Now, that I am pregnant again, I am still hopeful for a girl…what can I say, I want it all…one of each!

    I’m surprised you find out what you are having. You seem like you like being spontaneous, thought you’d go for the surprise. I was surprised with the first, and will be surprised with this one.

    As for names…I LOVE my son’s name, Braeden. I also like Gavin, Garrett, Greyson, Colton, Trenton…

    And, if your little boy ends up at all like mine, he will enjoy showing off his own wee-wee!

    Oh, and even though my baby isn’t due until July, I have already started his/her college fund. I opened a 529 in December. They were offering an extra $50 deposit, so I emailed and asked if I could open it up for the unborn, and they said absolutely. Just put myself as beneficiary, and once I have a name and social security number for the baby, I just transfer it over.
    My son has a 529 also. I am really happy with it. Ohio has a great 529 program.

    Congratulations! That’s so exciting – although kind of scary to see the money you need.

    Boys are never embarrassed that their “wee wee” was shown off. I have 3 boys… they are born with their own toy and love it.
    Our second son’s name is Tayne. He loves his unusual name and we often wonder how God knew to name him Tayne as he is our Enter-tayner already (age 7).
    I have friends who used the mother’s maiden name as their first born son’s first name – something fun to consider :)
    The name game is the best part of pregnancy!

    Congratulations to you and your wife. Boys are so much fun! I named my son Emory, after a very well respected hospital, here in Atlanta. His name means work ruler. I want him to be a hard worker. The name also is a constant reminder for me to continue working for my degree in the medical field. Whatever you decide to name your son, put some thought into it. I believe names can affect one’s characteristics as they grow older.

    This is wonderful! If I were you I’ll wait till the colour scheme of the nursery and buying outfits: mistakes are possible when people only look.

    THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! I hope each and every one of you are blessed this week too!! Whatever way that means to you! :)

    @Pretty Penny Saved – Wow, I did’t even know something like that existed? “Amazon Mom program” – I’m emailing it to the wifey, thanks!
    @andi – I LIKE THOSE!!! Both actually! “Cash” haha… how perfect would that be?
    @Marianne – Cool! We’ll take a look at your site to get some good ideas :) And congrats on your new baby too!!
    @Aaron – That’s a pretty good one :)
    @ChiMomWriter – Haha, you know I do what I can! :)
    @Ashley @ Money Talks – It would make it easier, huh? ;) I think we crossed out Jackson already, even though it was in my top 10 if I recall correctly…
    @Kandace – Yay for our babies! And SOMETHING saved is always better than nothing, so keep all that up. I think these large numbers end up scaring so many people that they end up just forgetting about it altogether.
    @Hermoine – Awww, that’s not weird – my wife does the exact same thing! Every name that we’re seriously considering she’s going through all the iterations to make sure nothing funky can come out of it. I told her he’s gonna be a pimp either way, but she said “just in case” haha…
    @Kris @ simple island living – You’re gonna have some GOOD protection when they get older! :)
    @Dr Dean – Oooooh, do I get your personal pager number too?
    @Cordelia – You know he will! And you know I’ll be posting a pic of it too ;)
    @Yana – Quentin! I like that! Though it’s always hard pronouncing (or not pronouncing) that “t” – say it a few times and you’ll know what I’m talkin’ about ;)
    @Crystal – Hahah… yes, if a “Luther” found me in a dark alley I’d DEF be scared! :)
    @WR – That def. makes it fun ;) I’m surprised there was no “tax benefits” in there though?
    @Bethany – Oh for sure. We’re def. hanging onto mostly unique names that you’ve probably heard before, but really rarely. We can’t wait!
    @One Frugal Girl – Awww thank you! And CONGRATS on your new baby too!! Yes, we had started trying 2 years ago on and off, and then when we tried “for real” it still didn’t happen and we started to get scared :( Then, out of nowhere, it just happened! We were incredibly shocked, but even more so happy :) So yay to being blessed!
    @Brian – Haha… can’t dads do whatever they want and you have to listen to them? ;) You better tell me the sex of yours once you find out (IF you find out before it’s born), it’s all so exciting!
    @Poor to Rich a Day at a Time – Thanks so much!
    @Nicole – Hahahahha….. I hope you get a little girl then next :) That’s what I’m gonna be hoping for too on the second round! Braeden is absolutely beautiful, way to go on that one :) Same w/ the others actually, they’re all so unique which is what we’re going for! And you’re def. right on me wanting it to be a surprise, haha… I did, but the wife wasn’t having any of it ;) So she wins!
    @Dani @ OK, Dani – YAY!!! We’re all having babies around the same time!! Let’s throw a party!
    @Young Professional Finances – Yeah, but what are you gonna do, eh?
    @Stacey – Haha… I believe it about their “own toys” ;)
    @Jonathan – You’re the second person to put down “Cash” here :) Just asked the wife if she liked it (cuz I do, esp cuz it reminds me of Johnny Cash) and she said no. “We’re not naming our son so it fits with your blog” is what she actually said, haha… But Benjamin? Def. on our top list ;) It’s the only non-unique name on it so far…
    @Katherine – You’re like my wife – she’s researching all kinds of backgrounds on names. I think it’s important too, but if one comes out that’s REALLY cool we both like, but means something strange, I wouldn’t be averse to it either.
    @maria@moneyprinciple – Possibly, but I REALLY hope it’s a penis or he literally does have 3 legs! :)
    @Kathryn C – Hehe… it’s true. I’m all kinds of emotional on the inside ;) Love you back, friend!

    Congrats on the boy! Bummer on the costs…our insurance is covering everything (aside from prenatal vitamins) — pretty amazing. I am delivering my 4th boy in 18 days. We are still working on names….

    I managed not to pay for the pregnancy test. I went to the emergency clinic (covered by insurance for a UTI) and when they tested me, I suggested they run a pregnancy test too…just in case. The nurse walked in and said “congratulations”.

    @Super Frugalette – Woahh! haha.. that is a handful of boys indeed, congrats :) Are you gonna keep on going until you get a girl like I am? You’re getting closer to a football team!
