I just overheard a friend say there’s some super deal at the movie theatres right now where you can watch unlimited movies for $100 a year. UNLIMITED! As in, you can literally walk in every single day and watch the latest greatest blockbuster hit right there on the big screen! I’m in love. And I’m also scared…
Do you know how much time you could possibly waste with something like this? Do you know how many times you’d be tempted to buy more $8 sodas or $35 popcorns? Yikes. On the other hand, you’d probably go through most of the movies in a 1 or 2 week span anyways. At least the good ones.
And then there’s the $100 price tag. Not something I’d have cared much about just a week ago, but I’m fairly certain that would NOT be a smart way to spend my money these days ;) Even if it is a bargain (like all those Groupons! yeah, they’re great a$$ deals, but you gotta make sure you’re not picking them up JUST because they’re deals – you’ll end up spending way more than you planned for). But you know what IS a good way to take advantage of all this? Ask for ’em for Christmas! Or my up and coming birthday! (Yeah December babies!)
Although come to think of it I’d actually need TWO movie packs. Who wants to go to the movies by themselves all the time? Man…. these guys sure are good. I need to get them to market Budgets Are Sexy ;)
Would any of you jump on this deal? Could you make good use of unlimited movies?? I want to know if I’m off my rocker… it’s only like $8/month. (that’s me trying to convince myself again…)

I wouldn’t sign up – I have better things to do with my time, let alone my money. My wife and I only go to the movies once, maybe twice per year. I don’t think we’ve been yet this year.
That being said, I realize I’m not your typically moviegoer. I know a lot of people that would jump on this in a heartbeat, and probably would pay $250/year or more.
Depends on how often you go to the movies… or how often you would go if you utilized a deal like this. I think I would buy it if it was offered in my area (IS it offered in my area?!)… I don’t see a lot of movies at the theater right now, but with something like this, I think I would get enough use out of it to make it worth the money.
Count me in and put me down for 3 or 4. With twin 11-year-olds we go to the movies a lot. If this includes 3D movies, one trip can cost you $50. Where do i go to see if we have them here in San Antonio?

I might be spoiled by Netflix and Hulu because I have become very adverse to spending money to see movies in the theater, Tron will probably be the exception this year. I think something like this would be a great gift for a high school student, I saw movies with my friends almost every weekend and even discount movie tickets add up in cost quickly. Personally, I’d rather fire up Netflix on the PS3 and curl up on the couch in my PJs than fight the traffic at the movie theater. Plus I have better food at home ;-)

I see free movies by checking the premiers on http://www.filmmetro.com or http://www.gofobo.com.
If you live in a major city, most likely there are premiers in your area. Because of the holidays, there aren’t many movies listed but you can see about 1-3 movie premiers a month.
This year, I saw Easy A, How Do You Know, The Fighter, and a few others that I can’t think of right now.
Point is.. there are cheaper ways to see movies in the theatre.
I actually got my father to jump on this Groupon! He and my mom had a similar deal a couple of years ago and they loved going to the movies together after a hard week at work. Even if they only went once a month they saved money!
I’d rather pay the same amount for Netflix or Hulu Plus per month and watch movies/tv shows in the comforts of my home, pop my own popcorn, and curl up on the couch in a blanket in my pj’s :P
I have an Unlimited cinema card which costs me £13.50 a month. I usually see at least one film a week but have been known to see two, or even THREE, in a day back to back. A normal ticket is £8 so I need to see two films a month for it to be worth it and already this year I’ve saved over £100.
I love my cinema card because I can go to the cinema whenever I like and see everything. Some films I’d probably skip out if I had to pay £8 each time but by essentially going for free, I’ve seen loads of great movies this year I’d have otherwise missed out on.
If you’re a film fan, it’s so worth it!
I wouldn’t because I can count how many times I went to the movies this year, and I can guarantee it didn’t reach up to $100. It’d be good for a movie critic or blogger. But little ol’ me, probably wouldn’t be a great investment.
That would be a great deal for people who like going to movies. It wouldn’t be of use to us, as we haven’t spent a hundred dollars for movies even over 20 years. It is rare for a movie to be worth seeing at all, and even then, it might be free online. Sicko is the last movie I saw, free online. I loved the movie, but when my daughter invited me to see it again at a theater, I declined. She didn’t know I’d already seen it. I don’t like seeing the same thing twice, and I find it a burden to sit that long watching a movie or TV. In the last 15 years, the only movies we’ve gone to see were Dante’s Peak (liked it) and Constantine (didn’t much like it). The only reason we went both times is that we won free tickets in a contest.
I’m tempted just ’cause of the deal…keeping in mind, this comment is coming from the girl that maybe goes to the movies 2-3 times a year. I’d probably go more, if I was committed to go, but how much would I spend on snackies? UGH! The dilemma!!!
$100 for a year? Sounds like the Netflix deal we have here in Canada, where its like $9/month… the catch? their movie library sucks (the USA’s is much better).
I wouldn’t jump on it, because I simply wouldn’t use it — for me to rent the 10-15 movies/year I actually watch off iTunes, I’d save money.
I go to the movies regularly but did not spend $100 this year doing it. We are lucky and have ‘Dollar Day’ every Wed. in our town. They movies that have been in the theaters for a few months but it’s still cheaper than renting and I get to experience the big screen!
Um, YES! Tickets here are $15 each, or $10 on tuesdays.

We just got Sky Movies on our tv package though, so we’d cancel that if such a deal ever came here (not that it does!) There’s almost always a movie on now, just not brand new ones that are still in theatres.
A swell deal if you would go at least once a month and could resist the lure of the concessions stand.
In the meantime, the theater gets the $100 per person — and if something keeps you from utilizing the deal more than once a month, the theater still breaks even. Most of its revenue comes from food, of course, so part of the psychology could be, “This ticket is sunk cost! I can afford popcorn!”

I’d definitely do it if they ever offered something similar in Europe! :) But that’s only because I watch tons of movies to begin with! :). But I think Donna Freedman is right. I think I would end up thinking (rationalizing) that the ticket is a sunk cost, and that I would therefore splurge on popcorn, coke and the sorts. And you made a good point with the fact that you would have to buy 2x of these deals to get the best out of them. Maybe you should include these costs (popcorn, coke, 2x deals, etc.) to the $100 -and then divide the total amount with 12. Then you would get THE REAL amount pr. month (not the original $8) and then you can decide from there if it’s a good bargain or not. Just a suggestion. :)
Please share the link. I don’t go often, but I have a friend that goes to every single premiere (it’s his thing) and I think that he would kiss the ground that I walked on for something like this. Plus there are a couple of movies that I want to go see next year. It’s $12 a pop where I am so it doesn’t take much to recoup the $100. That and the fact that I NEVER visit the concession.
This is just my normally warped take on things, but I think it would only be worth it if you are unemployed. That way, you could spend all day in the theater, sucking up their warm (or cold) air, using their toilet paper, and hey, even getting some entertainment out of the deal. What a way to save money!

Not me, we haven’t gone to the movies much over the last few years. If I get it, it would be $200 since Mrs. RB40 would want to go too.
Know what’s sad? To me, there aren’t 12 movies a year worth seeing in theatre. I have a Netflix account, but my standards for what I watch while running on treadmill is far lower than what it takes to go to the movie theatre.
My wife and daughter don’t care for animated movies and while I’d see every one, there’s a creepiness factor of an adult going alone to a kid’s movie. I don’t want to be that creepy guy.
It was a Groupon ad :) For a local mall I believe… which actually brings up another variable — What if the Mall cinemas aren’t as nice as the others? (Like Regal, AMC, etc etc). Would that matter? I think it would for me. I’m all about the atmosphere of places I spend hours at. Same thing goes for houses & places I rent — It could be the bargain of the century, but if I’m not excited to be in that particular area it doesn’t matter — I’ll hate it.
PS: I don’t use Netflix or Hulu — just Comcast OnDemand… there’s always something there worth watching, and I hate knowing in advance what I’ll be getting. I like picking on the fly ;) Woo!
PPS: This also reminds me that I used to bring in $1 cheeseburgers from McDondald’s into the theatres as snacks! haha… for you ladies who have big purses, you can bring in lots of cheap candy & sodas – that would save on snacks. When you remember to bring ;)

Oh, J$, your question about whether the movie theater would be as nice in a local mall… reminds me of when we first moved out here. The nearest movie theater was a mom and pop operation and it sucked! It was old and rickety and the customer service was horrible. One time the guys came in and turned the lights on when the movie had two minutes left to go and just started cleaning. I complained while there, and wrote a letter of complaint to the management, and never heard a word back. Thankfully they finally closed down. That would be horrible to buy a $100 ticket for a year and find it was a place like that one. I have a friend who LOVES movies. She is legally blind and is on disability but she is still allowed to make a certain amount of money each month and she got a job taking tickets at one of the big theaters about six years ago and she totally loves her job. Of course she gets to go to all the movies she wants, free, and she can take her family (daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren, sister, nephews, etc) along with her, and one friend at a time. Anyway, she and I go to the movies about once a year, I treat for dinner and she gets us in to see the movie. We have never bought from the concession even though she gets the food discounted.
hmm.. I considered it until I remembered that I watch most movies in my backyard theater. Perhaps if it was a drive in I’d give it a shot.
haha LOVE that partnership you’ve worked out :) and also that your friend not only enjoys the job, but she’s workin’ all the benefits out of it! both my brother and my sister used to work at the movies and to this day we still get free passes whenever we go back home to visit. we should probably stop that now that it’s been a good 10 years since either of them have worked there, but the same managers are there and one of us will buy some expensive food so they can make some extra money ;) it’s a great trade off – esp when there’s like 6 of us that go at the same time! but yeah, usually best to not buy all those crazy snacks there.
