A Great Way to Cash In Your Unused Gift Cards [+ $100 Giveaway!]

Happy Friday :) If you logged onto this site this morning wishing for a place to sell your unwanted gift cards and to be entered to win two $50 cards you’ll actually love, then your wish has come true! And you should go and play the lottery next!

I got a note from my new friends over at GiftCardRescue.com asking to pass on the word about them, and after checking out their site and asking “what’s in it for my readers?” I got the following:

  • How about a way to buy gift cards for 35% off?
  • Or even better – to earn up to 92% cash back selling your unwanted ones?
  • Lastly, how about a bribe? Let’s give your readers $100 worth of free gift cards!

They had me at bribe 92% cash back.

And if you’re wondering why their name sounds so familiar, well that’s because they were once featured on the best show on the planet: Shark Tank!!! So of course I had to partner up with them today… I mean, Kevin O’Leary can be watching, right? (*waves*)

In all seriousness though, their site sounds bad ass. I’m not a gift card connoisseur, but I do know I’m sitting on at least 3-4 unused cards myself to places I damn well know I’ll never use. Like Red Lobster (is that place even still in business?). And odds are you are too. The average American family is estimated to have at least $350 of unused cards laying around their house, and a recent study by the New York Post shows that over $44 billion in gift cards have gone to waste since 2008.

That’s a lot of money!

So if you want some extra cash in the pockets/bank account/investments (my recommendation), make it your mission this weekend to dust off those crappy cards and see how much you can make over at Gift Card Rescue. But if you have a gift card towards beer, you better send those to me first ;)

Now Who Wants $100 in Gift Cards?

Per bullet point #3 up above, G.C.R. (my new hip-hop name for them) has given me two $50 gift cards to give away to y’all today, one to Target and one to Walmart, and you’ll have two ways to enter:

  1. Visit GiftCardRescue.com and tell us what card you’d be most likely to purchase and/or sell
  2. Sign up to their newsletter to get the latest discounts and deals.

You’ll get one entry for commenting below on the card you like/want to sell, and one entry for signing up to their newsletter (make sure to let me know in the comments that you did that as well). We’ll run the giveaway until next Sunday, the 15th, at midnight, and then crown the 2 winners shortly there after. One will win the Target card, and the other will win the Walmart card (and if you prefer one over the other, I’m sure we can hook you up no problem regardless of the one you win).

Now go and enter, and then cash in all those cards you have laying around!

***GIVEAWAY OVER*** Congrats to our two winner: Tyneisha and Anne Marie!

    Hi J!

I would be most likely to buy a Morton’s Steakhouse Gift Card. You should write a post comparing GiftCardRescue to Raise.com which has similar business model.

Also, I signed up for the GiftCardRescue newsletter.

Thanks again for all the great articles on here and on RockStar Finance. I look forward to reading your updates on both sites.

It is out of stock — but 1800PetMeds is a definite gift card I want. I have just started lifetime meds on my dog which… hopefully… will be another 6-9 years. I have been extremely lucky and been able to use all the gift cards I have received. I love Red Lobster (yes they still exist) especially becuase I can order off the menu without any issue. Goot admit, not many places like that will do that without a lot of dirty looks at the least. Neat idea!

Amazon! I live really far away from Walmart and Target and only make it to those places maybe once a month. So I buy everything from quinoa to dog toothpaste (my dogs have high maintenance teeth!) to razor cartridges on Amazon.

I use this site all of the time. In the past when I had a credit card that gave me points, I would cash in the points for gift cards and turn them around and sell them for cash. It was the easiest way to get cash for the points. Now that i have switched credit cards to a pure cash back card, I don’t do this as much.

But what I do now is I buy gift cards. If I am looking at a large purchase, say a new TV and Best Buy has the best price, I buy up some gift cards at a 10% discount which essentially means I’m buying the TV for 10% off! Never had an issue buying or selling with them.

Hello! I’ve been reading for a couple months but have yet to comment – I love your approach to money and always enjoy reading your posts. Anyway, this site is kind of genius. I have a few gift cards laying around at home that I’ll probably never use so I’m bookmarking this site. In terms of what cards I’d buy, the AMC gift cards are a great deal. Going to the movies is one of those indulgences I enjoy every once in awhile so it’d be nice to save a bit! I’m also seriously contemplating selling a Coldstone Creamery giftcard that’s collecting dust at my house. I signed up for the newsletter too…thanks for this giveaway! Fingers crossed :) -Stephanie

REI would be my most likely card to get. Next would be Kroger or ARCO. Assuming that the site operators are looking through these, I’d have a suggestion to enable you to search for cards on every results page, too. It’d make it easier to shop for what you are looking for rather than starting over from the home page every time. Cool site though. Having email lists with a wish list to notify you of when cards are available is a great idea!

    Hi!

I would most likely buy my gift card at places I shop regularly:

    1. Dunkin Donuts. If I got 20% off 100$, that’s like 10 free coffees. I am in!
    2. Walmart/Sam’s Club. I don’t think this requires a justification lol
    3. Express. When I go shopping, I always use their coupons and rewards that I earn. Would love to save more!

I like to get gift cards as gifts because then I can use them how I please, but sometimes store-specific gift cards aren’t the best gift if you are trying to cut down on shopping by avoiding the stores, haha.

Also, I’ve been leery of the gift card swap sites for store cards because people can receive the cards under wrong pretenses. Not sure if this happens through these sites, but I have heard that people will purchase a clothing item, then steal the same item, come back with the receipt and return one of them for a gift card. Then they have a free clothing item and they have a gift card to sell online.

What do you guys think of this? Does it really happen or just some crazy story from the news?

I was a little disappointed with the minimum value the card needed to be to sell. I have several Starbucks cards that don’t meet that $20 limit. Guess that means I’m s.o.l well hopefully I win the target card.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I’d be more likely to sell off my big-box store cards in favor of more specialized stores. For instance, if you’d give me a Sears card, I’d have no idea what to buy and would probably have it for a year before either regifting or using it on something random. But if you give me a Bath and Body Works card, I’d be super-excited – Love my body lotions. Same would go for restaurants or candy shops – you get the idea.

Hey J, new to your site, but have been obsessively reading every article of yours and stalking the Internet using every possible search term (FI, early retirement, how i paid down x in x years, etc, etc) to find other finance freaks like yourself. Anyways, just want to say thanks for the info, it has totally turned my (finance) world upside down. I thought I was doing pretty good with $1,000 in my emergency fund until I started reading all of this. Now, I’m doing freakish things like diverting my down payment fund to demolishing my student loan. Reading your blog is giving me fresh energy to keep pressing on!

Anyways, this gift card rescue thing seems like a great idea. I signed up for their newsletter, and I would definitely buy a Whole Foods gift card. Anything to try and wrangle my food budget.
