How Much Is Car Insurance Per Month?

This costs money. How much do you pay for car insurance? Not $1600 right? That’s how much a friend of mine pays every 6 months – $1600!(ouch). I guess it doesn’t help having a couple DUI’s and a fancy a$$ sports car ;)

With extremes like that aside though, what do you think the average person pays for car insurance? Just how much does car insurance cost per month? I’m going to guess $1000/6 months, which works out to $166.67 per month. And now Google it and see what I can find… Well, I was *kinda* close!

According to CompuQuotes, the average car insurance costs $800/year. That’s only $66.67 per month!

Oh wait…so I was WAY off actually, cuz “per year” would make my guess @ $2,000…haha, oops. I also checked out another site (rmiia.com) that had the national average @ $816/year, so that # looks to be pretty accurate. In fact, this site breaks it down even better by showing it by state, and over a 3 year time-span so that’s pretty cool. It looks like the DC area, where I reside, is up at around $949/year. Some of this info is a cople years old, but you get the point.

You like how I base everything on 6 months instead of 1 year? It’s how USAA does it, so I guess I’m more in line with that thinking ;) In fact, USAA is the only car insurance company I’ve ever used! Crazy, huh? I’m just too in love with them to stray really, although I did try a cple times (shhh, don’t tell!) but even then Geico, Allstate, and State Farm were wayyy off.

The Mrs. and I Pay a total of $706.51 in car insurance every 6 mo’s for 2 cars

  1. ’93 Cadillac Deville, 6 Month Premium @ $330.30 with a $200 deductible.
  2. ’05 Toyota Corolla, 6 Month Premium @ $376.21 with a $200 deductible.

So for ME, USAA is the best. And according to their site, 4 out of 5 times their rates beat the competition! But it could be anyone’s guess as to which is the best for YOU. There are sooooo many variables that get thrown into the company’s calculations that make ya crazy – driving records, deductibles, coverage, the car you drive, the state you live in, the body parts you have – they all play a part in this silly game. I always recommend comparing quotes from at least 3 places for sure.

A co-worker also told me that some companies will knock off a few dollars if you pay the entire price up front too! Never came across that myself, but I know sometimes you can get a discount for having the amounts automatically deducted every month. I’m a big fan of breaking them into monthly payments than paying a huge chunk anyways.

So yeah, car insurance sure can differ out there. I’m hoping you all pay around the average yourselves, but if not let us know why! I could use some drama today ;) (And then check out USAA if you have any sort of military connection whatsoever – I genuinely love ’em.)

I purchased a Toyota Corolla 2013 recently and can’t drive it because I can’t afford full coverage insurance in Michigan. I cant find any car insurance for less than $600.00 a month. I have not driven a car in twenty years. The insurance company says it would be cheaper if I would have had continously had car insurance in the pass. They don’t care if you were not driving

I have heard that not having continual coverage hurts, but that’s pretty hardcore! I’d hope it would go down over time as you rebuild history?

Funny thing’s if you didnt own a vehicle -just what were you gona put auto insurance on?,a model car.Plus michigan hits ya with the catastrophic claims premium at $60-$85 or so every six months. 3 vehicles run me $1,600 every six month’s & I have no wreck’s-speeding-D.U.I.’s and been with the same company 10 + year’s. Wowwwww, that is insane. I’ve never heard of that! Your area must be high in accidents/crime or something?? That’s so weird. Though, $100/$300 IS very low for a deductible, but still. Something’s def. off there, I’m sorry to hear my man :(

It’s a shame all the other comments got wiped away when I changed blogging platforms cuz there were a lot of others to compare it too. Highs and lows, but def. don’t recall THAT high. Hope things change for you down the road!

I qualified for USAA insurance. Their quote was over $!000 per 6 months/ double that of four other insurance quotes. I have no driving accidents or citations. Driving over fifty years. I drive less that 2080 miles per year/retired. Something must be done about insurance rates (keep increasing) or maybe I should get a bicycle.

From what I hear the *area* you live plays a big factor too amongst insurers. For example, if some areas don’t have many USAA members it may be higher vs others that have tons of USAA members using them. So that could explain why their rates are so much higher than the other companies. Though I’m certainly not an expert :( Wish you luck with finding one that works for you!

I just bought a new 2012 Honda Civic, full coverage, $500 deductible, also kept my 1999 Ford Ranger 4×4, liability only plus underinsured motorist, etc… my policy is $549 every 6 months for both vehicles. Drive safely, budget wisely (good credit matters) and choose a car with excellent safety ratings. Oh, and it may be the only case where being a middle aged female is actually a good thing.

  10. J. Money June 29, 2012 at 6:54 PM

oh wow, that’s harsh – I’m sorry to hear :( have you tried getting other quotes yet? I’d at LEAST get 4 total from 4 different companies first to at least narrow it down, and then I’d see if you can maybe combine policies with your husband’s too if he has a car as well. The 2 things that are going against you are your newness to it all, as well as the leasing situation – most times leasing always jacks up your price. There are a ton of other variables too so it’s kinda hard to give guidance without knowing your total situation much, but I’d start on getting more quotes. There’s no way in hell I’d pay $800 a month for any car so maybe reconsider leasing and/or having two cars too for a bit until more time passes!

The only thing that are on my record are two driving with suspended license. The $120/mo didn’t bother me but when i got raised for no apparent reason seems unreasonable to me

Sometimes it’s something temporary or maybe something you can fix? Very smart of you to get all those other quotes though so at least you know you have the lowest!

I got my car when i was 17 a junior in high school. i’m 20 now and just had that wreck like really 3 weeks ago from today. and i never had any driving tickets or anything so i’m wondering if my insurance should have even been that high to begin with after driving so many years with out any problems and even taking and passing drivers ED and if my insurance really doesn’t help cover the cost of damages to my car. It got messed up bad i had to pay 1200 for a new car. Please help me J money? i live in GA btw u can email me at pancakes200@hotmail.com.

Unfortunately I’m not the right person to ask here – I don’t know the ins and outs of car insurance, just the basics :( If I were you I’d call up USAA and ask all your questions – they’re GREAT at explaining it all, and can tell you how to lower it or get back “in the good,” etc. That’s your best bet.

I paid about $175/6mo, then got a speeding ticket and my rate was upped to $225/6mo, so I shopped around and was offered $125/6mo by another company even with the ticket, so I switched. This is liability/UMBI/UMPD coverage only, but well above the legal minimums. I drive a 2004 Corolla. I am bewildered by how much some people pay for insurance but I guess the #1 factor is where you live.

Wow! For a ’93, you could probably get liability only coverage and put the rest of the money into a savings account. Then you’d save enough to replace the car in case of an accident within maybe a year or two.

It would be cheaper if I paid up on a 6 or 12 month plan. Before I moved to another state, I was still only paying $500 every 6 months. And I’ve had countless speeding tickets AND had my license suspended before.

To answer your question, I think it never hurts to spend a few minutes and call around a few places to see if they can offer you the same coverage you enjoy at a cheaper rate. I do it every few years and sometimes I’m surprised and others not (though I also have USAA and they are INCREDIBLE for car insurance – I’d call them first if either of you have been active in the military at any point, or your parents were.)

Maybe spending 15 minutes really CAN save you 15% on your car insurance? Haha… Good luck either way! Let us know how it turns out if you give it a shot :)

The coverage I have is 100/200 bodily injury, 100/200 uninsured/underinsured, unlimited medical expenses, 1 million in property protection, comprehensive coverage with 500 deductible, broadened collision with 500 deductible, accident forgiveness, rental reimbursement, and towing a labor. I’m 25, my wife is 24 and we have a 2010 car worth 20,000 and a 2013 van worth 40,000. I pay $1000/6 months. Great credit, age, and a clean record helps wonders.

I also very much love USAA. They’ve been my insurance since I was 16 (I’m now 36). I’ve been in a few fender benders and they’ve always been terrific. A few years ago, I was involved in an accident where a pedestrian was waved out into the road by the car in the other lane when the light was green for the cars and red for the pedestrian. I couldn’t see her (she was in front of the other car) and ran into her. It was horrible. She broke her pelvis and fractured her skull -“blood on pavement” driver’s ed video come to life. I was absolutely devastated at the time, but the police report put her and the other driver at fault b/c she was crossing against traffic singles. Despite that, I got multiple bills and letters from her insurance company – USAA handled it all. They took depositions from all the lead witnesses (including me), and assigned an insurance agent to handle the entire thing. While this as incredibly stressful, I just forward all communications to USAA and they took care of it and made sure that I was never in any kinda of financial or legal trouble. And my insurance is still just $295/6mo for full coverage with roadside assistance, 2007 Prius. Never went up. If you can get it, USAA is definitely the way to go.

Wow, low rates…from southern Ontario, Canada. Pretty High rates here. Little different in Canada… there is a requirement to have a minimum 1 million liability policy. For just that I pay 115/mnth on a 99 gmc sierra, age is 22

I pay $0 (yes, Zero) per year and have full coverage. In Florida, if you have $40,000. in personal assets, you can obtain a Certificate of Self Insurance from the State of Florida. If interested ,Google search to find the state website involved. I do not know about the other states.

What, really?? That’s a first… very interesting though. I’d still probably get insurance personally just so my $40k is still safe in a crazy accident, but I def. see the appeal of $0 monthly payments!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing :)

I was paying around 496.00 a year full coverage on a new financed Kia Sorento , no accidents ever. Then my new 17 year old teen got brand new car Subaru Forester financed. and it went to 1,900 a year for both new cars and new teen driver fully covered, all the other Insurance companies wanted 3000 a year. seriously who could afford that in this horrible Economy these days. My deductible is 500.00 dollars and we have WAWANESA, WAWANESA is only in Calif and Oregon. Great company!

I pay 225 a month with USAA. I have had 3 speeding. 1 was reckless driving cause it was over 20 over the speed limit. And I side shipped another vehicle when I was younger. I have an 06 GTO with 6.0L V8, an 85 camaro with a 400 hp 350, an 09 impala with a 5.3 V8. And my fiance is on my insurance she is 23 and I am 24. This is with all 3 vehicles full coverage with a 100 dollar deductible and towing and rental car included. USAA is amazing. I will get another insurance company!

Sometimes the risk of going without insurance is preferable – if your car is paid off. Put that amount of money in the bank for penalties/tickets instead.

Try out USAA if you can get in there, but if not never hurts to shop around and see what happens… Hell, you could probably even call Geico and straight up ask them if there’s something they can do to keep you while you’re looking around… you’d be surprised how often that works.

Cuz you’re super young :( Also, if you’re a guy (can’t tell from the name, though it is cool looking!). I think the age everything changes in your favor is 25 if I’m remembering correctly. And of course the longer you go without any at-fault accidents.

On the plus side, you’re only 17! Soak up every minute of it until you’re double the age like me at 35! I’d gladly pay more in insurance to go back in time :)

The system is really unfair. I asked my neighbor down the street how much he pays for car insurance. He said 87$ for two cars, one full coverage one liability. Hes with Allstate. That seemed pretty low so I thought Id get a qote from them. They quoted me 173/mo for 1 car. I asked him if he’s ever been in a fender bender. He said heck yeah, he’s been in 4 accidents and two of them were his fault. Now I am the best, safest drive I know, maybe the best driver I’ve ever met. I’m not just saying that, I really am. I have driven A LOT in my years (I’m 30) and I have never even so much as lightly bumped into another car. No accidents, no fender benders. Only one speeding ticket but that was over 10 years ago so does that even count? Him 4 accidents, me none, but I have to pay DOUBLE what he does? Every quote I get is ridiculously high. That is why I don’t have insurance and I will not get it until someone gives me a fair rate.

What type of car do you have vs his? How old/new is it? What’s the coverage you’re looking to get vs his? There’s lots of variables that go into it outside of # of accidents. I’d specifically ask the companies you’re calling for an explanation/breakdown so you can wrap your head around it, and even ask how to get it lowered too as most companies will tell you things you can do (though you may not want to depending on your situation). If all companies are quoting you high prices it means something is keeping them high like that but you have to ask them to figure out why.

I’m currently paying 80/mo for 6mo for the minimum amount of liability possible in Illinois. The company I’m using is Permanent General, who I figured to be the cheapest option but I’m starting to question that notion. I had to get my own insurance at the age of 20 and at that point I had collected a speeding ticket, three moving violations, small fender bender, and an unrelated DUI. Intial monthly payments at that time were 115/mo for 6mo through the same company. Now, five years later, I have yet to have any further traffic violations or accidents, and actually haven’t even been pulled over in that time. Do you think my rates should of gone down further than what they have with a clean driving record for five years?

I don’t know how much they should go down, but yeah – you’ve been on a roll lately – congrats! It def. helps vs adding to it :) I’ve never heard of Permanent General before, but I’d def. search around and compare at least 3 others just to give you a better idea. Cheapest is not always the best too, but if it’s a huge difference between the next option you gotta do what you gotta do. Also when you hit 25 as a dude that helps out a lot too.

Well, me and my husband are planning to buy a car and get insurance for our car. We are thinking about getting a minivan. My husband is 35 years old and married. We will be moving to CT soon to our new house. We need advice on what are the cheapest insurance companies out there. And wanted to know if anyone know how much would our insurance be if he is a new driver and 35 years old and married in CT? I would love an estimate but all those car insurance websites want to run my credit and I can’t do that just yet since it would effect my credit that I need to close on a house. If anyone can help, thanks! Will definitely shop around. So far I’m thinking going to.Geico, USAA and state Farm to get a quote. Also my husband will do a defensive driving course to bring down insurance by 10% anything else that could help us get cheaper insurance?

Oh man, all this is hard to say because every state is different and so much depends on your records and other factors out there. The best way really is to shop it around to get a better answer because even the estimates that are automated could be wildly different :( Can you wait until after you close? Or just check with one place first to get a better idea and then wait to do the others? If you guys are military I’d def. start with USAA first and then after that any of the bigger named places are a good 2nd place… Progressive, GEICO, etc. I will say that being 35 will def. help out though vs being 18 :) So he has that going for him!

I pay about 1300/6 mos and that’s for 2 cars. Comprehensive and liability on my loaded 04 Honda Civic Coupe (owned) and Full coverage and Gap insurance on ’14 Chevy Volt (financed) is that normal? I’m a 28 yr old single female had my license and have been insured continuously from age 16.

Seems a little high, but hard to tell as there’s soooo many variables that go into this like where you live, how much you drive, accident/ticket record, etc. Good that you’re searching around asking questions though :) The best way you can gauge would be to call up 2-3 more companies and get quotes so you can compare. That way you’d be comparing apples to apples and from there could tell where the better value is.

I recently got a quote for $4,358.00/ 6 months from Geico and I’m 23, and I’ve never owned a car before and I guess it will remain that way. I’ve also tried other companies, but the quotes just got higher. I’m a student with good grades and I have a 736 credit score, but the discounts don’t help much.

Ouch! I’m sorry to hear that… must def. be because it’s your first time trying to get insured :( I know you can have insurance *without* owning a car which might help with building up history, but you’d have to look into and see if it’s worth the $$$.. I did it a few times when I lived in cities where I didn’t need one so my history wouldn’t lapse and it was super cheap, but not sure if that’s because I had already had a car before or not. Could be an idea though?

USAA used to charge me $567 for six months for the car I have now. Now they want $1,000 for the same car. Nothing’s changed. Same address, same credit, still no accidents or tickets.

Geico wanted $129 for two cars including a 2019 Hyundai Elantra we got brand new today for two drivers. Geico for the win.
