Would You Rather… Millions vs. Teleporting

Would you rather...Hahaha… oh man, it’s been WAY too long since our last Would You Rather… remember the “1 year of your life vs. $100,000” one?  I miss these crazy things :)  And also, I’m way too tired to write an actual post today, haha…my brain is so fried right now. In fact, I had to use Google to help me come up with a good one!

And let me tell you, there are some really *shady* ones out there, wow.  I guess it’s true that anything can relate to porn.  But since we’re a family-friendly website here, we’ll stick to good ol’ fashion money talk. I think you travelers will like this one:

“Would you rather… have $5 MILLION dollars -OR- the ability to teleport?”

Ooooooh hard one, right? The Attractive Traveler conjured this one up early last year only she had “unlimited” money there – probably because her reader base is mostly adventurers.  I’m pretty sure if I said you’d get unlimited money 3/4 of you would take it without a question ;)  You wouldn’t be able to teleport, but you can get pretty damn close when you’re rich, bitch!

With *only* $5 Million dollars though, I have to think that the teleporting is looking awfully exciting. Imagine being able to snap your fingers and be ANYWHERE at ANYTIME?  You can literally go across the world in a day if you’d like.  Or just chill on the beach one day when the 2 feet of snow back home is pissing you off.  Or $hit, you can just head to France one night when you’re aching for some french cuisine!  (or wine! or both!). Endless opportunities…

Of course, $5 Mil can def. set you up for life if you choose.  You won’t be able to switch across the lane as fast before you get hit by a car (BAM!  Didn’t see that perk coming, did you?), but if you’re cautious enough you’d have plenty of dough to enjoy the “good life” ;)  Pros and cons, baby, pros and cons! And guess what? You have to choose one.

Yup, if you don’t leave your answer in the comments below you’ll never get a chance for them to come true. The magical genie only pays attention to the good boys and girls.  So what’ll it be? Lots of mulah or lots of WOW? I choose teleporting.  If only to never sit in rush hour again.

PS: Here’s the list of all previous Would You Rathers…

Can you take someone with you when you teleport? Then 100% teleport! If not, then 100% teleport!

The money you will save on travel and the time you will gain with family, friends, sleeping-in is all priceless!

    I’m still going!

Think about it. Teleporting would allow you to live anywhere in the world and still have no commute to work.

Heck, if you could teleport, you could run the fastest courier service in the world and charge 1000x the price of UPS overnight (as long as you can carry things with you). If you could teleport with other people. You could work with Special Ops, teleport the President himself, CEOs would pay hundreds of thousands to have you bring them places in an instant.

The earning potential for teleporting goes well beyond $5M, $10M or even $100M. If you were to put a price on teleporting, it would be in the billions.

I’m thinking teleporting, too. Since we know money is not insurance for happiness, I think experiencing things leads to the most personal satisfaction. If you could go to places and times that you’ve only read about, how amazing would that be??

Teleport please! Think of the time you’d save in your everyday travels. It would save me two hours just on my commute! If I could get Patrick Stewart to come along on my rides that would be even better. I know he’s old and bald, but come on that voice is killer :-)

Dude, teleporting would save sooooooo much money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No gas expenses. No traveling expenses. Who needs a hotel when you can teleport yourself home each night to your own bed? And then back to the bahamas and the beach in the morning???

No waiting for cars to warm up. No blizzard issues. (yes…I’m in Kansas right now). No being late for work because of traffic. No wasted lunch break time traveling back and forth.

All in all..teleporting is kick A$$

I was originally going to go with Millions since there is really no where I need to be that bad, but the idea of using teleporting to make more than 5M is actually pretty intriguing. But then I remembered the movie Jumper and honestly, I don’t want to lead that type of life. Furthermore, you’re gonna end up as someone’s/the government’s science experiment before you can get your business off the ground.

So I’ll take the 5M. Check or cash.

After everyone’s comments and ideas regarding teleporting, I was tempted, but will stick with my original choice: take the money.

Teleporting by myself doesn’t sound all that fun (unless I went to visit family or friends who don’t live nearby), and I think a teleporter would be viewed as somewhat of a freak. No thanks.

I’ll take the money and invest in my family!

Would it be just me that can teleport? If we all were touching, would they teleport too? Would any object teleport with me? If the whole family could do it, then that would be my choice. If just me, then I would take the money. Yes, I could beat the rush hour and get back and forth very easily, but it would be just me. The wife would have to navigate the old fashion way. Too many questions.

If teleporting became a reality there would still be forms to fill out for Visas and taxes to go along with it. It wouldn’t be free.

Jeez I am a huge downer lately. OK, taking away current life issues, I would have to say teleporting, because it just sounds kick-ass.

I’ll have to think about this more, but teleporting gets rid of the need for a passport! Haha. I also don’t like the either/or of it. If I take the $5M, will I lose my current or potential ability to teleport? If I take teleporting ability, am I prevented from acquiring as many bucks as I desire? As others have asked, I need more details on that ability such as what or whom I can take to or from destinations. Like if I teleport myself to a place with a big pile of cash, can I bring it back? ;)

Right now, I’m on the side of the $5M…

  22. Burnette February 4, 2011 at 12:25 PM

Teleport all the way! Totally will balance out the $5 mil. Like Tom mentioned above, can we teleport other people? I would totally be travelling to some exotic place every weekend, knowing that I can come back home in a flash if I don’t like it and be able to sleep in my warm bed at nite.

However, if you’re a real genie, there’s no weird limitation or exclusion, is there? LOL!

Skirting the morality lines and without breaking any laws I think – think of all the arbitrage you could pull off in financial markets from being able to be in any market at any time :) I mean you would save on a ton of costs as well with the transportation etc but if I’m not taking the 5 million I need to make up for that right and as legally as possible. I mean I have high hopes for http://www.financiallydigital.com but I mean come-on, I can now teleport :)

I will choose the money. Because if you can only teleport alone, that means you are alone all the time….that would be fun sometimes but other times I would want to go somewhere like Australia and my husband or friends couldn’t be with me! That would kind of suck. Plus, with $5m I could travel to all the places I wanted, plus have money for retirement, kids’ college savings, new car/house/etc. That would keep me satisfied and happy. :)

Is it really bad that I’d pick teleporting, because even if you run out of money, you can teleport into a bank vault, take some, and hit the high road? (I’d NEVER DO THAT, I’m just sayin’). I’ve often wished for transporters (Star Trek FTW), so I wouldn’t have a 30 mile roundtrip commute. And it wouldn’t take me 16 hours to fly to Australia or China. Yeah, teleportation FTW!

    1) You cannot do anything illegal while teleporting, or you lose your superpower ;)

ignoring the aforementioned ‘soul’ issue I brought in comment 25, If I chose to teleport I would do the following:

    1. Teleport to New Zealand for the first few days
    2. Follow the sun on the equator. I would teleport every few hours to an island/land.

After all of the initial fun was worn off I would:

    1. Teleport to a bunch of Costco stores and survive off of the free samples.
    2. Teleport from the bedroom to the kitchen, make coffee, teleport back into bed.
    3. Practice throwing a football to myself, teleportation style!

It’s a good thing I don’t really have the choice ;) Money isn’t real; abilities are. Especially now, abilities are more important than money and are becoming more so. I wouldn’t like the limitation of being unable to take people with me, but it would be a great skill to have. To really think this through and decide it makes the amount of money irrelevant. One of these things is more valuable. $5 million is not all that much, but from what we are all used to and the fact that we deal with money every day and give our souls for it, I think we tend to overestimate its value over what we do not have. Money isn’t love. Money isn’t power; it is a power substitute. Money sure isn’t health or ability. Good thought-provoking question!

Seriously??? How can people even consider choosing money over this? No one, EVER, has gotten this gift. You would be the very first human being in the history of humanity to have this gift. Just by fame, alone, if you so wished, you would make TONS of money. If you go the military route, you can be the absolute ultimate spy. Nothing escapes you. If you get caught, you port out. In sports, you are the ultimate player. You can go to the Moon. To Mars. You can fly by repeatedly teleporting in the sky. You don’t need a job anymore. Your entire way and philosophy on life changes. Hungry? Hunting becomes a joke. You can save countless lives if you decide to go the philanthropic route. There are tons of examples that makes this the ultimate gift you can ever hope for, and I’m not even going into the “immoral” route. Also, clearly the conditions are biased. Would the 5 million $ be used for good or evil? It’s all pretty relative, to be honest. Is it bad to teleport and steal from a criminal?

For 1 billion dollars, I would still choose teleporting. It doesn’t prevent you from doing whatever you are doing today, but it only allows you to become the single most interesting human in the history of our kind, and accomplish things you never dreamed of before. Society as you know it today loses its meaning to you.

I like it!! Very well put, my friend. You could do TONS of awesomeness w/ teleporting. Only part I see which could backfire is if all this teleporting does something to your body over time. Like gives you cancer/etc. Since you’d be the first person doing it, no one would know the answer… If that was a possibility, would you still take it? ;) Get all the fame, money, etc, but have the chance of dying faster cuz of it all? Tricky one!

If you could teleport others and large items like the movie jumper then i’d choose teleporting.

You could approach a benefactor like a tech billionaire and help teleport people and equipment up to the moon. Mining the lunar surface with you porting containers to earth could net you billions, thats not even counting space exploration from the moons lower gravity and what you could make moving equipment and supplies.

Even if you didnt want to risk that could take goods from a to z avoiding customs and taxes.

Better question would be $50 million or teleportation.

Would still take the power as long as it was Jumper rules. You can take a person, you can teleport where you have been or can see (or have seen) and you can move very large things as long as they are moving themselves (truck, bus). Also the fact you seem to pass through a tear in space rather than be destroyed and recreated is a bonus.

The only way to make serious money without turning to crime would be to join up with a billionaire futurist who didn’t get where they are by screwing over everyone else, so probably one of the Google founders. Even if all they did was run tests on you to try to recreate the power it would be lucrative. I’d still worry about the golden goose scenario where they think dissecting my brain would be worthwhile but at least you would know you can escape easily.

I think about this way to much. :D

Maybe not teleportation but there is some fun stuff coming out in the next few years.

Fusion could be viable within a decade meaning cheap clean near unlimited power, 3D printers, 3D bio printers for food and organ replacement, gene therapies curing disease, nano technologies, self driving cars and big leaps in computing. All of this is either in prototype stage now or is being worked on.

So give it a few decades and you’ll have an immortal android body but still no teleportation.
