Would You Pay For Extra Sleep?

Sleep vs. MoneyI’ve been getting jack for sleep this week, and I’m starting to realize how valuable it is. I can’t think straight and all my days are mushing together like some sort of cracked-out dream (and not in a good way). Coffee doesn’t even work on me any more :)

The one and only thing I need right now is SLEEP. It’s just not for sale, and that makes me sad. Sure I could manage my time better and stop doing the things that are sucking away my attention, but sometimes it just doesn’t work. At least not for me – I enjoy life! I’d stay up all night if I could.

Unfortunately our bodies need rest though, and we need to give it to them. But what if we could BUY sleep? Like, at some hourly rate? (There’s an App for that!) Would you grab some? I would. Not a lot – say, 2 or 3 hours? – but it would be nice to have as an option. Of course, that would also depends on how MUCH these hours would go for.

I think I’d pay $20 or $30 for an extra hour, how about you?
Maybe even $50 for 100% PURE REM-type sleep ;) The varieties could be endless in this Dream World. In fact, I bet the higher the amount, the more likely I’d be forced to get my act together! Haha… Dropping $50 every now and then is one thing, but every other day? Shoooooot….no way mang. I’d just have to buck up.

I would be all over that! I cannot function if I don't sleep 7-8 hours… I would pay whatever the going rate was! But…if you could buy efficient sleep, like the REM kind that really rejuvanates you, I would pay top dollar for that and only buy a couple hours. :)

You would start to think that you have some extra hours that you can agin spend working or doing any other stuff and all your extra hour purchase would agin go for everything else except sleep.

For the past couple of years, my answer to the "if you were a super hero, what would your super power be?" question has been that I wouldn't have to sleep. Mind you, I doubt if I would be any more productive if I didn't have to sleep but I like to think that I might eventually do something useful with my time once the novelty wore off. If nothing else, I'd get a lot of baking done (my favorite insomnia activity in college). I would gladly pay to have the benefits of sleep without having to sleep because think of what you could do with an extra 56 hours a week.

I guess there's a reason why the "sleep" industry is so lucrative… but I agree, a good night's sleep does wonders for my productivity.

Woohoo… take a pill to give you sleep and then be able to party all night long!

It would be great to be able to get that true feeling of rest (caffeine and other stuff never is the same as sleep) and be able to know what is going on better would be great! Not sure how much I would pay for it knowing that I have the time to just sleep a bit more, but there is another show I want to watch!

Eh. I don't think I could justify paying money for sleep. I've found that when I do things right (exercise, eat healthy) my sleep actually is much more restful.

Other things I've noticed tend to help in the sleep department:

    1) Not answering drunk dials
    2) Making sure the dog is just as tired as I am before bed
    3) A clean bedroom and soft sheets
    4) Alcohol :)
    5) Not procrastinating so my evenings are mine and mine alone

So no spending money on sleep for me. I'll just keep attempting to do things right and hopefully sleep will just happen.

haha…alcohol keeps me UP! my brain races and i get full of all these crazy ideas :)

**Oh, and these paid hours would be legit too. When you go to bed the Sleep Fairy would auto. add the # of hours you paid for to the end of your sleep. That way you'd INDEED get these extra hours and not procrastinate more :)

You've totally thought this out. I feel you on the lack of shleep these days. What is going on? Anywho, I don't think I could pay for sleep…not when it's free. Kind of like how there is milk in my office, but if it runs out, I refuse to go buy a "supplementary" carton of milk because there will be more tomorrow!

I guess I do pay to sleep through the lovely pharma world. As a raving insomniac since 2000, I am royalty in the lands of no sleep. (And, J. Money, you are correct – research has shown alcohol to disrupt your sleep pattern.)

Rather than disturb you with tales of what it takes to make me sleep (probably the same things that tranquilize elephants at zoos), I will simply ask your question, hell yes, I'd pay for it.

I like to think that there would be frequent buyer packages on the $50 deal. Oh, you like our product soooooo much that you want to use it every single day? Well fine, have we got a deal for you. I am quite certain it would make me more productive, happier and probably nicer (although me without snark is like a world without rainbows). It would be the best investment ever.

Oooh . . . I think what I would love to have is a daily nap at work. Right after lunch. About an hour should be good. Shut the office door, and snooze. ANd then wake up refreshed and ready to take on the afternoon.

I rarely get a lunch break even, usually having to eat at my desk as I work . . . but in a dream world, I would love to have an official work approved and reccommended NAP! ;-)

You can pay for sleep. By not worrying about whatever work you are working on you'll get that extra sleep, no? If the project you are working on is going to get you $20…don't do it and go to bed.

Am I simplifying too much? I have a tendency to do that.

Hire people to do all those miscellaneous things that are keeping you awake! Then you can sleep more!

Good call! Daily 1 hour nap @ lunch? YES PLEASE! I'll bring my own and then use the money I save to go towards it very day :)

@Din – it's not the miscellaneous things I have problems with, it's all the creativity/writing/designing I do that keeps me awake (and excited). Plus, I like being in control of everything so I know it gets done right ;) And by me. Good idea though…I hear lots of entrepreneurs are going that route.

This week, oh yeah, I'd pay for it. I wouldn't on a regular basis, but when life gets crazy if I could just pay some cash and use that time to finish up my projects, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Here's a great new article from the NY Times about sleep and insomnia http://nyti.ms/cLesp3 . I don't know if I would pay for sleep though…that would probably bring more sleepless nights about how I'm going to pay for it!

I got use to sleeping 4 hours a night.
    Got to love the military!
I would say I wouldn't spend that much on an extra hour or so.
    maybe $10 per hour.

I've had some success reducing my sleep needs using a weird supplement powder called "the Missing Link." In college, my dorm would gather 'round during finals week and solemnly down it, mixed with Mountain Dew. So nasty! But effective.

Also, as a sleep substitute, there's binaural stimulators, which you can just download to any device with earphones. You can download them from Amazon.com, or there are some really nifty free ones avaialble at themeditationpodcast.com. (Can't hurt to try!)

That powder scares me, but that stimulator thing might be worth a shot? Although usually when I actually MAKE it to bed I'm fine – I pass out in a heartbeat. It's the getting there I have trouble with ;)

I would certainly love more hours in the day! I definitely don't get as much sleep as I should but if I could buy extra hours I wouldn't use them all on sleep.

I'd pay $100 for each day I could tack on an extra 4 hours after midnight. Let me know when you figure out how to do that :)

I would without a doubt in my mind pay for sleep. I work 9-10 hour days with and hour and half of rush hour traffic every day. Needless to say, I'm strapped for free time and thus sacrifice sleep.
